Yesterday I stopped at our local shelter for some kitty games and cuddles because I was missing Jamie (RB) so much, and within an hour this little guy had me convinced I should drive home to get a carrier. He's 9 months old and was surrendered because he didn't get along with the other cat his family had. His name is actually spelled the German way, without a "w". He knows it, so we'll keep it.

Mogli is very sociable with humans and adventuresome. One of the women at the shelter advised me not to put him in a "safe room", but to show him where his litter box was and just let him go. Boy, did he! He spent his first few hours running up and down the stairs and picking out some toys and favorite places, including the window perch in the living room and the cat tree. He loves to cuddle and spent last night sleeping right beside my pillow. He also loves to eat, and it took him just a couple of seconds to recognize the most important cabinet in the kitchen. He purrs, trills and goes "mrrrrppp" all the time. He has DH wrapped around his little paw already. He was out on the secured balcony this morning and gave it his definite approval.

Congratulations!  I would say you saved a life (by adopting a black cat) and gave yourself a gift, too, by the sound of it.

Thanks - we're so happy he's here.

Mike, the shelters here are fortunately all no-kill and have been for decades. People in Germany are superstitious about black cats, too, so the shelters and rescues are usually full of them, especially after kitten season. Our local shelter still has some black cats "left over" from the summer of 2011, not to mention 2012, plus some surrenders like Mogli.

I've always had a real soft spot for black cats, since we had one when I was a kid. They look like little panthers. This one is certainly a little gift.

He's taken over the lower bed on the cat tree. Jamie always preferred the upper one, but Mogli seems a little unsure about climbing up that high and then jumping several feet to the couch to get down. He's been up there a couple of times to check it out, but only stays in it for a minute or two.

He looks like he owns the place

He's hard to photograph, because he only shows up against a light background, and any time I use the flash he closes his eyes. All of the pictures I've taken over the past two days have been horrible. maybe it'll be sunny next week and I'll get some good ones.

Mogli is still being a little "piggy". He snatched a sandwich from DH last night, ran behind the sofa and devoured it. He loves "people food", so I'm beginning to think that's what he got in his first home and the reason he has digestive problems. Now that he's been here a couple of days he doesn't feel like he has to eat a whole can in under a minute, so we're making some progress. I gave him some pumpkin today, and he dipped his paw in it and licked it off. It was really cute. He doesn't eat his canned food that way.

He plays for hours, and is pretty good at destroying toys. He was alone for one hour yesterday, and managed to rip the fur off his big toy mouse and then chew the plastic body into little pieces. He was brave last night and climbed up to the top of his tree. It took him a minute or so to decide to jump down, but he managed it.

In time you'll figure out what works best taking pictures of a black cat. I had so many people tell me, after I rescued Queen Eva, that I'd never get good pictures of her. They were all wrong. I have hundreds of good pictures of her. Avoid the flash whenever possible. The true colors in black fur show up better without it. You can always brighten the picture later.

He's a beautiful boy. :heart3:

PS sorry my first post called Jamie a she. I didn't notice the typo at the time I made the post.

Thank you, and that's a great tip about not using the flash. I managed to get a few decent shots of Mogli today - I'm a rotten photographer, which doesn't help. He was really enjoying the afternoon sun:
