Hello!

I was wondering of any of you feed Royal Canin dry.. specifically the Indoor Mature 27 formula.

I feed my cat 2 cans of Wellness a day (one in the morning, one in the evening).. she eats some of it but almost never finishes it..

So I also leave dry food out for her to nibble on throughout the day and night. I've been doing this with her now for almost 12 years.

However, there is a problem now because the dry food I was feeding her has been recalled.

She is still eating the Wellness wet, but I have been searching for a dry food for her that she likes.

This is what I've tried so far..

Castor & Pollux Organix (didn't like)

Halo (tried 4 different flavors.. didn't like any of them)

Natural Balance (liked at first but then lost interest.)

SO... I picked up a bag of Royal Canin Indoor Mature, and this is the only one that she seems to really like.

Any opinions on this food??

My cat is very finicky lol.

Thanks for any advice, or opinions you may have about this food.

Indoor Mature contains almost 50% carbohydrates, it has a lot of grains.

Maybe she is tired of the Wellness wet food, could you try other, new to her, wet food?  Or even wet formula of Royal Canin.

What is her weight--she is getting to the age where you need to be concerned about diabetes and thyroid issues.

Thank you! She is a small cat.. always has been. She hovers around 7 pounds, and could definitely stand to gain weight. In fact, one of the reasons I also dry food out for her is so that she gains some weight.

I've tried different brands of wet with almost always the same result - she almost never finishes the full can. She eats a little of it here and there (never all of it in one sitting.)

Vet has recommended methimizole or radioiodine  because of her thyroid level... However, before I even consider dealing with the thyroid issue, I want stability in the food she is eating.

Do you have any dry food recommendations?

Besides the high carbs and grains of the Indoor Mature, is there anything else (positive or negative) about this food that you are aware of? I obviously want to feed her an optimal food, taking into account her finickiness and the fact that she is older. She is (and always has been) a very playful and active cat.

Thanks so much.

The best dry foods IMO are Wysong's Epigen 90 and Ziwipeak's air dried raw. Both of these are high in animal protein/low in carbs.

Another thing you could try is splitting up her meals. If your schedule permits, you could feed half a can 4 times a day instead of one can twice a day. My cat is also small like yours at 7lbs, and she cannot (or will not) eat a lot at any one meal. Small meals more often work better for her.

Thanks! I will absolutely look into the Wysong Epigen 90 and the Ziwipeak.
And that's also a great idea about splitting the wet to 4 times a day.

I'd consider treating the hyperthyroid...I know in humans that letting it go untreated can create a lot of problems.

As far as dry, I fed Evo and Orijin to my old kibble head.

Thanks peaches08!!

In great news, on a whim I decided to attempt the Castor & Pollux Organix cat food again, and my finicky girl was eating it, and seemed to be really enjoying it!

The ingredients of Organix is more similar to the dry food I had been feeding her for years that just recently got recalled (California Natural Chicken & Brown Rice), so I am going to go with Organix.

Thanks again everyone for your help, advice and suggestions.. Much appreciated.

My kitty is turning 16 this July and I have been feeding her the Royal Canin Indoor Mature 27 for the past year or so. I want to keep her weight from dropping, and she has been eating it, so I haven't thought to change it. Wysong's Epigen 90, Ziwipeak's air dried raw and

Castor & Pollux Organix have all been mentioned below - I'm definitely intrigued by all of these now. I'm really trying to find the 'perfect' wet and dry food for an almost 16-year cat with hyperthyroid disease.

Regarding treating your cat's hyperthyroid - my kitty was diagnosed with this several years ago and I have had her on methimizole - which has stabilized the disease. When she first was diagnosed, I was able to put the pill in a pill pocket, but she got wise quickly and wouldn't eat it for very long. I have been getting the methimizole turned into a flavored treat by a San Francisco Bay Area pharmacy that specializes in pet Rx's and this has worked for years now. Treating hyperthyroid can be tricky at first as you have to experiment with the 'right' dose and go back to the vet every few months for a blood test to make sure the dosage isn't too low or high.
