Kitten Vomiting

I recently rescued from a scam artist posing as a foster. It's a blessing I fell for his scams because she was seriously neglected. On her first night with me, I noticed she had fleas. The following morning, I took her to the vet who determined she also had worms. Because she is only 6 weeks, he gave me a mousse to treat her fleas and gave her deworming medication. I was so worried that I forgot to ask what medication he gave or what side effects there are (although I feel like he should've just told me). About 8 hours after the vet visit, she threw up. I assumed it was the sudden change I made to dry, so I we t back to the royal canin baby cat wet food. All was well until around 8 tonight when she threw up again, twice. I've decided not to feed her again and to encourage her to drink water until the morning. If she throws up again, I'll def take her back to the vet; but she isn't lethargic and she's behaving normally (for the 2.5 days I've had her)

Could it be the deworming medication? Should I freak out? Also, I still see live adult fleas even though I applied the mousse.

Has anyone used DE? Should I buy that? Basically.....HELP!!!!

Hi and welcome to thecatsite!

The vet most likely gave her drontal which is a safe wormer but in rare cases it does cause vomiting. I would call the vet and let them know she may be experiencing this side effect and ask for their opinion as what to do.

It is also very likely she is vomiting is due to the sudden food change. Any food change should be done slowly.

I am just wondering what your reasons are for switching to a dry diet? In my opinion, as well as many others, a wet diet is best for cats as they are obligate carnivores who as desert animals need to get moisture from there food. Food is a personal decision but there is a lot of misinformation out there as most vets are not trained in feline nutrition. If you would like to read a little bit more on feline nutrition from a vet who is an expert take a look at (www.catinfo.org).

Good luck and keep us posted!

I'll definetely call the vet tomorrow to find out what's up. I wanted to get her used to dry because I will be working during the day next month, and I want to leave dry food out for her. I know wet food is better because it keeps them hydrated and reduces the risk of calcium stones, but I live in an apartment building with not so clean neighbors, and I don't want to attract roaches by leaving wet food out during the day. Any recommendations on how to introduce her to dry food without shocking her body?

Usually cats do well when fed 2-3 meals a day but I do understand with a kitten you may need add more calories with dry if you have to be gone all day. I would still try to feed as much wet as you can and supplement with dry when you go. You can feed one wet meal in the morning before you leave, one after work and another before bed.

FYI dry food will attract roaches just as much as wet food. When I used to live in an apartment building with also not very clean neighbours I would put the bowels of food in larger bowels or plates filled with water. I read that this was supposed to keep roaches from getting the food and it seemed to work as far as I could tell.

As for introducing a new food you start slowly by mixing a little in with her wet at first, but make sure it is moist with water because of her age.. Was she still drinking her mother's milk at the rescue or a milk replacement? If she is used to having milk with her wet food you could add some goats milk or KMR.

I would try to pick a good grain free dry to help prevent stomach upset. As for all right dry foods to feed Natures's variety has a limited ingredient dry which is easy on the stomach and Wysong Epigen 90 is supposed to be another good dry food. These food are more expensive than some others but you have to feed a lot less because they have a lot of calories A better option would be to leave out freeze dried meals. Ziwipeak sells a freeze dried food and so does stella and chewy's and both are complete and balanced to feed as a meal.

I was planning on feeding her wet only when I was home. I bought royal canin baby cat food after reading many positive reviews. I'll try mixing the dry into the wet in small increments until she seems comfortable with the dry. Thank you for your help! This new mommy business is stressful.

Oh yes the baby cat is fine and is pretty good for young cats because it is so small. Remember to get it soft with water when you first start to mix it in so it is easier for her to digest.

I can totally relate about the new mom nerves I still have them after 5 years lol

Thanks for your advice! I'm going to spread her food out on a larger plate to force her to slow down. I made a wet/dry/milk combo this morning that she LOVED. She refused to eat just the wet. Hopefully these new measures will help. She seems fine now. She's attacking various inanimate objects and being a vicious baby. I'll continue to monitor her. I really think it may be the medication.

She threw up again. I called the vet and he said to bring her in if it continues. She hasn't thrown up in 2 days so I thought it was getting better. She also threw up this foamy stuff. It's kinda like when we feel nauseous and over salivate. I'm not gonna feed her again. I'm just going to give her water and kmr. I'm thinking its the royal canin. Any thoughts?

I forgot to say that this morning she made loose stool. But her stool after that has been solid. She seems normal. She normally sleeps through the day with bursts to kitten madness here and there.

Yes it may very well be the RC baby cat. From my memory it does have grains in it and a lot of cats can not digest it (well actually most can't because they are obligate carnivores). I would still give her some wet food tonight mixed with the kmr as kittens need a lot of calories. I would also stick to the wet for a few days. Since I know you are concerned about her not eating while you are at work I would look into either getting a freeze dried raw food like stella and chewy's or primal or getting a grain free dry. I recommend the nature's variety limited ingredient turkey dry food for cats with GI issues.

I'll look into those. I made a vet appointment for tomorrow morning. I figure its better to b safe than sorry. I also plan to ask him about alternatives to pyrethrins.
