I have one piece of advice, not about the actual medical care, but, if you should go to the vet, and need prescriptions:

My employer lets us use our prescription plan if the meds prescribed by the vet can be used by humans (the dosage may be much different for pets). This may be much cheaper (you said that money was tight right now). You'd probably have to go to a (human) pharmacy, not get it filled by the vet's office. For example, Sarah Jane needed Erythromycin. I'm pretty sure I remember that from my childhood (Mom was a nurse, and I'm sure I heard her talk about it). I forgot about my health plan!  I paid a LOT for a little tube of ointment! Perhaps this would help with the costs for you. Please take them to the vet ASAP.

Are there no emergency vets? But if he seems to be Ok then keep a watch and wait till Wednesday. But I would advise you never to put anything into your cat's eyes stronger than warm water on cotton wool, that you have not bought from a vet or at least a pharmacy. Many cats have been killed or injured from medicines, insecticides and other 'harmless ' treatments like flea drops that have come from pet shops and supermarkets. Your cat's eyes are precious, do nothing to harm them.

I've shearched some stuff up.1.he can have the cat flu also known as conjunctivitis/cat herpesvirus.2.he can most likely have cherry eye with the 3rd eyelid is inverted and will need surgery to fix which cost about 300-$500.

From your description especially with his red eye being accompanied by sneezing, I would tend to lean towards him having an upper respriatory infection. My two 10 week old boys I had to take in for the same thing. Started with noticing sneezing, which had seemed to get better. Last night got home from work to find Leonard with a swollen eye, red around the edge of the outer lid, third eye lid showing and clear discharge. By this morning the discharge started looking pussy. I had talked to the emergency vet and because he was still eating and drinking he should be okay till morning if the swelling didn't get worse. Last night was rough for both of us, he was uncomfortable and was making sure to let me know it when ever I moved him and I was worried. One dose of antibiotics this morning and his eye ointment, I can already see he is feeling better. If your vet is unable to get him in on Monday, I would suggest seeing if you can find another vet that is close enough by that will see him. I know that my vet office is busy, but if you do have an animal that is in need of medical attention they will fit them in. If he stops eating or drinking than you definitly need to find either an emergency vet, or a vet that has on call hours available. Hope your boy is feeling better soon.

There are several things that could be wrong with him, and it is no good working yourself up about something specific until he has seen a vet. Cat flu is not herpes - flu is an acute illness that can kill a cat very quickly and the other is a chronic condition, like the human herpes virus, that in the cat shows up as eye inflammation. Swollen red eyes and a discharge, in other words conjunctivitis, are symptoms of both these illnesses. Both need antibiotics prescribed by a vet.

That website is confusing symptoms with virus. Look at this which explains it better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_calicivirus

ANd you are right, feline herpes virus is not a sexually transmitted disease but is caused by the same family family of viruses that cause the disease in humans.

Feline herpes is not nearly as contagious as calicivirus, and many cats carry the virus all their lives, having occasional flare-ups which cause eye inflammation. I have to give my Wellington an immune booster daily to try to prevent his eye becoming red, but he still has two or t hree bouts a year. None of my other cats have it, although he cuddles, sleeps and grooms with them.

No, it's not the same as human herpes.  Did you get him to the vet yesterday?

Glad to know he is better. To help him fight off future flare-ups I would suggest an immune booster like L-lysine daily. You can buy it online in a form developed for cats, or get it at a pharmacy or health shop in tablet or powder form that you can mix with his food. It could save you vet bills in the future.
