A family brought in a 7 month old who gave birth to seven kittens Feb.17th. Two of the kittens died on day four. Mom has severe mastitis, the vet has put her on meds.

Her milk supply is quite low as she has been feeling sick and not eating.

I just brought them home. I believe she was bred twice as two of the kittens look premature. One little black boy for sure. The ones that died were prob also premature.

The black boy's weight yesterday was  only 87g!! (3oz) The heaviest kitten was 133g(4.6).

Momma has been getting warm compresses several times a day. We are supplementing the kittens every 3-4 hours.

Is there anything else I can do for her mastitis. She is staying in the box with them and I have them in a warm room but should I use my pet safe heating pad to give them the extra warmth...

I feel so bad for them all. This is a classic story that proves how young kittens can be bred. The family ended up bringing the dad into the shelter as well and surrendering.

87 grams isnt so bad.  I have heard of 57 who did survive, with lotsa extra care of course, but NOT hospital-care.   I mean, if he has no other problems, or is very long, he should have a good chance, the weigh is smallish but not necessarily big problem by itself.  I mean, watch out and work extra, as the bells sounds alarm here. But no reason for despair or giving up.

Extra warmth? Difficult to say. TOO warmth is almost as dangerous as not enough warmt.

Good luck!

Yes, he seems to doing okay. He doesn`t have alot of fur on his underbelly and paws. He is taking supplements well though. Momma is pretty attentive and I do have the room warm, so I will maybe forget the heat pad. There are two black boys, a grey tabby boy, and two black brown tabbies, one boy, one girl.

There seems to be conflicting advice but is there any harm in the kittens nursing on the affected nipple if mom allows..

Im not expert on mastitis.  My guess as now is, it may be good if they nurse a little. So they milk doesnt stop in there...

Contact your vet, as Im sure a vet has looked at this mastitis.

Try also to google, if it is not too late for you at your place... Here is it late now.

Good luck!

Momma is on clavaseptin and this is only day 2. She has a large mass with bruising. Some of the skin looks like it's seeping, another part looks really dark. She's eating but not too much. I have to put the food right in with her as she doesn't like to leave the kittens.

For cats I do not know; but for humans it is recommended to help move the infection or plug out.  Check with your vet if you haven't already because it may be different for cats.  Also with the skin looking so irritated I don't know if that would change their advice.
