I know Friskies wet food isn't nearly as good as other brands out there (or raw) but that's currently what Nigella is on until my shipment of Wellness and Merrick come in and I can begin mixing/switching her to better food.

I also know that it's basically processed crap but I was wondering how they manage to make the food look like actual chicken in the prime filet variety? Am I missing something here? Is this all just a gimmick to make me feel like I'm feeding her actual chicken?

I wish Nigella would eat pate because the higher quality foods seems to come only in pate (most) so I have limited options.

Fortunately, there is some real chicken in there. Tiki Cat is a healthy shredded chicken option. It's very pricey though.

Yeah, I saw in the ingredients list there was. I was just thinking how they managed to make the byproduct and all the other crap form into what looks like chicken pieces.

I'll take a look at Tiki Cat. There seems to be a shop nearby that stock them, albeit a shop that I really detest because of how they treat their live animals (kitties in boxes with no lights on in the cages) so maybe I'll just order online.

Andddd now I'm going to be sad thinking about those kitties in that pet store.

Although there is chicken in the food, the pieces are not 100% meat, such as all white meat chicken. The chunks are formed during the manufacturing process with the aid of wheat gluten. In looking at the ingredients list, there is also soy flour and corn starch-modified, which are possible other aids in forming the pieces or as thickeners for the gravy.

Some brands will form chunks using a gum, such as guar gum or cassia gum.

I tend to navigate towards the pate-style foods because they usually do not contain wheat gluten.

Ah, I understand. I figured there had to be some process to get the non-meaty chicken stuff into that shape. Tricky, tricky.

Thank you!

You also need to read the ingredients for each different flavor of the Prime Filets. Some of them have an actual meat as the first ingredient and some start with byproducts. It irritating because most of my cats won't eat the pate and I have to keep looking for something formed into chunks. It's unfortunate that all of the high-quality brands I've found that make chunky food are out of my price range.

I have the same problem. I bought a pack of Merrick and Wellness Minced though I'm not sure Nigella will like either of them. I bought individual cans at PetCo but she's a fussy eater so even after a week or two of mixing them in with Friskies I wasn't sure if she favoured one or the other.

I have to suck it up as she doesn't drink water from the water bowl and eats a mostly wet food diet. I'm terrified she doesn't get enough water as it is.

If you have ever eaten faux chicken, the soy kind, they form it into chunks about the size of McNuggets. It is usually done with gluten.
