Mine don't seem to be scared of most noises. Even when the smoke detectors go off (LOUD), it's just like "oh, she's burned the toast again".

Two things l can think of that does send the older two running: one is the doorbell. They don't come out when visitors are here.

And the other is tinfoil! lf they're in the vicinity when l'm tearing tinfoil on the box-edge, they wince and run.

Angel runs & hides under the bed when I vacuum too. He also will leave the kitchen when I shake open a new trash bag. I took out my big exercise ball once to stretch over, & he ran from it, like it was a big monster!

I just remembered....my Dolly and Wren run when they see me with any type of paper toweling, even if it was Lysol wipes or Swift dust wipes.

in transition...
My Tiramisu is frightened by open umbrellas! As long as they're tightly shut he ignores them, but the moment you start to open one he tenses up; and if we leave one open to dry he'll hide in the back room until it's gone or give it a WIDE berth and suspicious glances if he absolutely must walk past it for some reason.

He also is terrified of strangers, poor guy, which is odd because his brother LOVES meeting new people.

Archer is afraid of the vacuum cleaner and the broom.  The vacuum I understand because of the obnoxious loud noise, but I don't know why he's afraid of the broom.  At least he's not terrified of either of them, though, because he sits where he can watch me cleaning but far enough away that he's safe:)  Oh, and he's afraid of his flea treatment.  You'd think we were killing him when we have to put it on him!  Otherwise he's a very brave and curious boy.  One thing that he loves that you'd think he'd be afraid of is the garbage truck!  As you probably know garbage trucks are quite loud, but Archer goes running to the window to watch it do its thing (it's one of those trucks that lifts the bins instead of a person getting out to do it) and then runs to another window to watch it drive away.  Silly boy:)

Hugo, on the other hand, is afraid of a lot, but then he's just a timid kitty who had a very rough start.  He's terrified of the vacuum and has to run and hide under the covers on the bed when he even sees me pull it out of the closet.  He's also afraid of strangers and runs to hide even if he hears the doorbell.  Archer, on the other hand, goes running to the door to see who it is:)

Luckily neither of them seem to be afraid of the airplanes flying overhead, which is a very good thing considering that we live in the airport's flight path & the planes are LOUD!  Especially when the fighter jets fly overhead over to Pearl Harbor!

My cat runs away from fruits.  I show her a banana and she backs away and tries to hit it.   But my other cat, he doesn't care.

The vacuum cleaner monster and the lawnmower monster are high on the list at our house.

That said, last Xmas time I was working at a toy store stocking shelves and bought a life-size stuffed kitten with my discount. It was only $5 or the like. I spayed it with feliway and plunked it down in the middle of the living room floor. I thought maybe they'd think it was real. I was hoping they'd play with it. Boy did they give that thing a wide berth!

Ritz didn't use to be afraid of thunderstorms when I lived on the top floor of a condo building.

Now that I am in a ground level townhouse, she is somewhat afraid of thunder.  She runs under the table or to the middle of the hallway.  I sit next to her to try to comfort her.

Personally I love thunderstorms, and I had hoped my love of them would rub off on Ritz.

ArcherBaby--Funny about the broom.  A friend and I were fostering a very feral young cat.  She was fascinated by the sweeping movement of the broom, just watched and watched up sweeping the rug/foor.

The only thing I've seen my boy really afraid off SO FAR is his own image in a mirror the first time he saw himself! It was the day I adopted him and he tentatively walked in to my living room then saw himself in a mirror which was down at floor level at the other end of the room.  He froze, then tanked off down the hall and hid under my bed for ages. He wouldn't come back in to that room for over 24 hours! Other than that, more than 2 years later he isn't afraid of anything YET but still checks out the mirror in the corner of the room occasionally, and doesn't like loud noises (he doesn't like the hoover for that reason but doesn't run away). He copes well with thunder and fireworks too strangely enough. New visitors are to be investigated and checked out to see if they can be played with.

One of my previous cats hated the hoover but her sister didn't bother about it at all. That was until she was snooping about when I was vacuuming out a corner of a room with a cylinder cleaner and the foot off the bottom of the hose one day. She was really close to where I was cleaning out and as she moved suddenly her tail got sucked up! The reaction was much like the sponge story.... Poor baby. She gave it a suitably wide birth after that.

The sponge story made me LOL, and the bananas and grapes are brilliant! I'd love to know what's behind the banana batting. This is  fascinating stuff.

mine aren't afraid of the vaccuum, as they'd sit and observe.. but if I get too close, they'd move out of the way.

They're really afraid of my young nieces (3, 5 and 7). I don't blame them, I'd be afraid of kids screaming and chasing me around and trying to pull me from under the bed too!

Recently one morning a severe thunderstorm rolled through. Dolly was on the window sill watching the rain and stayed there. The only time I saw her run was when there was lightning and thunder right overhead.

That's the funniest thing I've ever heard! You just made me laugh so hard I sprayed coffee all over the computer.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the cat carrier yet!

Jasper is another one who hears the doorbell and hides. Last time was too cute. He was sitting on my bed and when the doorbell rang he jumped up and dived under the doona.

I have seen long ago that some cats love to ride the sweeper. Bella & Thunder would never do that.

Demon gets startled by loud noises sometimes, other than that he is fearless. He checks out every visitor to the house and passes judgement. I turned on the Roomba for the first time in the new house and he just watched it. Totally fearless.

Belle on the other hand hates new people. Took her years to come around our best friend. And Vi is young and still gets spooked at new sounds.

My cat is afraid of the garden hose.  I think it's more than a game to her because she'll approach it very gingerly and then bat at it, backing up and watching afterwards.  Pretty funny since nothing else, even vacuums and thunder bother her.

My cats have a strange relationship with the garden hose. I only got one about a week ago. (I asked my husband if he'd help with the garden and his reaction was to go out and buy a hose, then go back to his video game ~sigh~)

Whenever I water the garden most of my cats run in terror from the EVIL RAIN MAKING SNAKE MONSTER except for Tom Kitten, who is basically aquatic, and keeps pouncing on the stream of water.

I have to keep a towel hanging on the line so I can dry him off.
