I went to the vet for an enucleation this morning and was caught off gaurd by the fact that they were going to automatically put a prosthetic eye in the void before they sew it up. Does anyone have experience with this? the vet is going to call me before surgery but I don't like the idea of there being a foreign object in her body. If anyone has input it would be appreciated. thanks Chupie and her mom.

The prosthetic is mainly for esthetic reasons. Some people get grossed out by a cat with an empty socket.

This is Silly, 1 year after her surgery.

As you can see, the missing eye doesn't show all that much.

It is mainly a personal choice, I don't think there is any medical reason.

It didn't even occur to me to consider a prosthetic eye when Flowerbelle had her eye out. The vet didn't mention it, and I doubt very much we would have done it. Sometimes when I post pictures of Flowerbelle, people that don't know her comment that she's winking in every picture. :D

Hope all goes well with the surgery and recovery. :heart2: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Thank you so much for your support. I think at this point I opted not to do it.  I felt like I should because it's only a 50 dollar difference and they offer it but I couldn't find enough info on it. I just wonder if she bumps it or what happens in the long run if they have any research on it.

Chupies goes in for surgery in 15 minutes and I am a wreck all your kind thoughts and support have been very comforting and are helping us. We will keep you posted.......... and those little kitties you all posted are so adorable. Angel and Chupie

I would not have it done unless there was some medical benefit.  It would cost alot if it ever needed to come out too.

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for Chupies. Good decision on the prosthetic eye. I would not opt for it. I think recovery would be easier on a kitty without something foreign being implanted into the eye socket. I would also worry that it may cause a problem down the road. But, that is just me. :lol3: Hope to hear some good news soon. :cross: :vibes::vibes:

We are home!..... and though she is a bit wobbly, out of it and bummed about the Elizabethan style collar she is in suprisingly good shape. I am sad that her lines are all crooked and I will miss her beautiful natural black eyeliner but  I am ever so grateful I will not be missing her.  I am also so grateful for your support. I didn't tell too many folks in my life what was going on because the few i did were not supportive of my decision, was I supposed to put down my friend who is a  beautiful and otherwise healthy and loving creature who was in my care simply because she has a small tumor in her eye that we are not even sure of ? she has been there for me more than any human so I am glad I made the right choice and that I had your support, wisdom and communication! It made this whole process more bearable. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

ps. We will report back with before and after photos if I ever learn how to upload stuff.

ppss. my regular vet said she did this operation on 5 or 6 other animals and they all lived another 6 to 7 years on average except one poor doggie that was hit by a car.  So those are pretty good odds ; ) I'm hopeful

I have a friend working with me on a design for a kitty eyepatch (even though we know they will never tolerate one) that has a mouse skull and crossed stylized fish skeletons on it.

Hope that gives you a laugh, you need one right now.

So very happy to hear you are back home with Chupies!!! Don't worry, hun, her eye will heal up and look much better very soon - the sutures. Many on site here have been through the same with their kitties. They are beautiful, even more beautiful than ever to me. :heart3: Don't worry about those "other" people whom do not understand the whys. Actually, feel sorry for them. :lol3: They don't know what they are missing by not understanding that deep and loving connection we have with our furbabies. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for a fast recovery.
