I was in a local pet store a few days ago and say that Instinct came out with a new line of food, Pride. I've always liked their food, but my kitten was never the biggest fan. I brought a can of the chicken home to him and he seemed to like it well enough. Has anyone tried this food before? Any opinions about it's ingredients? I've been kinda put off by the clay in both this and the instinct food.

Ingredients:

Chicken Broth, Chicken, Chicken Liver, Peas, Egg Whites, Spinach, Eggs, Ground Flaxseed, Carrots, Montmorillonite Clay, Natural Flavor, Sodium Phosphate, Salt, Dried Kelp, Potassium Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Cobalt Proteinate, Potassium Iodide), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid), Taurine, Guar Gum, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate, Choline Chloride, Cassia Gum, Xanthan Gum, Artichokes, Cranberries, Pumpkin, Tomato, Blueberries, Broccoli, Cabbage, Kale

Here's a discussion of the clay issue:

FYI, there are many grades of clay. There is bentonite clay sold for detox, actually. It can be a healthy addition. In the NV foods, they state it is an anti-caking agent.

At this point, I'd be more concerned about a lot of the protein coming from the peas and eggs, rather than the meat.

It's somewhat meaningless to use the guaranteed analysis to calculate the carb content, but they don't provide an average nutritional analysis. :( For a canned food, it's rather high in fiber, it seems. And on a dry matter basis, it is

40% protein
20% fat
15% fiber
12.5% carbs

That's a lot of carbs and fiber, IMO.... Personally, I'd probably choose Fancy Feast over this. :dk:

...I just compared it to the Instinct chicken (DMB basis). The Instinct chicken, DMB (based on guaranteed analysis) is:

44% protein
32% fat
12% fiber
2% carbs

Though I think Dr. Pierson has NV canned in her food list (which is based on average nutritional content, not the guaranteed analysis).

With the Pride vs the Instinct, you're basically just trading fat for carbs. :dk:
