I was taking my son to the orthodontist yesterday, in a town half an hour away from where we leave. DH took us and dropped us nearby, then driving my Mom to the bank for a meeting with the bank manager (a painful story in its own right, but not cat related
So, we took the kitten back home with us. When we got home, about an hour later, the kitten seemed worse. I couldn't bear the thought that she might be in pain and if she was deteriorating I didn't want to let her suffer the entire night, so off we went, me and her to my local vet.

The vet had the same diagnosis and said the kitten was not in pain, just extremely disoriented. She gave her a shot of steroids and more food and took her in for the night (which was a great relief, as I don't really have a good place for fostering a sick kitty here). I kept thinking about that poor little thing the entire night. The vets said she was most likely hit by a car, but it could have also been a kick to the head or being dropped from a the nearby building, no way of telling. What I do know is that the kitten had been lying there, in a fairly busy street,  for at least a couple of hours with one agitated boy watching over her and zero adults taking an interest.

The good news is that she made it through the night. I am going over to the vet soon to see how she's doing and what we do next. The vet already told me on the phone that the kitten appears to be blind and is not out of the woods. We may need to make a hard decision very soon. Please keep her in your thoughts - she needs all the help she can get.

Oh no! What a poor little fuzz butt! I can't believe no one did anything sooner! Worse yet, I don't know how anyone could be so cruel to harm her intentionally! You did a wonderful thing though. I hope she makes it and can adjust to bring a blind baby.

Well, I guess this was to be expected. I got her back home with me. The vet offered to keep her but not only would that keep adding to the bill, more importantly, she'll get more TLC here with me. They can't do much for her anyway, just wait and see. She got more steroids and a shot of antibiotics, just in case. I have to try and keep my own cats away, as she's quarantined for now, as far as I'm concerned. We can't be 100% sure it's trauma and there's the slight possibility of a brain infection.

I sat down with her now and combed the fleas out of her coat. I'm not even sure she's going to make it through the night, she seems to weak. She didn't even purr this time and she's very floppy, just letting you handle her like a doll :(

Thank you!

She's much better this morning but I think she still can't see and it scares her. She keeps crying unless she being cradled. She's asleep in my lap right now (typing with one hand is not very productive for my work).

Things aren't going so well. I'll be taking her to the vet in half an hour for further assessment. She seems very stressed and keeps meowing. It's like she tries to walk around and then totally panics, or maybe is in pain?

I am worried about her and also about my own cats. I think her scent all over me and her constant loud meowing are driving her crazy. Both resident cats are 15 years old and one of them had a stroke a few months ago, so this stress is probably not good for them. My strongest indication is the unfortunate fact that someone peed on one of our chairs last night. This has never happened in our household, never had any litterbox issues and this tells me someone is very very unhappy. Keeping a close eye on them to see who did it so they can go in for a vet checkup, but so far both have used the litter box today. Still, what a mess.

We'll see what the vet said, but unless she's doing bad enough to be PTS'ed,  in all likelihood I'll be forced to take her to a shelter in Tel Aviv tomorrow. :(

May it be the history does repeats itself?  Tell  this boy was a Samarian, or perhaps Palestinian. Or at least, some sort of outsider...*

As there were surely both Cohenites and Levites passing by, not to mention entirely common Israelis.  Surely hurrying to important tasks. If not in the Temple so at their 8-16 work.

Like they did in the old tale, leaving the wounded person lying unhelped on the street..

It went well for that man. He recovered with good help and Gods will, and got healthy again.

Lets hope it will also go well for this time too.

* Edit:  It dawned on my we dont need the boy to be something outsider.   He IS an outsider here, being a child, as compared to the adults scurrying on the street.  We dont even need Cohenites nor Levites, there were perhaps instead Rabbis, Priests, Imams, not even mentioning some Nunns... Also lawyers, medicine doctors, and so on, and so on...

........................

About the blindness.  With a little luck it may be something temporary. If something did strike her in the head, she may be swullen, or got some small bleeding in the head, causing pressure on the nerves.

When the swellings goes down - she  should / could recover and her sight come back.

Lets pray for it.      *vibes*

Stefan, you managed to throw me off there with the Palestinian reference
My knowledge of the New Testament if fairly limited and I had to read it twice to figure out what this was all about. I see your point now, yes, the boy by being a boy is an outside and able to notice those in need in ways others may not. Israelis pride themselves on helping on the street and not turning away, but I guess that doesn't cover cats :(

Kitty update: she's at the vet's. We decided to take the cost of extra nights/days there thus taking the pressure off our own elderly cats (one of them currently in my lap, very very pleased to have his old spot back). She may stay the weekend too, and by early next week we'll see how she's doing. It's extremely difficult to find good homes even for healthy kittens, and local shelters are swamped. She'll be euthanized as soon as she arrives if she's blind. I can't foster her here obviously. Still, the vet says she may still regain her eyesight, at which point we'll make an effort to find her a home.

Good news! The vet called me last night to let me know the kitten can see again!! She's been doing much better except for being blind and now they're pretty sure she has her eyesight back as well! All that's left to do now is find her a good home, and that's much easier with a seeing kitten than a blind one. I talked to one of our neighbors who's mentioned before how she'd love to have a kitten. Her cat died a couple of months ago and she felt ready. So, I visited her last night and talked about her adopting the kitten and she was thrilled, especially as this is a little "miracle" kitten. She's religious and it's Hannuka this week, a holiday of miracles, so she was moved by that. I told her I'll take care of spaying and getting the kitten its shots, as she's tight on the money at this point. The kitten will be just a couple of hundreds of yards away, so I'll be able to check on her and see that she's doing ok. Fingers crossed that this is indeed the happy ending and a Hannuka miracle!

What a great Christmas story. This little kitty is so blessed that you found her. I am so glad she can now see. Best of success finding her a "fur" ever home.

I too had missed this..what a lovely girl she is, and this is such a wonderful story.  What a good thing was done by that boy, and you, and to think she now will have a loving home with your neighbor..awesome.
