I work in Borneo and look after a number of stray cats, who I have been caring for for the last year. One of them has had a non-productive cough and sore throat for the last 4 months. I have taken him to the vet and we have tried numerous antibiotics which have had no effect. he is still eating plenty but is slowly losing weight. The vet has done Feline HIV and Leukemia tests which were negative. Any ideas? The vet services here are not well resourced, so an x-ray etc is not possible. Any ideas?

Feline herpes virus and possibly a secondary infection that the antibiotics aren't clearing up.  Can the vet do any kind of lab testing like s culture?

I'm not sure but I don't think so, things are very rudimentary here as you can imagine. I don't think there is a lab anywhere here. I will check today. Thanks very much for your response, much appreciated.

Just called the vet, no lab facilities and he doesn't think they can offer any other help to him as he has already tried all the antibiotics they have :(

No he doesn't. Other than eating a little less and gulping when he eats, like his throat is sore, plus the occasional deep, wheezy cough, you wouldn't know he had anything wrong with him. Still playing, demanding strokes and purring loudly. Just a bit thinner. Thanks for the info. Appreciate that you took the time to reply. It's a bit of an uphill struggle caring for the local cats here. But I still love them just as much as my house cat at home.

Well, what you describe sounds like it could be polyps, so that is why I mentioned them. Your situation does sound challenging (and frustrating!). I truly wish you and kitty the best of luck!

I'm not sure. I may be able to get a human antihistamine, but not an animal one. Is Claritin also used for humans?

Claritin is a human medication.  The generic name is Loratadine.  I give my girl 1/4 to 1/2 of a 10mg tablet once a day in her wet food.  I would be careful with other antihistamines such as benedryl and others as I don't know if they work with kitties or if they are fatal.
