What was the antibiotic shot? If it is Convenia then it can have nasty side effects. Can be fatal.
My kitty got majorly cut open for foreign object removal surgery. She came home the same day with liquid oral
antibiotics and pain meds. They had me bring her back the next two days for hydration therapy. She didn't eat until
the 3rd day after surgery. Your cat needs breaks from the cone for their mental state. I took the cone off for feeding
and grooming with strict supervision. She was a lot happier. Can your kitty be gobbling food and then vomiting?
Your kitty should be well on the way to recovery by now.
What was the anesthesia? Metcam involved?

Lactated ringers, vitamin b complex. Told me i could stop antibiotics. After p.u. Surgery, it is vital they not be able to get to wound, stiches, so i can not remove collar. I don't understand. He is home. He has been hydrated. We will see how he does without antibiotics, meaning if he starts eating, drinking. So confused. Sad. This is not what i wanted for poor Gus....at all.

Also, no when he vomitted, only yellow bile. No food in his stomach.

What antibiotic was/is he getting? Antibiotics can definitely cause an upset stomach. Pain and discomfort can also cause vomiting. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Perhaps Gus just needs a little more time to get through this.

Sending lots of vibes...

I'm confused. You said Gus was given an antibiotic SHOT in your post above. AND he received a pain med shot.
What were the names of these?

It has been a week since Gus's surgery. He went back the first time because he was vomiting and not eating or drinking. (He was on at home tablets...clavamox(sp) antibiotic.)When he went in she hydrated him and gave him a shot of antibiotics. She switched his antibiotic to liquid amoxicllian and sent him home.Over the weekend he seemed at first bright and well, then slowly deteriorated. Stopped eating and drinking, threw up. This time,The second time, today, she gave him hydration and a shot of b complex. Told me to stop antibiotics entirely. He is still not eating, although he licked a little food,. I am at a loss. He is peeing and pooing. Peeing small amounts. But that makes sense as he isn't eating or drinking anything much at all. All i know is, this seems very unfair he should suffer, struggle like this and i am very angry. This, the back every 3 days, better, then declines is exactly what i did not want for him. I knew it would be a tough recovery, but vet seems as baffled as me as to why he eats at first, then stops.

So to clarify: gus is on nothing right now. Hoping he will eat and drink.

It' been @10 hours since his last dose of antibiotic, and just now he ate a small amount. I swear his system can not handle the antibiotic. Doctor said amoxicillan would not upset his stomach, but it seems every time he is on them for a couple of days same thing....throws up, stops eating. When he is not getting them orally, he starts to eat again, or so it seems.....i have tried it all...but, when he is well, he eats it all, when his stomach is off nothing entices him. My concern now is: shouldn't he be on an antibiotic? And if he can't tolerate them, what do i do? Take him back, daily for shots? I just do not know what to do. I guess you know it is a mystery when vet seemed to be asking me my opinion. Like i know! All i could tell her was i felt like it was the antibiotic. She hasn't any ideas of her own, clearly. Not happy. Gus is a brave little guy and frankly i feel like poo for putting him through this.

It is my understanding that Amoxicillin can cause upset stomach and nausea, as well as Convenia and Clavamox. Admittedly, I'm not well-versed in antibiotics. Two of mine have recently been on Baytril and Metronidazole because they are easier on the tummy, but certain antibiotics are targeted for certain conditions. Caesar was prescribed Baytril to help with both his UTI and intestinal inflammation. 1800petmeds.com claims that Baytril can be "used for infections of the urinary tract, skin, prostate, GI tract, liver, and lungs."

I'd be a little concerned that your vet is acting like she doesn't know what to do. What are the chances you could take Gus to another vet?

I am hoping it was the oral antibiotic that was making him ill. If the shot antibiotic is Convenia then it doesn't leave the body for 60 days.
It can cause lots of problems...even death in some cats. Google it. Yes, vets give the shot and also prescribe oral antibiotics on top of it! Who the heck knows WHY, but they do.
I hope your Gus starts to feel better soon!

Yes, i agree with you, the vet not knowing is very concerning. I have a sick feeling that he may be just saying goodbye. Or it is related to the antibiotics and p.u. Surgery. Many of the symptoms are shared.....not eating, somewhat restless, hiding in a box...could be either. I don't know if you know, this is the new vet...we moved too far away for old vet who i trusted with their lives, my life! The new vet is a hard read. And i am somewhat of an untrusting person anyway. Tonight Gus ate a little more. He purrs,he moves, he uses the litter box. I guess i have to wait and see how the rest of the night goes. And then perhaps seek a second opinion. It is just hard to think of dragging him to yet another vet office (my old vet made house calls), try and explain the whole thing, put gus through yet another new set of hands/exams. Maybe it was the antibiotics and for sure p.u. Surgery is long and hard. I just don't know. This is beyond hard. Heartbroken for my poor little guy. I am not any good at not knowing what is going on. I need a plan, a goal. But right now i don't even know the problem, let alone the solution or options. Sad. Thanks for listening, caring. PoorGus.

