I have this 10 month old kitty that has won my heart. She was fed an entire wet food diet since about 6 months old. She started on canned purina one but seemed to have trouble keeping it down so we switched to fancy feast classics.I'd like to try some better food for her. Any suggestions on what to start with? I want to stay with the pâté type....I've been told it is better than chunks, shreads and slices.

Is there such a thing as "good or decent" dry food? Or should I just stick with all wet food?

How bout treats? All I've seen seem to have "meal" in them. Any suggestions?

One more thing. Mesha acts like she is starving. We give her a half can of ff classics 4 times a day which leads to over 6 oz a day. Is that enough?

Help and advice would e appreciated.

Your kitty is beautiful
.I like Evo, Merricks cowboy cookout, Nature's variety instict, Tiki cat, Wellness, Before grain 95%, Blue Buffalo ,Innova and more. FF classics are high protein and low carb so if your cat does well on it you should keep it in the rotation too. It's good to give variety. Just feed seafood flavors occasionally.  I would stick with wet food. It is much better for cats.

I think most treats have meal. I wouldn't worry about it because it's just a small amount anyway. Sometimes I give mine Vitakitty dried chicken for a treat. They also love dental Greenies chicken and Organix treats. They only get 2 a day. Six ounces of wet a day is what the average cat would eat. If her weight is good that should be fine. My cats act like they are starving all the time too.

Awe, thank you. I love her so much!

Thank for the info.

Should I just try something with her at some meal? Would it upset her tummy?

My cats eat all different brands/flavors and it doesn't bother their tummies at all. If you want to be careful you could try a little of the new food at a time. I think if you are just switching canned foods it's not a big deal.

Lots of debate about dry food both here and on the web. I believe a wet food diet is better because of the additional moisture content the cat receives. Cats are prone to dehydration and many spend their lives in a semi-dehydrated state - especially the ones on a dry food diet. This does not usually cause problems until they are older 10+. If you can afford it, keep her on a wet food diet and make sure she eats enough. Regardless of what brand, try to find one she likes that is high in protein/fat and low in carbs (<10%). This mimics the cat's natural diet. Treats are fine as long as you keep them to a minimal. Some, such as Wellness and Blue Buffalo, have much better ingredients than others. You may want to check out freeze-dried meat treats that have no fillers.

A freeze-dried treat

Here is an extensive list of commercial foods and their nutritional breakdown

and an interesting site created by a Vet with lots of good nutritional information

Bottom line is most kittens will do fine eating just about anything. As they grow older, their diet plays a more important in their health - just like people.

Mesha, not sure which Blue Buffalo food that its, but I see it has rice.  You may want to try their Wilderness line, has no grains, so will be lower carb. I think it does still have some fruits or vegetables in it, but very little.
