My 2 ferals hate certain sounds and devices. They get scared and run when I get the vacuum out and when I spray any sort of Lysol or Febreeze. They also hate the sound of when I take any plastic bag and shake it to open it.

My Dolly hates the sound of the dishwasher, laundry machine, and drier.

To other cat owners, which household items and sounds are your felines afraid of?

I think vacuum cleaners are usually a big one.

Mine are such woosies that they will jump at any loud noise.

Mogli doesn't like the vacuum cleaner. He'll leave the room if I'm running it and he isn't already up in a high place. He's fine with fans and other appliances, though.

Jamie was really afraid of grapes. That was due to the time he swatted at a wasp on a grape vine and was stung. As far as he knew, a grape "got" him. He went outside on a leash and was afraid of any buckets he saw out there (DH often uses them when gardening), though he was fine with them in the house.

I used to have a cat that was scared of coat hangers. No idea why. She was a very neurotic cat in many ways. Jasper isn't afraid of any particular items to my knowledge. He did just get a fright when a towel fell out of the cupboard, but then again I was a little freaked out too! The vacuum isn't his best friend but he will stand at a distance and watch.

Casper's big ones are fireworks and thunderstorms, as we have been reminded of a lot this past week.  Noises, not items I guess.

Cocoa, in spite of how timid she was when we got her, isn't really afraid of anything.  Or we haven't found it yet.

Both, however, aren't thrilled with the vacuum but, don't panic from it.

It may be due to Si's being a stray living in a city equipment yard with some ferals, but since the moment he walked into our home  -

vacuum cleaner - slaps/plays with the hose while your trying to vacuum

blender - trys to get on top of it while it's running

dogs approaching or barking - wants to go meet them and potentially swat their nose

our big diesel motorhome engine - never looks up from a nap

blow dryer - sits right next to me while drying my hair

strangers - seems a little leery of about 1 in 20, mostly he will walk up and let anyone give him a head scratch and talk to them

The only noticeable thing he gets spooked by is if someone is running, briskly walking on gravel towards him.  I do wonder if animal control in the city we found him in had ever possibly ran after any of those cats in an attempt to capture them.

Frank is afraid of loud noises and he hates most visitors. He doesnt like men and really hates if I have dates over. Ava on the other hand is not afraid of anything. She is the only animal I have ever had that is not bothered by the vacuum cleaner.

Our cats like to drink out of the bathroom sink, so we often leave a little water in it.  A couple of weeks ago I had been doing some cleaning and left the sponge (one of those larger, hour-glass-shaped ones) in the sink.  Flambe jumped up to drink from the sink and went vertical and horizontal to the other side of the room!

Absolutely nothing lol. Not thunder or vacuums or loud  noises of any kind. On fourth of July she watched the fireworks from the window. She isn't afraid of spray bottles or strangers, or other animals. She is fearless. Ive never seen a cat like her.

Today I realized that my Mishi is afraid of Vacuum Cleaner. As soon as I started cleaning she ran and hid under the bed until I was over with it. Lol

My cats all hate the vacuum cleaner. I have to open the windows before I use it and they rush out into the garden and sit there glaring at me. I tell them it's their own fault for scattering kitty litter everywhere.

Oh, and crows! There are some really big crows around here who hop across the garden screeching "CAAAT! CAAAAT!" at them . It would scare me too.

Fireworks don't bother them at all. There are big firework displays held on the lake near our house in the summer but the cats don't pay any attention to the noise and actually seem to be watching the colours and lights.

My Elphie is 5 years old and TERRIFIED of thunderstorms! She will meow pitifully and I will pick her up and she is actually shaking!
The other night we had a severe storm roll through and she fell asleep on my chest as I layed on my bed with the covers pulled over the both of us...
Poor baby

Bella and Thunder are afraid of  the vacuum too. They run under the bed. And I was gone for 2 days Bella wanted nothing to do with my husband. I was told Bella would lay at the end of the bed on her blanket and when my husband went to pet her she would just hiss at him.

One of our babies is afraid of strangers..She'll run and get a certain distant from the house every time someone comes over until they leave..But I think all of them might be not afraid but CONCERNED about loud thunder and crackling lightning..lol

Oh no... not the dreaded sponge monster!!

I could just see that happening.

Parker is nervous of the vacuum but sometimes I can do it around him and he won't run. His biggest fear is tin foil. He's generally a lazy, chilled cat but if you pull out the foil, he'll move faster than the speed of light.
