Hester had her check-up the other day, and the vet said, "She's looking really good for an old cat."  I thought... What?  Old?!  She's only 7!  The vet said they mostly see much younger cats and they actually don't see a whole lot of cats that age in there.

What's going on there?  Do people stop taking their cats to the vet after they're kittens, or is the mortality rate really that high?  Are that many people dumping their cats when they grow up?  Maybe a combination of those factors?  Pretty depressing.  I look at Hester and I think there's a lot of life left ahead of her.   She's far from old!

I agree that 7 isn't old at all.  How strange.

I agree! 7 isn't old at all. I'm curious now also if people don't take their cats in regularly for checkups after a certain age.  I don't mean the community here at this forum obviously, as the majority that belong here are very good kitty parents.  But pet owners in general.  I guess if I think about it, my two sisters probably didn't do much for their cats unless they were seriously ill.  Which really is sad in retrospect now that I own two myself (I didn't back when they had theirs).
