I foster URI, underweight, nursing mom's, pre-post surgery kittens & cats. I have been doing this almost 2 years, and can't picture myself doing any other type of volunteer job. It is a part of my life. I have never owned a cat in my life. In fact I grew up with dogs. My family use to breed and show dogs back in the late 60"s-70's. I had started fostering dogs only because that's what I knew best plus we have a small dog. Well I had a litter of pups that got parvo, need I say more. My house was quarantined for 6 months from dogs, but I was told I could foster felines. I was scared, I knew nothing about them, all I had ever been told was that cats are the boss, you do what they want, they are unaffectionate and like to be left alone. Wow!! were those people wrong, in fact they have it all wrong. After my first 4 month old foster kitten I was hooked. I have read up on behavior watching tail, eyes, ears, etc.. but I want to learn more and am looking forward to learning from all of you. I don't know a lot of feline behavior meanings, but, know enough to not get bit. Kittens are easy, but sometimes the adult cats intimidate me, like the 15lb Siamese that I had to wear winter gloves to pick him up. Glad to report that 2 foster homes later for behavior assessment , the staff at the shelter found him his perfect home!! Yay! Hoping I can build up my confidence when working with adult cats too. Thank You!
