Hey guys!

Thank you for your concern!  He started eating! The vet instructed me to cut back his pain med if he hadn't started eating within 24 hours of his return. I did this and his appetite indeed picked up thankfully!  I have scheduled it so he gets fed right before he gets the pain med, so it is pretty much wearing off when its dinner/breakfast time. It is working well :)

He hasn't had a bowel movement since we brought him home 4 days ago (mind you he didn't eat until Sunday night) - so we took him back to the vet today to see if he was constipated.  He got an x-ray and he is definitely due for a bowel movement in the next 24 hours but isn't constipated cause its not hard stool.  Since he has been strictly on the C/D canned diet, the vet said there isn't much fiber in there, so he is alternating between wet and dry food (both C/D) today to hopefully induce a BM.

Other than that, he is looking great! Thank you all for your positive vibes and support!

Will touch base tomorrow on his BM (lol)!

That is good news! It took my kitty 5 days after eating to have a bowel movement after her FO surgery....so right on schedule!

Thanks Pushylady! All he needs to do is poop and I can say he is recovering perfectly!

Mosimom, it makes me feel so much better that your little one took a few days to have a bowel movement after she started eating again.  Very relieving.

Keeping my fingers crossed to find some poop tomorrow!

Great that he is eating!
Just be careful with that dry food. IMO, he doesn't really need that to produce a bowel movement. You're better off talking to your vet about adding a little Miralax or something to his wet food. You'll want to eliminate dry food completely as @Gusmom has done.

GoHolistic, yes I am a bit concerned with the dry food as well. I have given him a bit, but ensuring he has more than enough water mixed in with his wet food to keep him hydrated and peeing like crazy (lol).  I took him back into the vet today as he still did not poop, they gave him a kitty laxative so hoping he'll have a BM over night. I will be cutting out the dry food for sure, I have a whole bag of it though, so maybe just give him a few kibbles here and there for treats? I do like the idea of him getting something crunchy to clean his teeth. What do you think?

It's really just a myth that dry food cleans their teeth, but a lot of "old school" vets (with all due respect) will still say this. It's probably okay to offer them as treats here and there. I wouldn't give too much at once or too often, but that's just me. You could also try to donate it. Some shelters won't take open bags, but some will if you explain why the bag wasn't finished.

Yay! He had a BM last night! I am so relieved (and I bet he is too)!
LOL. I bet he is!

Hey guys, just have a little bit of a concern. He is peeing fine, but I feel like over the past few days there was minimal to no blood in his urine, but he just peed again right now and there seems to be a bit more blood in the urine than before. Is it normal for him to still have some bloody urine after a week after surgery?  There is also a bit of yellowish discharge on the area. Any advice/experiences with those who have dealt with the recovery process. Would love to get your thoughts/opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Note: he just pooed too. Could the blood have been present more because he was trying to poo and was straining more than he would have if he was just peeing?  Still a bit concerned about the discharge - vet is closed today for holiday, I will call tomorrow and ask them but still would like to hear your opinions.

Will he allow you to look at the area? You can clean it by very gently patting the area with a clean, damp cloth. It's better if it's a white cloth, you'll be able to see any discharge better.

Is he on antibiotics still? It would be a good idea to take him for a check tomorrow. If he stops eating or isn't acting normally you may want to bring him to an emergency vet.

Hey Nerdrock,

We got some gauze and make it damp with warm water to clean his behind and pat the area down.  The discharge seemed to be an isolated event.

We took him to the vet and he had a bladder infection :( poor guy. He was on baytril but the vet switched him to zenequin.. and gave him a shot of convenia. He is peeing bigger puddles now and less frequent trips to the litterbox. The blood is also appearing less and less in his urine! That shot worked very quickly, we noticed an improvement only a few hours after bringing him home!

Did they do a urine culture to determine the infection?
I'm surprised they would give Convenia for that kind of infection.
From what I've read it doesn't really help.
Please watch your kitty in case it doesn't clear it up. I would definitely
plan on having a culture done in two weeks to be sure the infection is gone.

You may want to monitor your kitty closely for side effects that MAY occur with
the Convenia shot alone.

Mosimom, the convenia shot worked really quickly for him (I noticed less frequent litter trips, more urine produced, and less blood in urine after a few hours) - however, I have just done some research on it and am pretty freaked out with all the horror stories. I will NOT be letting him get this shot ever again despite the fact that it seemed to have worked well for his infection. I have been monitoring him very closely and haven't noticed anything weird with him (thank god). I am currently doing more research to try and find out how quickly a reaction or any negative symptoms may come on after the shot. Most of the stories have said that negative effects came on within a day of the shot, but other sources have said it could take a few days - so I am very concerned. I will continue to keep a watchful eye on him.

He is scheduled for a urine analysis in 4 days when he gets his 2 week check-up after PU surgery!

Thanks for your concern! I will keep updating!

Don't freak until you have to. Convenia does help some cats too and
most don't have any problems with the shot. You probably now know
what the negative side effects are to look for and you can act without hesitation
and confusion if needed.

I ran across this drug when I was researching and educating myself due to getting my first cat.
It is something I talked to my vet about when we met the first time. I had it put on Mosi's chart that
I never wanted her to have this drug and I was to be consulted about everything put into her body no matter what......

Thank Mosimom! I started to look for a bunch of positive Convenia experiences before I went to bed so I could actually sleep lol I found quite a few so I felt a bit better.  Still on alert though!  Hes acting normal, and as said, the infection is clearing up. Minimal blood in urine now :) Although anxiety-cat-mom stepped in thinking, OMG what if the blood has stopped so quickly because hes got anemia now lol however, with some logical thinking I realized it wasn't just the blood that stopped appearing but he was also urinating bigger puddles and less frequently so clearly the infection is being cleared up. It's so easy to jump to conclusions and stress out when you're worried about your baby.

Good call on putting it on your vet file! That's exactly what I am going to do now too. They will just administer it without informing. Witty went into the back to get his area cleaned, and came back with a clean area and a shot of convenia into him. We were not informed they were doing that. I didn't know the potential side effects or anything at the time so who knows if I would have let them administer it even if they asked, but the fact that it was a 2 week lasting shot would have made me question it at least.  I trust my vets - they have been very good with us and our pets over the years so I am not angry with them or anything, but I will discuss Convenia more thoroughly with him next time we go and request to not have him on it again.

Witty is still doing great! Tomorrow he has his check-up and if everything is healed well and good to go, he can finally be cone-free and have roam of the house again :)
