I am at the end of my rope here. We bought a beautiful 8 year old cat from a rescue. They told us he was great health wise. We have had him for a few months. It was weeks after we got him he started puking.I took him to our vet and they said it was worms. We did his treatments, but his sickness never stoped. I thought it was allaegies he is now grain free on a chicken/turkey diet. We played with all kinds of meets this is what he keeps down best. He eats N.V. cans and dry. He keps the dry down best. We have taken him to a new vet just last month. We had blood work done and x rays. He got a clean bill of health. But he keeps getting sick. Its to the point that we cant even get him to keep wet food down at all. Idont know what to do next. He loves to eat and still plays great. He doesnt act sick at all. Taking him to a third vet to get the same answer isnt in the budget. Has anyone eles had a cat like this? What can be done?

It's possible she has IBD (irritable bowel disease) that sometimes causes vomiting vs diarrhea.  It's just weird that he keeps dry down, but not wet, but your're not the first to say that, oddly.

Anyway, you say you are feedng NV..is that Instinct, or which one?  I would say this is definitely food related, as I'm sure you have deduced.  Have you ever thought about feeding raw?  That way you can know exactly what you are feeding, and can feed only one pure protein at a time (ie chicken, turkey, rabbit, etc.) We could help you to make sure it is nutritionally balanced.  NV even makes a raw food!  Most natural food stores sell it, at least in the USA.  (although it may not be a single protein...I think they may include some fruits and vegies in their raw food...can't recall)

In case you want to read up on IBD, here is a website that has lots of helpful information about it: http://www.ibdkitties.net/LivingwithIBD.html

Thank you so much for your help. We use instinct. It has gotten to the point evey time I give him wet food it comes right back. Some days he cant even keep it down an hour. I have looked in to raw. I got a small sample from a local pet store. I never thought of making it myself. Is it hard? What about the cost of making your own vs. Buying? We are on a veyr fixed budget. I stared the NV becouse I thought it was a great food he was on One Beyond dry but he didnt keep it down well. I will read the link. Thank you again for the help.

I also think he has IBD and I cannot believe that your vets are so blind about this! This is serious business and if you can, call the vet back and tell them you WANT an anti-emetic like Cerenia to help with the nausea and to help him stop puking. This is dangerous business and those vets are being so ambivalent about this. Soon he's going to start losing weight and stop eating altogether and then he can develop fatty liver disease. This is outrageous to me that they aren't even entertaining this at all! Blood work can all look fine with IBD and it's not until specialized blood work, an ultrasound or even a biopsy that you can get a definite diagnosis but biopsies are usually for when things have progressed very far into the condition. Vets usually prescribe something to get them to stop the vomiting because as I said it's not good to keep doing this and I can see you already know this. At least you're still trying to find help. If the vet won't give you Cerenia, ask him if you can at least give your kitty Pepcid A/C, 1/4 of a 10 mg tablet once to twice daily 30 minutes before a meal to settle the nausea going on. ugh. I'm so sorry they aren't helping you and your sweet kitty. This isn't right.

Raw feeding is NOT hard, and yes, you can make your own.  You just have to know how to balance it nutritionally by adding the correct amount of organs (think liver) and calcium if you don't feed ... say, chicken wings (bone-in).  We have a Raw Forum.  It's here:  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-feeding-for-cats

Additionally, here is a link to our Raw Feeding Resource Thread, which may seem overwhelming at first, but just take it slow and easy, and ask questions as they arise...we all have
http://www.thecatsite.com/t/240809/raw-feeding-resource-thread.

With the Raw Forum there are threads on the costs differences of feeding raw vs canned, how to supplement, where to buy your meats and supplements, how much to use, how to get your furkids to eat raw, even what kind of freezer containers to use
.

Also, finnlacey (who posted above) is a marvelous resource for IBD, as you may have already discovered!  Take advantage of that knowledge

Cats sometimes don't know what is good for them
.  Mine STILL give me trouble some days when I feed them raw, and they've been eating it now for a year TODAY
.

But, since Paws tolerate kibble still, you could try crushing up just one or two pieces and sprinkle or over the raw to make it more enticing for him.  That's how many of us get our furkids to start eating raw in the first place, and how many of us keep them eating it
.  (we don't use kibble, but we DO use toppers.  Since Paws has digestive issues, don't know if you want to use the traditional toppers or not, but most of us use 100% pure dehydrated single proteins like Wholelife chicken, turkey, salmon, cod, venison, lamb, etc..  Purebites is another brand, and there are others...there are just the two I   use)

Oh, and you might check with finnlacey about using a digestive enzymes with suspected IBD.   Most of us new raw feeders started out using digestive enzymes, but something in the back of my mind is telling me that with IBD you have to be careful with those.  Sorry, can't remember and can't find that post where it was under discussion.

Also, are you giving him a daily probiotic?  That might be helpful, and shouldn't be a problem even if he does have IBD, at least not according to some thread I just read on the subject
.  Several of us give our cats the same probiotics that we take ourselves.  I just open up one capsule per cat and mix it into their ground raw mixture.

Digestive enzymes should be fine as long as he doesn't have pancreatitis. Then you really need to check with your vet about that as sometimes the pancreas consumes "too much" and this can lead to big problems. And yes, probiotics should be fine as well. Good call on both Mrs. Green Jeans!
