How do I know if my cat is blocked?  My Fiance, Matt says to let the antibiotics work.

Oh no, it sounds like he blocked again. :( We had 3 of our boys block over a rather short period of time many years ago. It's very treatable, but life-threatening if not managed. :(

One of them blocked again when we took him home. We had to take him back, where he was then catheterized, and they administered fluids frequently to flush everything out, and he was kept at the hospital 24 hours until they were sure his bladder was completely flushed.

It can be dangerous for a cat to go without eating for 48 hours, so assuming he needs to go back to the vet for another flush, you may want to ask about an appetite stimulant, or syringe feeding (in addition to the pain meds). :heart2:

If he hasn't peed in 24 hours. This isn't an issue of antibiotics and infection. This is an issue of physical debris literally preventing pee from leaving the body. Antibiotics help if there is an infection causing irritation, but if no pee is coming out, then the issue isn't irritation, it is the crystals in his urine and mucous from the irritation causing a physical block that antibiotics cannot resolve.

The best advice is to call the vet and describe what's happened, his behavior, his elimination or lack thereof, and let them advise you. They don't charge you for the phone call.

Ooops, forgot to mention, if he is blocked and can't pee, it backs up in his system, and can kill him within 24-48 hours. Given he was administered fluids at the vet, if he hasn't peed since coming home, it's already been almost 24 hours. :(

I'm still so sad (on the verge of crying) because I still don't see any improvement. Sammy still isn't eating. He isn't laying on the blanket that I left for him, and he hangs his head over his water bowl without drinking. He trys to go to the bathroom but still isn't going. My Fiance is giving him his pain meds and antibiotic timely, but I don't see any improvement. Sammy just lays next to the water and looks out of it :( Should I just keep waiting for him to get better or is there something I should do? We didn't get any blood tests for Sammy, just the urinalysis.
This does not sound good and he is still not out of the woods and needs to get back to the vet immediately. He may even need a catheter and fluids at this point and have to stay at the hospital for a day or so. I am so sorry for your kitty as he is in great, great pain. This is definitely a life threatening condition and he is suffering. The antibiotics will not unblock him, nor will any diet . He needs that catheter, IMO, to allow the crystals to pass through. I would also do the blood work when he goes back. Poor baby........... mega, mega, mega vibes :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: to your kitty and a hug for you as you do what you can for your boy :hugs: :hugs: Not easy to see them suffering so. :vibes::vibes:

Thanks again. After an hour and a half of calling around and figuring stuff out I was able to find someone to take Sammy in to my regular vet.  He's there right now WAITING to be seen.. they are fitting us in.  I don't undeerstand why they won't see him sooner if he's so emergent.  I hpe we got him there in time.  I'm stuck at work.. I hope his organs haven't suffered.  I gave them permission to do blood work right away.  I'm just WAITING to hear.  His heart was beating way too high the other night too..

Whew!  We got him there in time.  The vet said that he was covered in urine.. which is a good sign because he was able to release some.  She said his bladder was still quite full so she gave him medicine to make his urethra not swollen.  She's sending him home and wants him on the medicine for the next several days to make sure he stays unswollen and wants to check him again tomorrow.  Matt is taking him for a recheck at 9am :)

I had no idea that canned food is better for my kitties.. I'm switching them ASAP.

AWWWW poor baby and I do hope that soon, very soon, he will be all better and that the anti-inflammatory does it's job. I think we all were in the dark at some point about dry food solely for our kitties. I do hope that he will eat the canned Hill's C/D too. Eventually, once he is stable and things look good, then you may be able to start adding in some other grain-free canned varieties with the C/D. I hope he takes to the wet food.

The following link will be enlightening for you to read. http://www.catinfo.org/

Mega, mega vibes for the check-up appointment this morning. :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

This morning the vet catherised him and drained his bladder. He was not blocked. At home he wAs only dribbling pee. She said he was having urethra spams. She prescribed him a muscle relaxer and said that should help. She's hoping he gets better this weekend or he will have to have surgery to have his male parts removed.

Can someone tell me what they think about all this? Will my cat get better???

I've never heard of such a thing (of course I'm new to all of this) - and understand how hard this must be with everything else on your plate at this time. I truly wish I knew something I could tell you to help with this... there is a lot of collective knowledge at this site so there is all the reason to believe that you will be able to find out more about what is going on.

You (and yours) are in my thoughts and prayers. Animals have remarkable abilities to heal if given a chance... thank you for giving him that opportunity.

What was her reasoning of having to have the surgery if not better by the weekend? I myself have never had a cat that had urinary issues so I have not had any personal experience with cats who have these type of issues. I do know if it was my cat I would be wanting to know why they would be suggesting this, along with doing as much research as I could.

From my own experience I know that vets are not always great about explaining things, especially after a serious diagnoisis on one of our beloved fur babies. When I was told that my 13 year old boy had ckd pretty much I was told to change his diet to the prescription food that they carried and that was about all. I got home and started researching everything I could about his condition and looked for guidance from forums. Hopefully someone here will have similar experience to what you are going through and will give you some guidance on where to find more information. Hoping that your boy is feeling better soon.

I'm sorry to hear about continuing troubles with your cat.
Here is a recently thread about PU surgery.
I know very little about this, but I wonder why cleaning out the bladder shouldn't be the first step.
Meanwhile vibes that the muscle relexant works!

I would want a better explanation of how the surgery is supposed to make him better, if he doesn't get better this weekend. I don't quite understand how his reasons for continued blockage are solved by having his penis removed.

None of us can tell you if he'll get better, but the chances are good because you are doing everything you can. Cats are tough, and they've survived stuff worse than what your boy is going through, as bad as that is. Your love and care means his odds are good.
