Hi everyone Im new here. I am so stressed all the time. My little guy has Feline Herpes.  He has little deformed legs from birth and has overcome so much. He is now 8 months old. He started as a baby with the ulcer eyes and upper respitory and was on antibiotics for months that did nothing. He gets terrible sneezing attacks which I like because his nose will unplug and he can breath again. What concerns me is the big long dried pieces of mucus that comes out of his noes. They will only come out when he has the sneezing. If he does not sneeze he gets all plugged up for days and is miserable. Anyone know of a way I can make him sneeze? This would help alot with him, I have tried everything and I usually have to wait it out. My vet said there isnt much he can do for him. Other than that the little guy is active and plays, he just gets flare ups with this nasel blockage. Thanks everyone

Welcome to the site, I am sorry a sick baby is what brought you here.

Has your vet had him put on L-lysine at all. It helps with herpes kitties. I have two herpes kitties myself and give it to them daily. As far as helping with the congestion bringing him in the bathroom and steaming it up might help loosen all that up a little. You could also squirt some pediatric saline nose drops up his nose to help him sneeze.

:vibes::vibes::vibes: for your baby to feel better soon.

Hi Thank you for your reply :)  I asked my vet about the lysene and he said he had given it to other people and never really helped so they quit carrying it. I have thought about getting some myself. I use a closet in my house and put a vaporizer in there and stand in there with him for a while, it helps and I have used the saline before, its pretty hard to get it in his noes though, he does not like that at all.

Wow. Alot for lil one.God Bless You!! Yes, humidifier in home maybe also help.Needs moist air.Animals mainly breath thru nose. Dry mucas is not good, iritating nose, causing sneeze. Much like yourself if congestied. Does vet have him on high protein diet im sure? Was he feral kitten?

You can get L-lysine in tablet form at most pharmacies, including Walmart, for a pretty reasonable price.  About 250 mg twice per day, added to soft food, should help a lot.  It doesn't seem to have any taste; cats don't usually mind it in their food at all.

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes and suggestions for my little sweeties. I will try the L Lysine and see if it helps.  These are my two little ones, just thought you might want to see who we been talking about :)

The one on the right has a visible "angel touch."  That is the few white hairs.  It was once believed that only a purely black cat could be a witch's familiar, so whenever a black kitten was born, an angel would come and touch it, making a few white hairs and spoiling it for occult duties.

Welcome to the herpes club!  Many of us here have herpes positive kitties, so you're not alone.  I buy the powdered kind of Lysine from Amazon and mix it into their wet food.  I get the Vita Cost brand.    I give 1/4 t twice daily during an active flare-up (1/4 t = 500mg) and half of that twice daily for maintenance. Lysine is not a fast-acting treatment, but it does help in the long run.  One other thing to do is gradually change them over to a grain-free food.  Wellness makes a good grain free food as well as Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, and Innova EVO.  A herpes flare-up is commonly caused by stress, so I run Feliway diffusers 24/7 in my house.  That helps keep things calm and the sneezies, watery eyes, and other symptoms down.

Hi & welcome!  I also have a herpes kitty, & yes, I "third" the L-lysine. It does help, as many on here can testify.  I also double it when he is having a flare up, as Stephanie said.

I just buy 500mg. capsules, & put 1/2 a cap in his food twice a day (250mg). Then when there's a flare up, I give a whole cap twice a day (500mg).

Hi everyone, sorry I have been gone for a while. Thanks to all of you for all the support for my little ones. It helped me a lot to know there are so many people out there that love these little guys like I do.  My little ones seem to be doing fine at the time, I am going to try all the suggestions about the L lysine.  I loved the comment about the angel touching my baby. The lord did save the one with herpes, he is on the left.  When he was a few weeks old my vet sent him home with me to die. I wasnt standing for that, his noes was so congested and he was so small he could not breath I left there crying. I came home and prayed so hard, the sun started shining on my baby in my arms and it was within 5 minutes he jumped up, unpluged and started playing and biting me. It was a miracle and I share this with everyone. My vet was amazed when he seen him for a checkup a few months later :) His little back  legs are deformed they dont bend, so when he walks he walks stiff legged. He is my sweetie, we named him baby foo tong :) And the little one on the right is Ear, because he was born missing most of his ear :)  Just wanted to share this with all my new friends.

What a wonderful story! It brought tears to my eyes. No doubt, he is meant to be w/ you.

My cat Angel was "sent" to me too. On a day I needed some TLC, he showed up out of nowhere, never having seen him before, & curled up in my lap. That was 4 yrs ago.

Thank you for sharing your miracle story with us. The first house cat we had, Betsy, had heartworms. My vet send me home, told me he had to call the vet school and to bring the cat back the next day. I cried all the way home. When I got home with the cat, I knelt beside my bed and asked the Lord to heal Betsy. The next day, the vet came out of the back room scratching his head and he said, something strange has happened here. I know what I saw yesterday, but today there is nothing wrong with your cat. So yes,I believe your story. It is a miracle. By the way, they are precious little cats, so cute. I hope the lysine helps your baby.

My Hannah, who is now 7 yrs old, spent the first week of her life in ICU at the vet's office.  They later told me they didn't think she was going to survive the first night.  She's a fighter, though, and surprised them all.  I would visit her daily and take a towel from home for her to have in her cage so it smelled of home, even though she'd only spent one night here.  They liked it when I came to visit because she would eat for me.  After bringing her home, still so very sick, she stayed in the isolation room for another 3 weeks before she was cleared to be with the other kitty we had.  I'd never dealt with illness in a kitty before and she is the reason I first came to TCS.
