I honestly don't know; it should be pretty hassle-free and simple.  In our family, this is not a gender-specific task; if the litterbox needs cleaning, someone will clean it!  It's so simple.  A scoop, a plastic bag in a rubbish bin (wastebasket or trash container), and it's practically done, isn't it???

Honestly I don't see a problem. If it's because the scooper gets soiled when he's doing it his way, just tell him to clean the scooper when he's done. Maybe if he has to deal with cleaning the scooper every time, he'll learn how NOT to get it soiled faster.

 Tabbymommy,

Sit down with your significant other and ask him if he really likes cats. My wife and I have four cats....one can NEVER own one cat, if you know what I mean. I've was raised with cats, most breeds, but I still love an adopted American Shorthair. When I met my second wife she asked me right away, "Do you like animals"? Score 1 for me on the first date.

If your BF is really serious in answering that question...read his body language and look into his eyes. Observe his interaction with your cat. Anytime your cat comes to him does he pick him/her up? Does he hold the cat close to him? If he reacts the same way you do then ask him what the problem is with cleaning the litter box. Remind him that if you had a dog he would have to get dressed for the weather, grab the leash and poopie bag and disposable gloves, then put on the harness......always use a harness with any animal. Does the 'Boston Strangler' remind you of anything? Then he'd miss part of the Superbowl.

Having a child works the same way. Both of you take turns changing diapers. Well, scooping out the litter box is so much easier. If he can't put up with the odor then tell him to breath through his mouth. make sure you use a good litter. We use Fresh Step...strain the poop and flush it in the toilet. the clumped urine can go into the bathroom trashcan and empty when needed. If he wants to try the ultimate kitty waste problem have him buy a toilet system if you have a young cat.

If one loves an animal enough then they will put up with the unpleasantries of elimination. Maybe you can talk your BF to buy a horse !!

Speakhandsforme,

Cat owners are, unfortunately, chained to the litter box, especially if you have an indoor feline. I'm retired and my wife enjoy our four bundles of weirdness. Our two boys are constantly on autopilot while the girls remain aloof and are much too involved with themselves to be bothered with their 'brothers' whizzing about, bouncing off the walls, unrollong the paper towels and toilet, etc. After all, they're ladies and must maintain a demure air. however, they to go bonzo after a treat of catnip!

Being retired gives me the opportunity to clean the litterbox immediately after any cat uses it. Cats are fussy and love a clean litterbox. All of our cats are spayed and neutered. During the warm months they have the freedom of the property. Though they never been 'trained' they stay on the property. we have a half acre parcel with tree lined borders and stone walls. The warmer times very seldom find us cleaning the litterbox. Where ever the cats go to do their thing we've never found evidence. But my wife's flower garden always explodes with beautiful bossoms and foliage!

No matter if your cats are totally indoor munchcins or seasonal outdoor predators, ALWAYS take the time to give them a clean litter box.......how many times do you flush the toilet after using it???

It has gotten better since I was on here last and turns out she was pregnant. So I know what you mean Bejue we are keeping her baby. We didn't know she was and the first thing out of his mouth was I wanna keep it. It looks nothing like mom but is so adorable. It likes the blankets. And both mom and kitten are fine. Yes she did only have one. I think it was her first pregnancy. No she ain't acting strange and she is the same lover she was when we got her. I called a vet and they said if she has a soft belly and is acting normal then leave them alone so mom and baby can bond.

I'm thinking two thoughts..

My initial thought was..   I'd just go ahead and do the scooping myself, not allow him to do it.  The second thought I had was.. Maybe he's intentionally doing it wrong repeatedly, so you'll have to do it.

If he is doing it wrong, than just clean the box yourself. There. Done. Problem solved.

And, yes, I said CLEAN the box. Why you are just expecting him to cover the poop with litter is beyond me. It should be removed and not left in the box.

Sheesh! It's nonsense like this that makes me glad I'm not in a relationship. I can't deal with the arguing about who/when/where/how/why that gets in the way of things getting done that need to get done.

Hey! I'm a dude, the primary caretaker of my cat, and I clean the litterbox at least once a day. Your husband/boyfriend should know that you can still be manly and care for a cat...I see cats as tiny versions of tigers, and it's an awesome thing to have such a magnificent creature as a friend.

And if it helps motivate him, I've found that cleaning the litterbox 1-2 times a day ensures there are no "accidents".

Cat-centered household, cat as a supreme meaning of life. Spending a lot of time time with cat, catering to his needs and whims, then cleaning a litter box becomes a minor, usual thing (if cat has no routine diarrhea). Litter Lock II helped us too.

Hahahaha. I'm sorry this is too funny.

Don't smear the poop around - it's a nasty habit to get into and people may look at you funny.

Make a video of yourself doing it, with instructions during the scooping procedure.  Then watch it on movie night with popcorn

Wow and just to let everybody know the litter problem has been better cause tabby has been having buddy ( her baby) do all the covering and we (as in me my bf tabbyand buddy)are not confined to a single room anymore so we dont really have a problem anymore with litter. I have had to still yell at him about not cleaning the litterbox on his days so I gave up and on a rare occasion he does it like when I was at my moms for 2 months to help with my new baby sister who is now almost 4 mnths and about 14lbs She was born 10lbs 11 oz 20.5 inches long

Thanking you for being intelligent, loving, and caring -- your child/ren will grow up the best way possible, knowing the unconditional loyalty, love, beauty, playfulness, and friendliness of cats, and also hopefully learning kindness, gentleness, and personal responsibility for their safety and wellbeing as they grow together.

I agree this Is so funny. I went out of the country for two weeks in March and my boyfriend stayed taking care of the two babies Foley and Maia. We talked every day and I reminded him of litter box duty. He said he was doing it everyday and honestly I don't remember but when I came back I think I found a way overdue litter in the box. He did clean it but didn't put new one lol

Yep dude here too! I am the only cleaner of the litter boxes. We have 11 cats now and I found all but three so it is only fair that I take care of them. Guys are mostly lazy though think cats aren't manly. We are expecting our first child and the doctor just assumed I didn't do litter and made sure to lecture me on it.... I found it pretty funny. When my wife and I were dating, I would scoop her cat boxes on my way into her apartment haha. She has me trained nicely!
