HI,

One of my cats Lea has been battling Stomatitus for years she has now had all of her teeth removed except one. One thing that has helped immensely is removing fish from her diet. I spoke to a different vet who said that 1/3 of cats with this condition have an allergy to fish. Three weeks after no fish her mouth was in remarkably better shape my local vet was really surprised at how much it had improved. She is now a much happier healthy cat. So all of you out there battling this horrible condition take your kitties off fish - check the contents of the food as many of them contain fish oil. Lea loves the cans of Go food Chicken Turkey and Duck with no grains.

Someone else here mentioned to me that they thought fish might be related to their cat's stomatitis.  Food additives and allergies can definitely play a role. (Of course the possible contributing factors are endless.)  While my stomatitis kitty doesn't eat fish, she does get some salmon oil as a supplement.  I guess it wouldn't hurt to leave this out of her diet for a time to see if it helps.

I'm glad to hear your kitty's stomatitis is better. Fish is an inflammatory agent for many different issues for a lot of kitties, so it's not surprising.

Thanks its a relief something has finally worked - I was giving her food with fish in it as its her favourite and sometimes getting her to eat anything was difficult. She is now off the steroid and antibiotic shots and has gained weight and is looking the best she has in years she's 10 but looks like an older cat because of this nasty condition.

You aren't going to believe this. I just saw a new vet. My Leo has stomatitis. I have been feeding him Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Granin Free Duck and Green Pea. I thought that was great. This vet juts suggested that I switch him to a grain free with Fish. I told her that I had read that fish isn't good for a cat. Sheesshhh. She said that many cats are allergic to poultry...OMG I had changed vets because I had taken Leo in for a full dental cleaning and was told his teeth and mouth were terrific 3 weeks later he stops eating, gets laryngitis (he is part Siamese) and was acting very differently. I take him in and am told he has stomatitis even all the way down the back of his throat. I just can't make myself believe that it could have comeon that suddenly. I think my vet (somehow?) missed it in the dental. I am so confused as to what to feed, what to do...I am glad I read what you wrote. If not Poultry and Fish what do I feed? Venison?

Chicken is a common allergen because it is cheap and therefore in most commercial cat foods. Fish is an inflammatory agent because it's not really a species-appropriate food despite common thinking. This is why a novel protein (like venison or duck or lamb, etc.) is recommended for any cat displaying allergic or autoimmune responses.

I had always thought Duck was not poultry. I thought it was Game. Now I have found out that the Duck in cat food is considered poultry if it was farm raised for food. It is only game if it is wild caught. Tomorrow I am getting on the phone to the folks at Natural Balance to find out which it is. I just do not know what to feed, almost all the other Grain free foods have fish and just to much stuff in it. Either that or they are always being recalled.I know Omega 3 is an anti-inflammatory but fish isn't good for cats.

The canned foods I know of that are meat, organs plus minerals and vitamins are Hound & Gatos and Tiki cat (chicken varieties) and EVO. Nature's Variety Instinct is good except it has 5% other stuff.

The By Nature 95% meats and I think the By Nature Organics canned foods are also just meat, liver and thickeners. The Organics do not contain carrageenan; the 95% meats do. As does EVO canned foods. The thickeners, especially carrageenan, can be a problem for some cats. I don't now about stomatitis, but... :dk:

Natures Variety and Evo keep getting recalled. They have also changed their food since being purchased by Proctor and Gamble. I have never heard of the other food but will look into it. When you say it is meat, what kind of meat? That appears to be key

By Nature: http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/natural-cat-food/

Hound & Gatos http://houndgatos.com/

Tiki Cat (their foods are mostly fish, but they do have two chicken varieties) http://www.petropics.com/TikiCat.htm

Nature's Variety: http://www.naturesvariety.com/Instinct/cat/can/all

The (Nature's Variety) Instinct line website: http://www.instinctpetfood.com/cats

