About 3 hours ago I treated my boy Frankie with Profender, a topical de wormer prescribed by the vet. Frankie's stool sample came back positive for round worms. All I want to know is how soon will he start expelling the worms? This is my first time doing this and I don't know when he will start passing them. I was kinda expecting the medicine to start working by now. Should I be concerned? My vet spoke of the possibility of intestinal blockage if all the worms died at once and that for the next 12-24 hours I need to watch him. I am a very over protective mama with Frankie and I am over here waiting for him to use the bath room so I can check his feces and remove it from his litter. Please someone settle me down. I need to know what to expect.

I haven't had personal experience with dewormers, but I found this answer from a vet on the just answer website.

As for your original question regarding Profender. Profender is comprised of two dewormers; praziquantel and emodepside. This drug is indicated for hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms. Keep in mind that it may take up to 24 hours for the topical drug to absorb systemically. The praziquantel reaches peak serum levels within two hours so any tapeworms that she may have should be killed at that point. In short, internal parasites should be killed within 36 hours, and eliminated in the feces within 48-72 hours.

THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING !!!!!! Goldy I have been sitting at my dining room table for hours on guard duty with his litter box. I  supposed I can relax and just allow nature to take its course now. I was looking for immediate results. I just wasn't sure what to expect. Thanks again!!!

I realize that cats and horses are different, but I've only ever seen expelling of worms on a scary level with 2 VERY infested horses. I've seen gut motility issues too, but equine gut motility is a very complicated issue. Basically I think your kitty is more than likely OK, but yes it is a good idea to watch him.

I know that this isn't funny, but I'm picturing you on your hands and knees with a pooper scooper in hand each time he goes potty...and each time he leaves he looks at you like, "What?":lol3:.

Well, you actually aren't too far off. Maybe 3 minutes ago he started sniffing his box and I was like YES FINALLY !!!! And then he walked on by and I said a few chice words. Frankie looked at me as if he was saying, what I do ? I'm really aware of how I must appear especially to my husband. He asked me to run to the store and I said absolutely not cause I am on litter box duty. He called me a poor baby....

What can I say? I love my cat !!!!

I feel ya! I've been called the crazy cat lady by people who like cats! It is a good idea to watch him though. If he starts acting funny, call the vet for guidance.

Sometimes, depending where the worms were lurking, they get digested instead of expelled. So you might not see any. . .

Just wanted to send good vibes and let you know that someone out there cares :) my cat has ringworm - no worms, but a highly contagious fungus. Good luck and I bet you'll be celebrating when your kitty poops! And this too shall pass! :)

Thanks all for the feed back. I'm still worried on this end and probably unnecessarily. Frankie appears to be fine. He is eating, playing, grooming and talking as he usually does. However, I cannot believe that yesterday and the day before, he had diarrhea, And now.... he isn't pooping at all. I did have him on a fast per the vets orders last night. So he didn't consume the amount of food he usually does in a day. But he did eat some chicken and rice..... so why hasn't he pooped? I was expecting him to still have diarrhea because the vet told me to expect it cause of the profender.

I have settle down some though. I stopped stalking the litter box ( as much ) and watched some t.v.  I won't be happy though until I can scoop a turd out of his litter box. Crazy isn't the very thing that will make me happy? I must be crazy. Crazy in love with Frankie !!!

When my cats had them the vet gave them one pill and it killed the worms right away. Be super careful though make sure you keep your hands clean. Especially after cleaning there box as they can transfer to you.
