Background info: My cat had a lump (possible puncture wound) that had to be cleaned out (pus) and stitched up. She had to go back a few days later because the wound was very infected, the wound was completed opened up again, flushed, cleaned out and then stitched back up. I took her back in again today because the wound had started to ooze a yellow ( clear not pus) which was very smelly. The vet squeezed it a little, injected a bit of antibiotic cream in between where the stitches had come apart and gave her a shot of convenia. This is now her third shot of convenia. She has had each one just over 2 weeks apart because prior to this wound incident, she had dental surgery and then her gums didn't completely heal so she had another shot, just before the wound happened. She has never had an adverse reaction to convenia. She has been wearing an Elizabethan collar so she hasn't been licking or picking at her stitches

Now, 6 hours after seeing the vet, she is breathing more rapidly than normal, has a fever (104) and seems unhappy and in pain. She is curled up beside me. I gave her an ice pack wrapped in a towel to help with the fever. I have some bupenex that the vet gave me after the initial 2 surgeries ( and she also took it after dental surgery). Should I give her a dose of this? She ate about half her breakfast but then didn't eat again since coming home from the vet.

If she is still like this in the morning I would take her to the local vet again, of course, but our emergency vet is 45 minutes away and very busy. If i took her there now i doubt they would do anything but put her on an iv fluids (I've had experience with this clinic before) any other suggestions for what I can do for her?

I am guessing she has an abscess.  I don't understand why the vet keeps stitching it back up that just keeps the infection from draining.  You're cat really needs to be seen by another vet.  There is a lot of controversy about convenia, it could have finally built up in her system and this could be a reaction to it.  It could also be the infection,

I haven't had much experience with puncture wounds on cat, but I have treated a lot of horses and dogs for them.  I was taught that if the cat can reach it they can keep it cleaner.  Only a little help from antibiotics.  In my opinion pro trumps anti every time.

Keeping the wound open was always the #1 rule.  Letting it heal from the inside out. I've used a very mild, diluted antiseptic (sterile water) as a daily flush.  There was sometimes a problem with the object that caused the wound still being there, buried deep in the tissue.

Could there be a dietary supplement to boosting her immune response?

I will ask that a drain be put in tomorrow, the wound is currently partially open because of the gap in the stitches that opened up. There isn't much draining out anymore though. I think the vet thought that the wound was completely cleaned out because she had flushed it and cleaned out the damaged tissue (twice!). There was absolutely no sign of problem this time around 4 days after it was sewn up. Also about 2 days after the convenia was due to be out of her system( or at least not effective any more which is 14 days after the shot)

I will take her back in tomorrow morning, just wondering how to make her comfortable in the meantime? I did end up giving her a dose of buprenex.

A soft nest in the sun spot, and lots of love that gets that purr going.  I think for a cat that purring is as good for them as laughter is for people
