Would you rather live in the country or the city?

I grew up in a very small town (hated it) and have lived in cities ever since graduating high school. I'd rather not live in a huge place like NYC or Tokyo, but cities with about 5 million or less (like Boston) is good. Where I live now has only about 350,000 people - definitely wouldn't want to live in a smaller city than this!

I would rather be the only house for miles then anywhere else.  I really enjoy privacy and peace.

Country. My dream house would be an old farmhouse with a big porch and lots of gardens. And a couple of kitties running around of course. I love being outside where it's peaceful.

Ignore the fact that my grass needs to be cut really bad. This is where I live. We rent the front half of the house and get most of the upstairs (it is split into a duplex). I wish we had the whole house and owned it, I love it here.

One side of the yard.

The other side and a farmers field (not sure what they are growing).

The back part of the yard and the shed...and my neighbours dog.

Country, hands down. My nearest neighbor is a quarter of a mile away.  And the south property line is national forest.

Country!!  I need SPACE!  Not so country that it's a hike to get to any stores and what not; but I hate having to hear everyone's business and noises.  And I don't want people hearing/watching me go about my daily life.  Right now where I live is pretty good.  We've got a half acre of land; which is the minimum I'd want and we are on a well traveled but rural road.  No street lights but they plow it well because there is a school up the road a few miles.  I have neighbors; but not too many.  No one's house looks down into my backyard since we all have one story houses or they are far enough apart.  We have plenty of farm land right around us as well.  Love it!

Another country gal. Grew up there and live there now. Love listening to the birds in the morning.

I live on a resort island with 15,000 yearly residents, so we consider ourselves small but not country. I've lived in both country and big city, and I kinda like my in-between here.

I am becoming accustomed to the peace of living on the family land in the country. They are a few distant neighbors, but they keep mostly to themselves, unless there is am emergency, then we could look to any of them for help, as they could us. We have to wrangle the neighbor's goat occasionally and call them to come get her, but she is a fairly docile creature, and he just grabs a horn like a leash and guides her home.

We are considering getting some goats,, too. MIL wants to learn to make cheese.

The nearest store is 6 miles away, so we make lists or dh takes the motorcycle and picks up a few things to save gas. We compost, recycle, and have a large garden. All pesticide free. Fluffy patrols the garden to keep the moles and squirrels out.

Potatoes are already coming up, and they are delicious. I can't wait for the cucumbers, yum!  We have several types of squash, onions, and some other stuff. We are hoping the nearby blackberry patch will eventually come back to what it was, and the fruit trees in the yard bear fruit this year. She also keeps a complete herb garden.

A few years ago, a man came by during a bathroom remodel, and asked them to sell him the land. He got a polite but firm, no. The man saw the old toilet sitting by the propane tank, declared all of them to be white trash, redneck, hillbillies. The old toilet has been sitting there ever since, and in honor of fil, who passed away many years ago, she plants a few cukes in it every year.

My dd teases me about us all being old hippies. She loves it out here, though.

I never though I would grow to love the serenity of Good Hope Farm.

That sounds lovely!
I would love the serenity of being out in the country where I could have a huge garden and the cats a huge enclosure. Maybe one day.

There are only 11,000 people in my whole county. The population density is 1.8 persons per square mile. That is about 15,000,000 square feet per person.

I love looking at pictures of the country. But when it comes down to where I live, definitely the big city!  I live nearly in the heart of our downtown. Lots of lights, noise and people. I live in the most densely populated area in our city.  I love it!

I think the problem is that in the country you are so isolated, and I'm afraid of the dark and while I'm not a people person, I like knowing that my neighbours are only a scream away!

Maybe it's because I live by myself, but the thought of being isolated in the middle of no where totally freaks me out.

Love urban life :) grew up in the country and it is not for me. I know I'm in the majority but the city I live in is too small. Lol. I guess Cleveland isn't big but its no NYC.

Country, country, country. Smitten, I agree with you and Catlover19, I'll take that house any day.

We have a little over 1-1/3 acres (that we're trying to convert into flowerbeds and garden so that we don't have to mow when we're old and feeble
). We're about 4 miles away from town and we live on a state-maintained, but rural road. (Actually we're pretty much centered right in the middle of two major university towns.) We're close enough that we can get pizza delivered if the need arises (don't laugh; it's only been within the last year or so that we've been able to get a pizza delivered). We have cable tv and internet. And our cell phones. We're fairly close to a mall and various stores. Grocery shopping is not a hassle. Life is good where we live. We think so. It's nice to walk into the post office and hear, "Hi Pam! How are you today?"

I don't like being right on top of other people. We get along fairly well with our neighbors and I know that if I need them, they'll be here in a flash. One neighbor knows everybody's business (I don't how she does that!) and if something is going on in the neighborhood, she'll always know what it is. There aren't a lot of kids around either (simply because all the kids grew up) and that makes it nice, too.....we don't have to deal with screaming kids, loud cars and parties and such. The neighbor down the road from us used to have a donkey; he was our alarm clock for many years, but I haven't heard him in quite a while now. Lots of people have chickens, although nobody close to us.

We also have a lot of Amish and Mennonite farms in the area, so we'll see the buggies being driven up and down the road.

I like it.

Definitely country living for me! I can't take the loudness, business, craziness of the city. I am all about peace and quiet, just like my cats. :lol3:

The city is too busy so I pick country. As long as a mass murderer doesn't come out of the woods we will be fine.
