You shouldn't have to use antiseptic on a kittens umbilical cord mom will take care of it when she bits it off herself I left it to my girl and she did just fine everything a mama cat should do.

I agree. There is no need to use antiseptic on an umbilical cord. Why are you needing to use it?

Also, you are asking questions in someone else's thread. You will get more responses if you start your own. It is also much easier for people to give you advice if you start your own thread and add to it as opposed to starting multiple threads or asking questions in other people's. There are quite a few users waiting on Queens to have kittens right now and it's difficult for other members to remember who is who. To give proper advice and avoid repetition we need to know the circumstances of each individual, and that can best be achieved by having one main thread. That way, people can look back and what has happened, what has been said, ect. So, I would encourage you (and everyone else waiting on kittens who have not already done so) to start a new thread, give us the background, and ask all your questions there.

Even then you don't need antiseptic. If Mom refuses to chew through the cords then the best way to tear them is with your bare hands. Try to tear it as far away from the kittens stomach as possible (at least 3 inches) and be sure not to pull as it can tear off and cause a lot of problems.

If you aren't comfortable using your hands you can also tie it off with dental floss. Once the blood flow has stopped you can then cut the cord with a pair of dull scissors (on the side of the floss nearest to the kitten). You never want to use sharp scissors as they won't cauterize the cord and it will bleed a ton. If, after you tear it it is bleeding then apply pressure with your fingers until it stops.

You can (and should) use iodine to clean any "tools" that you may use (like scissors) but you want to be careful not to get any products on the kittens themselves. Mom will be constantly licking them and if she ingests anything it can make her really sick. Basically, if you wouldn't put it in your mouth then don't put it anywhere near the babies!

I really want to try to help you and give the best advice that I can which is why I'm suggesting using one thread for your questions. It's not my intent to be mean and I know there is a lot of frustration in this section right now from both new and existing users alike. I think that if those who are waiting for kittens each have their own thread and keep their questions limited to that it will streamline everything and cut down on a lot of the repetition that has been going on. By all means feel free to comment on each other's threads and be involved in that way. I just think if you each have a "home base" so to speak it will make it much easier for everyone to follow and lead to better advice!

So no antiseptic necessary if you must tear umbilical cords. I have no prob doing the dirty work. Because this is her first litter i want to have all the knowledge possible to approach the situation properly! I know we're getting so close to her due date. I can just tell by her actions and i want to make sure it goes off with out a hitch. At this point im prob more stressed about it then she is but it is what it is so if anyome has.input leave iy here

Im little worried that i find dried poop and wetness around her parts...shes too big to reach and because shes a long haor domestic she gets dried messes...i usually can brush em out but a couple times ive had to cut em out. She growls at me when I do it. Its funny cuz she doesn't move though...im just patiently waiting. Any signs for you yet?

Lala, you can perhaps cut down some of the hairs down there behing, so the poo doesnt fasten there...

Onother point, if it fastens, it seems to be quite rare, or?  It is partly individual, but perhaps too rare.

Try to change food / brand?

If you get such alcohol liquid or gel for sterilizing hands, you can use it too. Just wait till it dried out.

Do NOT use scissors for clipping the umbilical cord. Blunt scissors may be ok, but NOT sharp.

Or dental floss thread is another alternative.

Easiest is to sear with your nails, like said above.

Have washed and clean hands, but you dont need to overdo it. Cat moms teeths arent sterile, you know.

A not so bad trick here in many situations, and elsewhere, is to pour saline water.  A teaspoon (3 grammes) salt per litre water. Boil up, cool down to body temp if you pour on human or cat...  Hospitals use it too.

No vocal besides purrs and small meows, dried colostrum on nipples esp when i squeeze them a little, her kittens are moving but not so wiggly more just a paw or leg pushijg to make more room. Couod they be sliding down the birth canal and be getting close or not? Any ideas on whether we're close or not?
