Hi there. I like to be prepared, and would like to have my cat start using the right kind of litter that will also be appropriate for her kittens as she is due to have hers in about 4 weeks. I have been doing a lot of research online and can't seem to get a straight answer as to which kitty litter is the best. Just a lot of people saying unscented, low dust, non clumping, and clay litters are all bad. So I'm just curious what else is left???

What have you used that has worked well? Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

When we fostered kittens we actually started with sand and moved on to non-clumping clay from there. Some people habe used pellets, but I've not personally had any expetience with them.

I used Tidy Cat non clumping litter for the mama and kittens I was fostering. Now that they are bigger and no longer trying to tasting everything I've switched them to the Tidy Cat Breeze system I use with my other cats.

Thank you! So I hope this doesn't sound silly, but I haven't had a cat in a very long time. Since I got Lola we've just been using clumping litter...so my question is how does the non clumping work? And how often do you have to clean it?

I scooped the poop multiple times a day as there were 3 kittens plus mama and 2 boxes and then dumped the whole box once a week. Sometimes if the urine was fresh and still wet I was able to scoop it too if I was careful. It's going to depend on the number of kittens per box and how much solid food they are eating compared to nursing.  I'm assuming you will be confining her and the kittens so I'd start with one box for her and add a second box once the kittens start using the litter box.

I am currently trying paper pellets and my cat is going in it but not covering up any of her messes. *Sigh* I'm not sure if I should just wait it out to see if she'll start or if I should try a different litter. I figure as long as she's still using the box and not my floor, then maybe she doesn't hate it that bad??? lol Here's hoping...since I still have an enormous amount of paper litter.