Your goal should be to get Gus eating regularly. I know the IV and sub-q hydration Mosi received the few days after her surgery helped her tremendously get her appetite back. I even added an extra smaller mealtime to keep food in her at all times. She is still on that schedule today!
You'll know soon if he stops eating entirely again that there is a problem. That is when you'll need to examine exactly everything they injected him with starting prior to his surgery. A new vet will need the info as well.
Yes, I know about stitches and cones. Mosi has had 4 surgeries. I let her eat and groom under strict supervision without her cone. I was glued to her. It helps with their mental state to act normal for a while and they are more content with their situation. Just saying...

Thank you for the good thoughts and advice. I totally agree...number one priority right now....he must eat, wet food. So far, he has eaten a bit more tonight. I was insensitive regarding the collar, snippy in fact. I am sorry. As an explanation...i adore my pets....i am exhausted, i am angry, i am confused, i would gladly take my eye out with a spoon to spare little Gus any more pain....it is sooo hard. I think you are absolutely right about giving him break, but i honestly don't believe (have the courage) I could put it back on once off...i so want it off, i so want Gus back to his free little self. Tonight, i did remove the tie the vet used, always seemed too snug, replaced it with a buckle nylon puppy collar, this way i can loosen it when i am with him, and make it snug when i am not with him, without taking e collar off. It helped him. I feel like i take care of one issue, another crops up. If i am right and it was the antibiotic, he should greatly improve by tomorrow. If not, i will be taking him to yet another new vet for an evaluation. I hate this. Thank you for your concern. I am utterly worn out. Days of blockages, one week down from p.u. Surgery. So that makes about a kazillion hours of tears and worry with a few..too few....happy hopeful moments.

I completely understand the exhaustion. I slept on the floor for two weeks just so Mosi wouldn't have reason to jump up on the bed. We stored her trees in the extra bedroom too. We were together 24/7. So relieved when stitches came out. Freedom for both of us!
Your Gus is still young. He needed the surgery. You're doing everything right. Don't neglect yourself during this time either.
Don't worry until you have to......

Gus is brighter today, moving about, eating some wet but not a lot. Not out of the woods yet (stiches out the 8th) but today is so far a good day. Thought though i would share a typical and very funny story about my other cat, Johnny, he has been feeling put out with all the attention Gus has been given, and well, story shows he will not be ignored. So last night i was watching a very scary show in the dark, just to get my mind on something else for an hour. The show was about an evil scary house. At the apex of suspense, i hear my kitchen cabinet open and bang shut, over and over. Guess who? Yep, my Johnny....attempting to get at pet food in cabinets.....guess he did not care for the food he already had out. Just about scared the poo out of me. Oh johnny. Mommy's heart is really strong, thank you very much!
I decided today to try to the best of my ability to treat Gus like i did when he was well, cheery voice, sing to him, as opposed to soft concerned voice. Thinking: if i act like he will be fine, maybe he will feel more confident. I have blocked off the two bedrooms and bath upstairs (so Johnny and my three terriers can't get in) so he has choices. Opened windows in one room so he can sit and look out. Before this all happened, gus was a free little fellow who came and went at will. Obviously he can't be totally free, but this gives him more room and a sense of it. He has a small amount of bleeding where vet messed around with his incision. Darn it. But, she said he was healing well. Here's to a good day. Has it really only been a week since surgery? One more week....come on little fellow! We can do this, then...freedom from e collar!

Today Gus pushed down the screen that keeps him upstairs in his "recovery wing" and came down stairs acting very much like his old self! Jumped on the table, banged aout in his e collar, hissed at the terrible terriers (his words, not mine!) and had a little look about. I am delighted, elated. He enjoys his wet food. Pees and poos. Stiches and e collar off next tuesday....finally! My vet keeps insisting i put vaseline on his stiches below his new urinary hole. And take a wet cloth to pat area. He absolutely is not having it, and i do my best. Has anybody else had their vet ask this of us care takers? In all my reading, i never hear anyone say they have to mess with the site at all. I am curious. She says it is to prevent urine scalding, but Gus is not dribbling, and has mastered the squat and pee thing really well. As you can imagine, i am loathe to cause him any distress after all he has endured. It's like he said today: enough already, i want to rejoin the family. Lol. That's my little guy!
