Hi

My maine coon is now 13mths old and still on kitten food (Royal Canine Maine coon Kitten) and this is down so that he may graze all day as he wishes.  He also has half a pouch of kitten wet food in the morning and the other half in the afternoon.

When can I progress him on to adult food, which is the best?

He has been neutered

Kindest regards

Jayne

Hello....I have two wonderful Maine Coons.....they are awesome cats!!

First.....get your cat off of the Royal Canin.  Our cats were on the same food when they came home from the breeders.  Cats don't need GRAINS!!!  Maine Coons are big....they need MEAT!!!  I do use grain free kibble....but try to get your cat on a good quality wet food....with no grains.....if you like the raw option that is great.....or....try the freeze dried raw.  I don't like raw, but am a fan of what it does for cats.  I use the freeze dried route and it works great!!

At 13 months he is definitely old enough for adult food. For future reference, kittens really don't need a "kitten" food. They just need to eat frequently, and pretty much as much as they want until they are near 1 yr and possibly even well before 1 year. As he is a male, I agree getting him off dry food altogether would be better for him, if your able. Here is an article explaining why, written by a vet http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth. If you explore her articles, she lists many other reasons also.

Hope this helps and welcome to TCS.

hi

Thanks for the advice, and excuse me for being a tad blonde.  what is the freeze dried raw and where do I get it from?

do you leave food down all day so your cat grazes or are they fed at certain times.

a bit of a novice with my main coon, first one I've had and want to do right by him

many thanks

A really good one is Feline Natural...it comes from New Zealand.  Also Primal is good as well.  I also feed a high quality canned food.  For the past couple of years I have been feeding Addiction....also from New Zealand.  All of these are available at local retailers....or from online retail stores as well.

I do use a kibble....but trying to get them to eat more wet food.  I will leave the kibble down...but I won't leave the wet food down all day....usually a few hours then pick it up if they haven't eaten everything.

Freeze dried raw can be found at some pet food stores, and some stores will order it for you. It can also be bought online. Stella and Chewy's is the only one I'm familiar with. You add water as directed, allow to rehydrate, then feed. No, it can not be left down like dry if rehydrated. It can be used dry as a topper on wet food. I'm not sure I'd leave it out for an extended period of time even if not rehydrated. It is raw, though dehydrated, and environmental moisture could, I would think, make it start to go bad if left out too long. I don't know.

Scheduled feedings IMO are best for cats. Cats allowed to graze all day can become obese. Mine eat 3 times a day, morning, late afternoon, and just before I either leave for work (I work nights) or go to bed when I'm off. And they rarely snack. I feed raw and truely believe, again IMO, it's the best thing I did for my cats.
