Would a food that has 3.5% fiber or a food that has 7% fiber be better for a kitten that has chronic loose stools? Or are the numbers too close to make a real difference? The kitten is better, by the way, after switching foods. I'm just checking for future reference.

Cats naturally eat a diet that has basically no fiber in it. As there are so many different causes for chronic loose stools, I would always recommend feeding a species-appropriate diet, and trying to identify the cause of the diarrhea: it may be an ingredient, it may be the balance of gut bacteria, it may be an unidentified parasite or pathogenic bacteria, if a PCR test was never done...

While an ingredient may have been the problem, it may also have been the balance of gut bacteria. Switching foods alters the GI tract environment.

Some cats do need a little fiber, but that is only cats with some type of compromised GI system, and that may not be the reason for the diarrhea. So I don't think there is any one answer that fits all cases.

Low fiber is the healthier choice, but it just depends too much on each individual situation.