EVO: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo

And the EVO brand website: http://www.evopet.com/products?utf8=✓&brand_name=EVO&species[]=Cat&packaging[]=Canned&specialty[]=&commit=Search

Of course, you can make your own cat food and completely control the ingredients AND the quality. Or use a pre-mix combined with meat or meat & liver. Premixes are a vitamin supplement so almost no thinking is involved, but you're still feeding a truly human grade product and you control the proteins. :)

Sorry, I was mistaken in that Proctor and Gamble does not own Natures Variety. The bought the company which includes Innova, EVO and California natural. I know it was just the dry food that was recalled. But they have been dropped from the list of top foods for Cats and Dogs. Reports I have read say they jimmied around with the ingredients. I like Natural Balance Limited ingredients Wet food. I was just shocked that this vet told me I shouldn't feed Duck, that I should feed fish.Since I started feeding Natural Balance Leo's coat looks fabulous and no more hairballs.I think sometimes vets really are not up on nutrition. Not surprising the way they all try to sell the Science Diet crap they get kick backs for pushing.

Hi Bellacat, how bad was your cat's stomatitis? My cat has had it for 6 months now and it got worse, so now we're thinking about putting her down to end her misery, but after reading about your cat having this problem for years and getting better from a diet change gives me great hope!!! I just wonder how my cat's condition is compared to your cat, so please describe what your cat's experiences were.

To answer your question, Susank, Lucy is doing quite well, but needed more than a diet change. She eats raw (chicken, rabbit and turkey) but still needs meds to keep her stomatitis under control. Thankfully, there is a clinic in Dallas that will work with cats long distance. She uses their proprietary cocktail of meds (non- steroidal) and it keeps her in remission. Even though a natural diet didn't totally cure her, I believe in feeding all my cats the most natural diet I can manage. And I'm sure that is helping Lucy.

We got a biopsy for our cat because she wasn’t responding to all the different treatments we’ve tried – it turned out that she had melanoma, so we put her down the very next day after finding out.

HI,

I now feed raw rabbit and heart mix  turkey and heart mix which is the favourite for all my cats and lamb and heart mix and sometimes Ziwipeak lamb or venison canned and dried raw which does have green lipped mussel oil in it  which is seafood but that doesn't seem to affect her. I buy the raw food in blocks its cut up into serving size amounts which I defrost and it has bone etc already ground up in it.

She is coping really well and is like a different cat but it did take a while and she will probably have long term affects from not getting enough nutrition. Previously her gums were very inflamed and red and there was pus in her mouth and she was pretty miserable - having steroid shots frequently and her coat was dull she was very skinny - she did improve a lot after we took her off fish and then when her remaining teeth came out the second time  I really can't fathom why the vet left that one tooth in the back as it caused her so much misery.

She doesn't ever gag now and her gums look normal minus the teeth her coat is shiny and she has gained weight - I think we have been lucky I also think the most natural diet possible is the best.

Hi,

She is a different cat she is on a raw diet with very occasional Ziwipeak canned food in lamb and venison which has some green lipped mussel in it but it doesn't seem to affect her I only fed her the Ziwipeak after she had been well for quite some time I feed raw minced Rabbit and heart  mostly along with turkey and lamb  luckily my cats went onto a raw diet with no problems - they were already eating grain free canned and raw is now their preference.

We have had no more problems with her gums she is still a slim cat but that is just her build - before she could hardly eat sometimes and would gag so  would have steroid shots and painkillers  once a month along with antibiotics if it wasn't responding and was quite unwell her mouth would get pus and very inflamed - when we changed her diet she improved a lot and the vet removed a tooth her had left in which was causing her problems and she came completely right after that.

We have been lucky I think - my friend whose cat also has Stomatitus changed her cats diet but has also gone to a natural vet and that has helped a lot she gives him herbs and minerals to help boost his immune system and he is also doing a lot better.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It's such a hard thing to do and you tried so hard to help him. I hope you can soon remember the happy times of having him in your life more so than the sadness of losing him.
