Hi everybody. I brought in my two calico sister cats, Charlie and Gemmie (one year old), to the vet to get spayed last thursday (oct 3). Charlie's doing absolutely fine, but I noticed that Gemmie appears to have possibly nibbled away at her stitches. I just discovered this about an hour ago and I'm kind of freaking out. She acting normal, just a little clingier than usual, eats well, and no problems in the bathroom department. I'm not entirely sure what a 6-day post-op incision should look like, but I know this isn't normal. She has a gaping hole (about the size of a dime) where the surgery took place. Help!

In the middle of Gemmie's tummy.

Sisterly love. Charlie and Gemmie.

Okay, maybe not the size of a dime, but I'm still freaking out that anything is still "open" almost a week later.

I would say that doesn't look right and a follow-up visit to the Vet is in order.  My concern is how pink the area around the opening is, plus the area right in the middle looks like pus, to me.  But, bottom line, you have her sister's incision to compare it to, and they aren't similar, so I'd take her in tomorrow to have it checked.

Adorable furkids, BTW

Agreed, vet visit tomorrow for you guys...

We've just done the spay thing, and had to do a return visit too.  Fortunately not the incision, but a stress reaction (gastro upset and got a bit dehydrated).  In any case, because it was associated with the spay, we didn't hesitate.  Thankfully with our spay, all the stitches were internal and dissolving, otherwise for sure my curious kitty would have 'got them out'!

Best wishes...

Hello and welcome to TCS.

Gorgeous cats and kittens!

I'll third the advise to take her back to the vet. That incision does look like it could be mildly infected. Don't panic though, it should be easily treatable.

The vet may suggest an antibiotic. If so, be sure they send you home with an oral type and to avoid letting them give her the Convenia shot. It is known to have possible adverse reactions in some cats, and in some cases, this includes death. Here is an article about it written by Dr. Pierson who is a vet. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=convenia. You may find other links on her site informative also.

Hope this helps and keep us posted. Sending you
she heals quickly.

I agree with the others it does look like she might have abit of a infection. A check with your vet would be best .
