I don't know about that.  I have 3 litter boxes in the house and Sadie aka Satan has pooped on the floor and looks right at me when she's doing it.  And it's that look in her eyes that makes me wonder--

Hey someone has experienced my issue! :)

I'm not ruling out that it WASN'T out of vengeful emotion. I'm simply (humorously) stating that it appears that that was Charles' motive. But you can't say kittens don't have vengeful instincts. Every animal in the animal hierarchy feels and acts upon basic emotions, especially I instintful. Not trying to argue, it was supposed to be humorous, not literal. :)

I'd have a litter box in my bedroom - and probably a couple more around, actually, until he was older and fully healed up. :)

We lived in a house with 7 cats, and had 14 litterboxes. But little/younger kitties (typically) need better access. Just like little children learning to use a toilet, smaller kittens sometimes don't pay attention to the fact that they have to go to the bathroom until it's too late. And Charlie, especially, because he's "used" to have poop leaking out of his bottom. :(

I assume you're praising the heck out of him when he uses the box? The positive reinforcement will help. You might also consider purchasing the Dr. Elsey Kitten Attract litter: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754846

That's called anthropomorphism. Putting human emotions on non-human animals.

We'll just have to agree to disagree that vengeance is a human emotion.

That look in her eyes is "Daddy/Mommy, there's something not right in my world."

I second this. He needs to be retrained to properly use the box. He might be associating the litter box with the discomfort of having diarrhea. I know when one of my cats has urinary issues because he stops using the box. Sometimes I have to retrain him. I used to praise him and give him treats everything he used the box. Also if you see Charlie about to go I would calmly redirect him to a box. Kinda like you would when potty training a puppy. Set him up for success and you will see him using the box like he should.

I'm very guilty of anthropomorphism with Ritz and even applied it to my stuffed animals;  yeah, I know, I have a problem

Regarding litter boxes:  also might want to buy brand new ones, even lasagna or pie tins would be okay for now.  Both have very low lips so should be easy for Charlie to climb into and they are of course disposable.

What might sound strange and I just thought of it, Delilah had litter box issues at one point. I bought new boxes and still the same problem. It was a covered litterbox that solved everything oddly enough.

Oh my gosh, it's been so long since I've been able to post!

But I'm going to update you all, since TEST RESULTS ARE IN!  Literally just got off the phone with the vet.  Both tests yielded no results for us.  So Charlie does not have EPI!

So what we know right now is that Charlie has two clostridium infections and B12 deficiency.  So the vet is prescribing two antibiotics: Amoxacylin and Flaggyl?  She claims these will help fight those bacterial infections and I have her looking into getting Charlie B12 shots.  But I don't think these two results could explain why he's so small, could they?

Kelly informed me via a phone call today that Charlie did throw up for the first time in awhile this morning.  But his stool still seems to hold somewhat of a shape and he's still full of energy.

On a side note: new things with Charlie... 1) His favorite game is fetch?!  He has this pink ball he likes us to flick across the room, and he'll carry it back and drop it in our hand for us to do it again, it's too adorable! 2) He has this whole new thing with our feet... Typically in the mornings, but he'll attack our feet while we're walking around. 3) EB!!!!  You cursed me!!!!  Charlie is officially a shower kitten, every morning he jumps up on the ledge of our bath tub and walks back and forth between the curtain and the liner!  And just the past few mornings he's figured out how to get past the liner and into the tub!!  Haha I don't mind the company though!

And as for the litter boxes, we use a liner in ours, like a garbage bag so we can just toss it out since he likes to poop down the sides of the tray rather than in the middle somewhere!

Also, he's started a bad habit of using my lap top bag and couch for his stretching/scratch post.  We praise him when he uses his actual scratch post, and purchased treats, but he wants absolutely nothing to do with the treats.  Any suggestions on treats?

He may be small simply due to early malnutrition :dk:. But he should catch up eventually if that's the issue. It's great he's feeling so good! :D Has he grown at all recently?

I have to agree that it's the malnutrition and malabsorption. Once he gets the B12 injections regularly for awhile this should help him build some muscle  and put some meat on his bones.

Well we seemed to think that maybe he's grown a little larger in size (not much if any at all, but some!) and that he MAY be up to 3 lbs, which would be music to my ears!  Yeah, I figured the B12 may help him out here too.  I wonder if he'll be a full-sized cat?  I've been thinking he would end up smaller than usual as it is.

It's amazing how much progress we've seen from day 1!  I've grown up with cats on both sides of my families, both had completely different ideas on how to raise a cat, but I can compare Charlie's activity throughout the day to be quite normal for a cat I would say.  Sleeps a lot on Kelly's morning/afternoon shift and is full of energy at night with me.  He's more willing to freely roam without having to be by our side as well, and he sort of has his "teenager attitude."  When he wants to go do what he wants to do, he's fighting to get out of our arms hahaha!

A lady at work just showed me a picture of her 5 month old kitten and he has to be twice the size of Charlie...

I ended up with a litter of very undernourished kittens a few years ago. 8 ounces at 8+ weeks! 2 of that litter died :(. But the other 2 are normal-sized, healthy kitties now :D.

WOW!  Then perhaps Charlie will turn around!

Also, I just read your signature at the bottom.  I tell EVERYONE that has mentioned their cat being de-clawed what that is equivalent to on a human ever since I first learned what that does!  I have gotten at least 3 people to agree to not going through with their plans!

EDIT: Also something I had also been curious about.  Since Charlie has the coronavirus, does this mean we shouldn't/can't adopt another kitten in the future?  What about a dog?

Almost all cats have been exposed to coronavirus. Nobody really knows what makes it mutate into FIP sometimes. So as long as everyone is healthy, there shouldn't be a problem.

I doubt the same strain affects both cats and dogs, but at any rate, corona is considered a non-issue for puppies over 8 weeks old. And you really shouldn't be getting a puppy younger than that anyway! :tongue2:

So pleased Charlie is getting better.  Is Charlie getting l-lysine supplement?  I forget....

(Charlie is one of my favorite names:  my father's name and Ritz' new BFF (Charlie the Chipmunk)  I told her Arent the Fox was on the 'wrong side of the tracks' and accordingly off limits, but she could be friends with Charlie.)

And yes, he is only 5 months and I'm sure twice the size of little Charlie!

I have two favorite brands of treats. The first is Wellness Pure Delights Jerky. Ella, who is not food motivated, will dance around the apartment for these. But, they are very chewy so I don't think all cats like the texture. The second brand (and one I like better) is PureBites. Not only are they ridiculously cheap (like $2.99 a bag) but they are 100% freeze dried meat. And, they can be easily broken into smaller pieces. I highly, highly recommend PureBites, especially if you are going to be treating him a lot.

Also, have you tried catnip with him? You can buy catnip in spray form and spray it directly on the scratching post. If he's into the 'nip it will defiantly refocus his interest!

Charlie is on a mixture of Elm Tree Bark, Aloe Vera Juice, and Acidopholus.  And thank you!
 Hahaha too cute!!

And Willowy, great news!  I was a afraid I wouldn't have the ability to get another cat later on down the road.

And oh my gosh!  Diego looks like he's a fun guy!  He is WAY bigger than Charlie is right now!  He looks about the same size as the lady's cat from work, and he's 5 months too.  So far Charlie doesn't appear to enjoy the water touching him so he stays around the edge of the tub, however he is getting a little gutsier by peeking on past that liner!
