My younger bro is getting married and he and his fiance want a dog. He's never had one as we were a cat household growing up. Fiance has mild cat allergies... So they are thinking dog. I have some veterinary experience and gave them my two bits based on limited experience. I'm a cat person.

They both work fulltime so anything with separation issues might be a problem, but they can and will certainly be able to afford a dog walker and basic training. They don't want anything that is difficult to train or needs an expert hand to train to behave well in public. they live in a urban area in a condo.

My recommends were:

standard poodle, doodle or other poodle mix, brown or red

airdale or wheaten terrier

shitzu

greyhound, italian greyhound

corgi

french bulldog

boston terrier

Anything else they should think about?

An adult dog with a compatible personality. Breed doesn't matter much when you're choosing by established personality. Puppies are always a gamble as to how they'll turn out, plus they're amazingly time-consuming and thoroughly insane for at least the first year :tongue2:. Potty-training a puppy is very hard when you work full-time. And if you've never lived with a dog ever, jumping right into raising a puppy is like learning to swim by jumping in the deep end :lol3:. You might learn real fast or you just might drown!

So. . .rescue group with foster homes, private adoption, sometimes good breeders will have retired show dogs, that kind of thing. I don't recommend getting a dog out of a high-kill pound for first-time owners (sadly), because the dog is unlikely to be displaying his/her true personality in a high-stress environment, and the shelter workers won't have a clue. And not an unsocialized "kennel dog" from a crummy breeder. But a nice family pet whose owners have met with an unfortunate turn of events, that usually works out very well for everyone :D.

not an airdale i would never tell a first time owner to get one

also pug

better to stay small for a first time owner to be honest

poodles like a lot of training and exercise they are the smartest breed or at least one of them i would avoid them if they are just learning the ropes

to be honest the best dog for a first time dog is a mixed breed from a shelter where you already know its personality
