5 to 10 minutes without sunscreen is all you need.  Get the rays between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.  And you don't even have to expose all of your body.  Your arms are enough.

I hate sitting in the sun even for 5 minutes.  So I get my Vit D year round through pills. I take about 5,000 iu daily during the summer, and increase to 10,000 iu daily during the fall, winter and spring.
That small amount of time is easy to get, just running in, & out of your car, While you are in the car etc... You don't really have to sit in the sun. :)

It'd be nice to get some color on my chalk white legs.
BUT, I'm a natural redhead so no tan for me sadly.

Does anyone use self-tanners? In the past I have used L'Oreal Sublime Lotion. It doesn't streak or look orange.

I don't tan.  I have vitiligo which is a loss of pigment in my skin.  I would burn too easily if I went out and stayed in the sun.

Tried a self-tanner once. It wasn't pretty...
I have used the Neutragina Micro Mist. It's great! You don't have to rub it in at all. You just evenly mist it over you. I am very fair, so I started with the lightest one,

but you couldn't really see it that much, so I started getting the Medium, & it is fine. "No Upalumpa color!"

I love It!

No, I don't think about it, evidently you could stand naked on top of the capitol building for 8 hours here and still not get enough vitamin D for the day, so I've learned to embrace my pale grayish skin, lol. I have some olive skin genes and tan easily, growing up in Texas I shunned the sun but was never this pale!

Apparently it's the same here. . .they say the sun's at the wrong angle? Or something. My mom--who's a mail carrier! Outside all day, short sleeves in the summer, no sunscreen--went to the doctor and got a vitamin D test, and it showed she was seriously deficient. In September! If the sun worked she should have had pretty high vitamin D levels that time of year. So we say the sun is broken here :lol3:. And take vitamin D supplements. Strong enough to give you a farmer's tan but not to give you vitamin D.

I use the Avon Skin So Soft Satin Glow Perfect Legs so I don't have to wear stockings in the summer and my legs won't be white.  It gives a light tan and gets a bit darker each time you use it.  It doesn't streak.

I'm definitely for it.  I know the risks of skin cancer... we are constantly reminded of it in Australia, but the sun gives me a lift.  I don't bake myself, but I love getting out on the lounge with a good book and a cool drink and just feel the rays.  For me it's a kind of therapy.

I use a non-chemical sunscreen on my nose when I'm gardening, but have bad reactions to the chemicals in the usual stuff.

I have tanned off and on throughout my life until I met my DH. He pitches a fit every time I go out to get in the pool if I don't have sunscreen on. During the summer, there is nothing I enjoy more than getting on my floaty and floating around the pool, in and out of naps for the afternoon. But, at 38, I lather on all the chemicals so I can enjoy myself.

I do want to check out some of the self-tanners mentioned in this thread though.

I have a farmer's tan more than anything this year, from working in the garden, mowing the yard, etc. My arms and legs are tanned, but I have a sock line at my feet and a t-shirt sleeve line on my upper arms. I wear gloves when I'm gardening, too, so my hands aren't really that tanned. I haven't spent a lot of time in the pool yet, so my tan isn't very even.

Once I started spending days in the pool, though, I'll tan pretty quickly.

No, skin cancer runs in my family
Nope. I'm really fair-skinned and I have only 2 shades: Gothic pale and lobster red. :lol3:
I have to agree with both of these statements! My grandpa died of skin cancer, and my dad is permanently red (even in winter) from so much sun exposure due to working outdoors his entire life.

I am pale enough I make a sheet of paper look tan. :lol3: I'd love to have just a bit of color to my skin, but alas I do not so I deal w/ it. I cannot afford to go tanning, or I would just enough to get a bit of color so I don't burn so bad in the summer. I can slather on sunblock & I burn right through it. :sigh:
