Please pardon the mess! I clean and clean and can't keep ahead of the dust and dirt.

See those two "lights" in the ceiling? They're not lights; those are the sun tunnels! It is simply amazing how much light is in the kitchen, between the new window and the tunnels. Northern exposure and no indoor lights are turned on. And I can cook without having to turn on any indoor lights.

I started painting the base coat of Light Sage (Olympic) on the wall today. The fridge is not beige...it's white. These pictures were taken with my cell phone and the colors are not true. New fridge and new flooring next year....I simply do not have another penny.

The infamous Wall of Paint Samples....

We're living out of totes and I cannot find a darn thing anymore.

And the poor Dyson is definitely getting a work out.

Another sun tunnels pictures. I'm telling you the difference is just amazing.

The old window. The sun was shining the day I took this picture, but you'd never know it from in the kitchen.

New window! And look at that view! Again, the cell phone camera is not doing justice to the amount of light in the kitchen. The light is much, much, MUCH brighter! I am so amazed at the difference.

We just removed the corner cabinet to the left of the sink. All that's left is the sink cabinet and the cabinet to the right of the dishwasher. Once we take those out, the counterop wll have to go, too. And then so will the sink. At that point, I will have no sink and no dishwasher for about three weeks or so. Oy.

So that's where we're at today, this afternoon, in fact. We have a long way to go yet. We're going to start re-painting the ceiling in about 15 minutes or so.

We didn't do the installation....our contractor (who is an absolute peach!) installed the window and tunnels at the same time. He said they were really easy; the worst part was that he couldn't put them exactly where I wanted them because of the rafters in the attic. If you look closely, you'll see that the tunnel in the corner doesn't bring in the light that the one does by the window; that's because it's angled just a wee bit (using a flexible tunnel); he was trying to get it over to the southern roof. Couldn't make it that far. But that's OK. They still bring in a lot of light.

If you live in a northern climate (I'm in central PA), you'll definitely want them to be insulated in the attic. If not, they could collect condensation and that would be ugly. Ours are well insulated. Rick was more than a little nervous about cutting holes in our roof, but now that it's done and he can see the difference, he's well-pleased. The instructions say 2-3 hours for installation; it took about two hours each....the first one might have been a little more bc it was something new. Our contractor was so impressed with them that he's now thinking of putting two in his kitchen! One of his wife's biggest complaints about the kitchen is the lack of light....sound familiar?

Our contractor also took some of our old cabinets and one of the countertops; he's putting on a shop to his garage and said they'd come in handy. He really cut us a break on the construction as he took cabinets and such. That helped us a lot.

We cannot say enough about those guys; they're easy to work with and they bend over backwards to do a good job. They're probably going to be the ones to do the garage and addition for us in a couple of years. They installed our bay window in the living room and the French door in the kitchen a few years ago and we thought they did a good job. And if you have a good contractor, that's half the job right there.

Congratulations on getting a new kitchen. I love those sun tunnels. As you said, having a good contractor is everything. I am glad you are getting the work done without the stress of shoddy carpenters.

So true!

Your kitchen is looking good so far, hopefully things will continue to go smoothly.
I love those sun tunnels! What a great idea.

I love those sun tunnels - together with the new window, they make a huge difference. The sage green is really pretty, too. It's difficult to live with everything torn apart, but it'll look great when it's done.

Looks like it is coming along just great. I agree with everyone who said that they love the sun tunnels. I had never heard of them before. We have a very small kitchen, just a work kitchen, that also is dark. Maybe someday we can think about sun tunnels there too.

Really, REALLY nice, Pam.:clap::clap: Love the new window over the sink and you have a lovely view while you do dishes. :D Those sun tunnels are just amazing and the light it brings into your kitchen makes it sparkle. How exciting and can't wait to see the final pictures. :smile2:

Thanks! We're excited about everything, but getting a little exasperated at all the mess, too. We want it to be finished now.

Love the window. I can see pretty much everything in the back yard now. And that will make it really nice when people are swimming in the pool and I'm in the kitchen. I'll be able to keep an eye on it all.

After tonight, I won't have the kitchen sink/dishwasher. The kitchen will be gutted (other than the appliances) at that point. I'm keeping the stove and dishwasher. Will get a new fridge next year.

And I'm getting worried.....cabinet installation is to start next Monday. Cabinets are not here yet. I am not amused.

Muffin, OTOH, is having a ball. She went from a house where nothing much happened in her world to a house where she never knows what's going to happen next! And I have to give her credit; she takes it all in stride, bless her heart. Between putting up with the seven other cats (including a Mollipop who really doesn't like her) and all the stuff going on in the kitchen, she's doing wonderfully. She's right out in the kitchen, in the middle of all the action all the time. As soon as we pull a cabinet, she and Tabby get right in the hole and check everything out. She sits on the totes and watches every move we make. Last night, we were pulling painters tape from the wall at the ceiling by the French door and we heard her meowing, but we couldn't find her. There she was, sitting on top of the fridge, su-purr-vising.

But I think we'll all be glad when it's over. (And then comes Christmas! Muffin is going to have a field day!!!

:lol3: Muffin MUST be having the time of her life!!! I bet her personality will shine through more and more as the days go by. She will probably be disappointed when the kitchen is all back together! :lol3: My cats all love it when projects get started in the house. SO much to get into.

Hope those cabinets arrive TODAY!!! :cross:

Same here - the more torn apart things are, the better. Muffin doesn't like to miss a thing, does she?

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: that the cabinets get there in time!

So much excitement going on in your house! The kitchen is coming along beautifully --- and I'm so very happy that Muffin is adjusting to her new home. I bet she is a lot happier than being all by herself and lonely.

Keep us posted on the kitchen progress.

Cabinets are about half-way finished....still have the wall cabinets to do today, along with the wood hood and blower to the range. And the crown molding. I love the pantry; it has way more space than that old closet had. And I love the drawers for the pots and pans; now I rather wish we would have gotten more drawers instead of the doors. That's usually the way it goes, I guess. I'm so in awe of those cabinets, I'm going to be afraid to cook!

We're going to look at flooring this weekend as Rick hates looking at that old white floor. I don't know that we're actually going to buy anything, but it never hurts to look.

Next week the fabricator is coming to template for the countertops.
