Is my cat peeing enough?

Hi--I am a bit worried about whether my cat is peeing enough. He's a male 6 year old cat. He seems to have one medium sized pee a day and a smaller one each day. It hasn't changed in a while, but I am starting to wonder if that is enough. He doesn't seem to be in any pain/discomfort and there are no behaviour changes. He is on almost all dry food except for a bit of wet food twice a week. I started giving him almost all wet (Iams) food last night to see what would happen.

I read somewhere that a lot of the pee you see in the litter box is actually the litter that has clumped together. If my litter isn't clumping well, would that reduce the size of the pee, even though the amount he's urinating is the same?

What is normal is very individual for the cat, so it's hard to say if he's peeing enough. Having said that, dry food can be dehydrating if the cat does not drink enough water to compensate, and most cats have a low thirst drive. If you haven't already, please go to catinfo.org to read why an all wet diet is better for cats. It's written by a DVM and has a lot of great info on cat nutrition.

My female 7 year old cat developed a urinary tract issue this past December which is when I discovered how dehydrating dry food can be. I have since switched her to an all wet/raw diet, and she now pees about 3 times a day (used to pee 1-2 times a day on dry/wet). My cat developed the urinary tract problem despite the fact that she's a good drinker, so I'm a little paranoid about dry food now.

Thanks for the response! I have done reading on the wet vs. dry food. NOt sure if I read that specific article, but I definitely got the point about wet food being better.

He actually peed a couple hours ago, which was great and it was a good size. I was able to actually watch him and he definitely had no issues--peed right away and no signs of distrsss. He does like to dig afterwards, but I'm quite sure that is just mental and not physical.

I think he's probably fine. I just got panicky last night because there was no pee in the box. HOwever, he then went right after I cleaned it. I think that just set me off; I tend to be excessively paranoid and 95% of the time it's completely unjustified.

I will definitely keep an eye on him and give him a lot more wet food. Not sure if I will do 100% wet...our other cats have always been fine on all dry...but will make it a much more significant portion of his diet.

Thank you again!
