Cat throwing up

My cat Chloe (8yrs, good health) started throwing up white foam (tablespoon amount) yesterday. I thought it was just a hairball, but no hairball, and she continued throwing up about a dozen times through the night.  We took her to emergency Vet at 7am, and they checked her all over, did complete bloodwork, said she looked okay. Vet thought she might have ingested something bad, and it was working through her. Vet gave her a shot to settle her stomach, and a shot of "Fluid" (chloe has like a camel hump now) because Vet thought she was dehydrated (bloodwork showed her Potasseum very low, probably from vomiting). Said to withhold food and water for 12 hours then start on bland diet. Chloe was all worked up about going to the Vet - VERY stressed - howling in the car. She is now alert and awake, just very quiet, not moving much and sitting in her comfy spot. No vomit since the shot.

Does what the Vet did make good sense to anyone/everyone? Should I take her to our family vet next week, or just let this ride out? THANKS for any help -- as you can probably tell, she is our "Baby".

I would take her to the vet ASAP if her condition does not improve.

The white froth is excess saliva which I think is totally normal for a feline vomit, but vomiting all night long is not normal.  Maybe she has a hairball she cant quite get out - they will salivate to make themselves vomit and maybe that is what she is trying to do.  Is she stressed by any chance? I have one that "stress-vomits" (he has anxiety issues) but he vomits on purpose when he is upset.

At any rate, I'd take her to the vet if there's no (rapid) improvement.  You don't want something to be seriously wrong and worsen by waiting.

UpDate -- Chloe ate about a teaspoon of boiled shredded chicken last night. So far today she seems reluctant to eat or drink anything. But so far, the vomiting has stopped. She still seems sluggish though. Perhaps she is still fighting off whatever this is. I believe if it continues like this today, I will take her to the Vet again tomorrow. I don't want to be "Over-protective", and not give her time to get well, but I am concerned. She is not herself.

Ys, if she has only eaten 1 teas. of shedded chicken in the past 12 hours or so, something is still not right.  Since your last post, has she eaten again?

Have you tried adding some white rice to the mix?  I don't normally advocate grains, but for a bland diet, white rice is the ticket.  You can boil the rice in the water you used to poach the chicken.  Did you cook the chicken without any spices? You definitely don't want to add any onions or garlic or things like that.  Just plain is good.  You should just poach a breast in water, then while that's cooling, use that water to boil the rice in.  If you use a bone-in breast, be sure to remove it from the bone (cooked bones are a no-no!)  I'm probably being redundant as I'm hoping the ER Vet gave you these instructions, but better to have them twice than not at all.

for Chloe.  I think we ALL think of our furkids as our babies
, and worry ourselves sick when something is wrong with them
.   The good news is...at least she has stopped throwing up, right?  But she has GOT to eat or you could be facing more issues down the road.

Keep us posted

God bless you for those who respond -- I am so very worried about Chloe. She still vomits once a day or so, the same white, foamy tablespoon amount. I have taken her to the Vet twice and the Vet ER once. 3 different Docs could find nothing major. BUT... Yesterday she vomited, and I noticed she had not had a BM in a week. I called the Vet, they had done xrays that showed nothing bad, just that there was a lot of stool in her, but she was not impacted, and he saw no obstruction. So yesterday the vet  gave her an enema, and a shot of reglan. When she got home, she had some loose wet stools that had a small amount of red blood in them. She did eat though, a quarter of a can of food, which I mixed with a lot of water for hydration. The Vet says to give her afew days to see how she comes around, but I am so worried. Right nowshe is resting comfortably in her bed, no vomit, no bms. Any words of encouragement, advice, comfort would be greatly appreciated.Chloe is sick and I am a nervous wreck!!!!!Am I hovering over her a little too much? Should I just giver her time and some space like the Vet said??

So sorry about Chloe.

I would watch Chloe carefully, like you're doing.  Don't hover, that can stress cats out.  So can being sick, so as long as she is resting comfortably, I wouldn't worry too too much.

Give/offer her small amounts of food.  Chicken + rice, or even plain baby food (no spices [garlic seems common], no cornstarch/lemon] is also good.

I wonder why she got constipated--what are you feeding her?

Thank you for you response!! We usually gave her a lot of kibble (cat chow), with canned wet food now and then. The vet says to keep her on canned moist food now, which we are doing. She was SOOO freaked out at the Vet's yesterday, with the enema and such. She is just sitting quietly now in her bed. She ate some canned food last night.  Chloe is the child we never had, and she is everythig to us. The Vet says give her some time, but it is so hard, we feel like we should be doingsomething, but, as I said, we;ve taken her to Vet twice and The ER, all in the last 6 days. pills, shots, xrays, enema...should we just let her rest???   Thank you, you have no idea what communicating with folks about this has helped us so much!! Bless you!

I know how you feel; Ritz is my child.  And its clear that you care about and love Chloe very much.

Yes, let Chloe rest.  She's been through a lot, she just needs to 'chill'.

Think of it this way:  would you want to run a marathon the afternoon/day after a colonoscopy?

PS:  we like pictures..... :)

Chloes dad, I think you will find a lot of support here. Being a worrier myself, I can emphathize with you. It's so hard when our furbabies are sick, but they can't tell you what's wrong.

Anyway, I would look at Chloe's diet. Wet is much better than dry for a lot of reasons, and a lot of us on this site feed raw. If you want to learn more go to catinfo.org for some great information.

For Chloe, and you as well dad.  I don't have any advice, but I can definitely relate to the fear / worry  you feel when your baby isn't quite herself.  Swanie throws up foamy white stuff occasionally, but not to the extent Chloe has been.  Vet told us that if it is ever green, go right to the eVet. Keep us posted, people on here really do care.

It's definitely hard not to hover when our furbabies are sick, but it's natural for them to want to be alone when they don't fell well
.  It's their way of protecting themselves since they are in a weakened state.

Anyway, the only thing you really need to do is try to make sure she continues to eat something...anything really, just make sure she gets some nourishment.  chicken and rice is good, even low sodium deli meats would be ok if it comes down to it.  You could even see if she'll eat whatever you're having for dinner (before you cook it, that is
), meaning, if you're having chicken, cut off a little bit and see if she'll eat a little piece.  Same with any meat you might be having.  If you're a vegetarian, then forget that last statement

When my Sven wasn't feeling well, I got so desperate that I fed him Temptation Naturals
.  I probably should have bought stock in that company!  But it was the only thing he would eat sometimes, so that's what he got, and lots of them
(He was dying of kidney disease, so I pampered him, my sweet angel
)

that Chloe gets back to her old self sooner than later

Thanks to everyone for their responses! Chloe actually ate a half can of food last night ande kept it down. And this morning, she is up and walking around the house a bit, kinda gingerly, but she is up and moving. She has not had a BM yet, but as the Vet told me, just have food, water and the litter close by -- SHE will know when to use them.  She still has a long way to go to get back, but at least now, she is trending in the right direction. We are giving her space, but ever watchful.

Thanks to every kind heart here who has responded. When a person is scared about something like this, it is wonderful to hear from folks who know, and care.

Bless you!!!!

BTW, my picture is Chloe getting in trouble while my better half was trying to get the Thanksgiving table ready...

HI All,

Just an FYI -- Chloe is doing very well. She is eating, playing and BMing normal. The Vet (and everyone else) was right -- just let her have food and water and her litter pan nearby, she will know when to use them all.  It is amazing to me how cats seem to know (in most cases) what is the best thing for themselves!

Thanks to everyone for their good thoughts!!!
