Hi,

I have a male, 8 week old Highland Lynx kitten.  When he was born he was a brown tabby.  Since then his entire body has turned a creamy silver (or maybe a creamy blue or silvery blue)

and is still getting lighter.  His head has gotten lighter but it still has some brown in it with the stripes and the back of his ears are still a chocolate brown.  He has some stripes left on the bottom of his legs but the older he gets the lighter they get also.  I would greatly appreciate any help with this.  I am also attaching photo's to this from birth to now (posted in that order).  Please look closely at all the pictures please.  This is my first Highland Lynx so I honestly do not know that much about them so thank you so much for any help and any type of suggestions ;)

Could be a smoke, or have a fever coat. 8 weeks is too young to be away from his mum, 12-16 weeks is the age reputable breeders let kittens go

What colour are the parents?

The mother is a blue tabby (and it's mother was a point seal), and the father is a brown spotted tabby.  Apparently both the mother and father was the oddball offspring of the litter they were born in from what I understand.  Thank you for letting me know that about the age, I did not know that.

If this is a kitten you have brought from a breeder they should be able to tell you what colour he is.  My personal feeling is he is brown tabby but has a fever coat.  Check his pads and feet - if the skin & fur there is black then he is a brown tabby.  It also looks a bit like a longhair coat in the last photo.

I actually asked the breeder about the fever coat and they said no it was not a fever coat.  They stated that when it was born it was a short haired brown tabby but sometimes kittens do change their coloring when they get older as this one is apparently doing, and they had thought of changing the coloring listing that said brown tabby.  They said to give it at least another couple of months and they would better be able to tell what the coloring was going to be.  My Vet also confirmed that kittens can and commonly do dramatically change in coloring from when they were first born even to the extent of a white kitten becoming black, something about the hair growing in.  BTW ty for the help so far.

Oh and the pads are black and kinda a metallic color and the fur between the pads and around the pads are the same color as his back (look at the last pic i posted the silvery/blue/cream color), some parts are darker and lighter than others.

I've never heard of the dramatic kind of colour change you describe.  White kittens will develop colour if they are colourpoint - the colour develops on the cooler parts first.

Black pads suggests a brown tabby.  Got a photo of them?

And btw I am not disagreeing with you because honestly I only know what people tell me, just trying to figure it out and learn something while I am at it.

Seems to me that unless the little guy is pretty sick or has been sleeping on a heater outlet, the change in color just about has to be due to the development of an undercoat or some such thing.

By the way, the 5-week picture is enough to make me want to steal him!

Blance why do you not think it is fever coat?  You are the only one to disagree with it so far.

Maybe the only way to tell is to wait until he gets his adult coat. What I think when I look at him isn't so much the fur, but that beautiful, symmetrical face. His eyes are so expressive, and those curly ears are just the cutest!

Did they really sell him at eight weeks? Poor little thing. At least he's got you to keep him safe. Was his mom unable to take care of him for some reason, maybe? Most breeders do keep kittens for longer; it's better for them, because the momcat teaches the kittens things during that time.

Agree, those colour changes are nothing I've ever seen or heard of. Coats do darken but not change to a completely different colour, or points as mentioned.

He can only be blue or brown, and he's not blue so I'm going with brown with a fever coat.

To be silver one parent has to be silver, it's not carried.

That is the oddest thing. He looks like a silver chinchilla Persian now. You need to take pictures every week to let us see how his fur develops! I have absolutely no theories about what caused it but it's sure interesting.

And I agree---those 5- and 6-week pictures are soooo cute! I want to steal him!
