HEllo everyone:

I started Lucas on liquid prozac today. The vet changed the dose to 2mg and since the smallest pill we can get is 10mg we had to get liquid in order to give him an exact dose of 2mg and then continue to reduce the dose.  It was very expensive compared to the pills,  $55 for 2 ounces, when the pills were really cheap, $6 for 15 pills. Thank God walgreens have a discount card that costs $20 and with it I can get the liquid  prozac for a year for $9.99.

Anyway, the problem I'm having is that the liquid prozac is causing Lucas to salivate a lot and his mouth starts foaming and I hate that because he has to take the prozac everyday and I don't want him to suffer this everyday, I guess it has a bitter flavor or someting, like the benadryl.  What can  I do about this?  I was thinking of mixing the prozac with a little bit of milk, what do you all tink"?\

Please help

Thanks in advance, Tammy

Are you able to squirt it into his food (presuming he eats wet)? Or is it one where you have to have it on an empty stomach?
The idea of a liquid med sounds much easier to me, however if it has that bitter taste then it's going to be a problem. With a pill at least you can (theoretically) get it down their throats and be done with it.

whit Lucas I prefer pills, he is very good at taking them and he hates liquid medicine, but we had no choice this time. I thought about it, but I'm afraid of squirting the medicine in his food because he really needs to take the whole dose and sometimes with the food you miss part of the dose.

I guess even if you quarter the pills he's still getting too high a dose. Maybe ask your vet if 2.5mg would be too much?

He doesn't want me to do that because he says that if Lucas does better with the new dose of 2mg , he will prescribed less than that, Ï'm guessing like 1 mg and it will be impossible to break a pill in so many tiny pieces.   I don't think I have a choice but to keep giving him the liquid, I just wish he wouldn't suffer taking his meds, he has been through so much, my poor baby.

How is he now he is on the Prozac?  Sounds promising that the vet is tapering his dose.

Do you have a compounding pharmacy in your area?  They can do amazing things with medications for pets getting the exact dose needed in various forms, like meat-flavored pastes you can place on your kitties foreleg allowing him or her to lick it off or even formulations you rub inside their ears (not sure it that would work for Prozac).  I suppose if you had a compounding pharmacy, your vet would have already sent you to them for your med though.  It makes it a lot easier to dose your pets.

A lot of pharmacies have limited compounding/flavoring abilities, even if there isn't a full compounding place there (and ask around--some vets don't know about compounding yet). I think Walgreens in the maiinland U.S. can flavor liquid meds (not sure if those in PR can do the same). They may not have "pet" flavors like tuna or beef, but even if it's a "kid" flavor like bubble gum or grape it at least won't be as bitter. Ask the pharmacist what they can do for you. .. sometimes they're more helpful than the doctors ;).

He is doing wonderfully on the prozac, he was on 5mg but was too sleepy, so hopefully he will do better now on 2mg.  Here is a thread I started that shows his improvement on the prozac:

I don't think our walgreens or any of out pharmacies have those flavors, but I will find out, thanks.
