My Avatar's name is "Bowie" - named for David Bowie since he, too, seemed to enjoy 'guyliner" as much as possible! Bowie (the cat) is always looking "on" for anything - he's just a hoot!

a tiny bit on him ----after we swore we'd never even consider taking in another "full-timer" since we felt like we were often neglecting our current guys as-is. I was just finishing a single foster, when I got a call from the head of the shelter about fostering a neglect case of a cat that had been at the end of a long, long driveway, near a sign marked "GARAGE SALE" for multiple days

The kitten was in a type of small hamster cage, with no food or water or litterbox, and looked to be about 4 months. HE was out every day, rain

or shine, nor protection in that little cage - at least from early morning (app 7 am) till the sale shut down each night around 8 pm.. advertising that sale. The shelter owner had tried to buy the kitten - but the sale owner said it was bringing her "good luck" and she didn't want to sell it. Our shelter owner asked if she could at least give it food and water - and the owner wouldn't allow that either. By day 3, our shelter owner was frantic (and not that I'd endorse this) so at night grabbed the whole thing, shoved it under a big coat, and drove off., bringing him to me to see if I'd foster him.

He was so terrified - and I'd never seen a more starved kitten in my life. We started out slow - just a tad bit of food spread all over  a dish... and he ate so frantically he actually bit at and chipped the china dish! I switched to plastic and he tok big hunks out of the plastic! He knew right where the litterbox was  hasn't made a mistake since! He drank like crazy and I know he would have eaten until he blew up, but we took it slowly. And needless to say, he never made it out of foster and he's "our" now :)  We love him dearly - even though he's the most neurotic animal in the house! And because of his bad start, his sinus cavities never developed and he snuffles, and wheezes like an 85-year-old with asthma....but we love him!

(pic one is him with his sad face, where he'd tried to beat his head and nose against the bars of the hamster

cage to get out - he was bloodied and raw)) Pic 2 is him now - happy (dare I say fat and happy and heathy!)

That's our Bowie!!! Still scared of strangers, particularly men, sleeps on his back, loves to pay fetch, can't meow but does a mean "chortle".....we love him!

Kittychick, thank you for sharing Bowie's story. He has such a lovely face, it's no wonder that he is a bit neurotic with a background like that.

Good on your shelter owner for grabbing him like that, I'd have been tempted to do the same thing. He's lucky to have found a loving home with a family that understands his needs.

It's nice to see him looking so happy too, he's got a very contented expression.

Do you have a lot of other animals in your family?

Bowie is beautiful.  I love cow kitties.
Welcome to TCS.  Bless you, and your shelter owner, for being so kind.

We also have Phoebe, a Maine Coone mutt, who we adopted years ago (she'll be 20 this year). She was taken away from her Mom at only 6 weeks, & she's never lost that clingy/neediness (or crankiness to other cats).
She only weighs 5 1/2 pounds but she seems as healthy & happy as a permanently cranky 20-year-old can be!

We also have Allie (19 this fall) -another shelter adoptee.
She was a bottle baby (not mine) also brought to the shelter way too young (although she 's pretty well adjusted). This pic is her sleeping with her "adopted brother"-a muuuucccchhhh larger former foster ( that we couldn't let go) named Jo Jo. He's like a dog -follows my husband everywhere. Just a hoot.

We also have Moo Moo-a foster we also kept- & not the sharpest knife in the kitty drawer :)
but we love her!!!!!

We're caring (including TNR) for several outdoor ferals that a neighborhood guy has taken upon himself to encourage a feral colony (feeds but doesn't s/n).
Currently we're feeding/sheltering around 13 (have tnr'd 9 so far)& this pic is one of 2 of the 3 (pip, Izze & Buffer) i wrote about how wewe took in & socialized, & found homes for.

Lastly-right now we're fostering 2 6-week-olds we've had since 1 1/2 weeks....Scoot & Cooper-gonna be hard to take them back!

That's my family-we live a furr-filled life! And to think, my husband used to "hate cats"....now he's right up for 4 am feedings!

Oh boy, a house full of gorgeous cats and kittens.  Thank you for caring for them all.  Scoot and Cooper look quite at home you know, sure you're going to manage to part with them?

Bowie and all your other catrs are really lucky to find their home with you.

I swore to my husband I'd part with them - since I kept the last 3 we fostered (not counting Pip/Izze/Buffer - the three ferals pictured here that we socialized and found homes for - as many of you followed along through my very emotional process!). I do indeed love Scoot and Cooper (and can't you tell my husband could care less? KIDDING!)...but I know I have to do it if I want to foster again - and I know our area desperately needs foster homes. I will say I do dread sending them to the shetler - they want them back at 8 weeks - I'm going to hold them till 10 weeks if at all possible as there's tons of sickness running through that shelter here. Anyone think I'm crazy? I know the littler and cuter the better chance of adoption - I just want them healthy!

As long as they don;t completely break your heart when they go, NO I do not think you're crazy to try and keep them that little bit longer.  They will be just that little bit bigger and robust to go back in to that multi cat environment.

Also, could the shelter keep pictures of them so if anyone was interested they could let you know and you could take them in if someone wanted to meet them? That way maybe they could pretty much bi-pass having to live at the shelter at all and minimize the trauma moving causes for our kitties?

Somehow I missed the post be MServant-and I wanted to say thank you SO much for that great suggestion!!! I made a flyer for them -& think I 'll run it to the shelter tomorrow! It would indeed be the best if the shelter can be bypassed. I do think a caged shelter environment -plus the moving-is SO hard on them, physically & mentally. So going to take your advice & run with it tomorrow!!

Such a sweet face. Sometimes the black is so funnily placed. Blighty also has funny markings. I'm here as bowie doesn't meow
Nor does blighty. His meow is a squeaky ma ma and when he wants to be stroked it's sort of eh eh but very squeaky. It's amazing. He came off the street age 2 months and doesn't bite or scratch. At least not on purpose. His claws need clipping. That will be done next week when he goes to lose his manhood.
Sorry to have jumped on your spot. Please forgive.

Hi Norachan
How are you? Is it very cold now? Any snow? I've missed you.

When your ferals are done is the corner of one ear clipped. Blighty will be done next Wednesday. On the Mondays they do the ferals.

Lovely lovely lovely.
Did the ----- woman not try to find him?
The shelter lady could have threatened her that she'd bring the animals people for cruelty to animals.

No one ever tried to find Bowie. It was sad. But he's settled in now-quirks and all (he jumps at everything, runs from any little noise, hides under the bed at the slightest little sound outside....but he goes from that to complete "goopieness"
so I'm pretty sure he's as happy as can be! And in happy happy news -his two newest foster brothers cooper & Scoot just found a home together today!!!!!! Which will make Bowie much happier-he liked being the baby!!! Glad he's got people here who appreciate his funky markings, amd quirky twitchy bunny nose
