I just wanted to share my story in case it helps someone else.

I have a cat pebbles that got bit on the neck 11 day ago by a copperhead.  or at least that's what I think it was.  It could have been a pigmy rattlesnake or even a cottonmouth.  we have all three varities in our yard/area..

But I suspect a copperhead.

When she initially got bit, it bled for 24 hours out of one fang hole. One fang went deep and she was very weak and feavery.  I did not think she would make it through the night. Her little head was swollen up too.  There are no 24 hr vets in my neck of the woods so I had to rely on myself and the internet that first night..  I gave her a tiny piece of benedryl to control the swelling and a tiny tiny piece of aspirin to bring her fever down and to help with pain.  I don't know what her fever was but she was very hot in her head area that extended down her body.  I know aspiring thins the blood but I was helpless.  I made the decision and just did it and prayed.

That first night I crated her in a large dog crate and put her crate beside me and i slept on the couch hoping she would make it through the night.  She slept all night.  She did not move.  I kept checking her to make sure she was breathing.  The next morning the bleeding had stopped and there was a spot on her blanket the size of a saucer where she bled all night.

she got bit on sunday the 13th...  11 days ago.

I called the vet Monday morning on the 14th and they told me there was nothing they could do.  They said since she made it though the first night that she would live.  They could not give anti-venom because they did not know what kind of snake bit her.

So I went to the feed store and brought some amoxicillin capsules 250mg.  I got some pain control antibiotic ointment.  And I already had some Kerotolux shampoo at home.  And peroxide.  And vitamin c.

So what I have done everyday (and am still doing) I sprinkle an antibiotic pill plus one crushed 500 mg vitamin C on her canned food.  I shampoo the bite everyday.  And after each shampoo I dribble half and half water/peroxide on her wound and then put antibiotic ointment on it.  And I leave it open to the air.

The second day when she woke up, she drank and ate.  The wound at that time was yellow with  no hair.  The skin was dying.

An immense hole developed from the venom.  She had a lot of necrosis.  I scrubbed it down daily with kerotolux which is a god send soap for cats. i suggest everyonen keeping it on hand.  It's over 20.00 a bottle but it sure helped her.

it got a lot worse before it got better.  But she made it and she will be fine.  She eats and drinks like a champ and loves her neck being washed because it itches as it heals.

She has been a little trooper.

it's hard to believe she had done so well in 11 days.

I know she wants outside but I am leaving her in until she is completely healed.

So the pics are on the 14, the 19th and the 24th..  It is amazing progress....

This is the morning after she got bit.  her skin is yellow and the hair is gone.  I had no idea that venom was so destructive to the skin.

The is on the 19th...  6 days after the bite.  The skin had died but was trying to heal.   The vemon created a huge hole that you can't really see here as it's flapped over.  She never once acted like she was in pain except for that first night.  I have kept all the dead skin scrubbed off.  One of the fang marks is circled and the other is right against the red box.   the one beside the red box is the one that bled.  If you also notice, in the first picture, these same fang marks are circled.  The wound size increased as the skin died.  This wound in this pic is about a 1.5" to 2" diameter.  it was big.

And this was today after i washed it and doctored it.  it is healing very very nicely.  She is going to be okay..  it is much smaller here as the new skin grows.  probably the size of a quarter now.  It's healing fast.  Real fast.

And here she is resting right now....  She still doesn't have her energy level back up.  but it's sooooo much better than it was.  She is sleeping on my husbands box of martini glasses....  She's my petty baby girl...  and right now she can sleep where ever she wants to.

i hope one of my cats never had to go through this again.  She has been a little trooper.  She eats, drinks and does not seem to mind taking her vitamin C or her sprinkled antibiotic.  In fact, through it all, I think she knows I am helping her.  She just sits and holds her head up for me to wash her neck and doctor her.  She knows afterwards, she will get some good kitty food.....

but anyway, that's what I did for a snake bite.

Thank you for sharing the wonderful story and all the great advice.  I certainly would not know what to do about a snake bite.

I am so glad that Pebbles is doing so well and that she had you to look after her.  She is one lucky pretty little girl.  I'd let her do whatever she wanted, too!  ;-)

One thing:

Some people say vitamin c helps with a snake bite and then others say it's a myth.  I say why not..  it does aid in oxygenation of the skin and she sure needed that.  I tasted one of the vit c pills and they taste horrible.  I am really surprised she eats her food with it.  One thing about vitamin c is that you can't OD on it.  What our bodies don't use, is passed out in our urine.  I always keep it on hand.

And animals are strange little creatures.  They know what they need when they are ill and the fact that she eats it with no prompting on my part tells me she might be needing it.

She has became pretty spoiled during this ordeal.  She knows her schedule..

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Wow! That's a really scary situation, and I'm so glad Pebbles has pulled through. I wouldn"t have known where to start other than trying to get as much venom out as possible. :vibes: for a complete recovery!

This is simply Incredible!!  I would never have dreamed that a cat could survive a bite from *any* of those snakes... Amazing.

Your babe is blessed, and you obviously have some friendly spirits in your neighborhood.  Thank you for an inspiring story.

Poor Pebbles. I am amazed that she survived that venomous bite. You've given her wonderful care indeed, and she owes a lifetime of cuddles in return!

Here's a  pic from tonight....  she is nearly back to her old self in attitude, but not in appearance.  She looks dull and ragged.  That will just take time..

yummy........She loves to eat.  She looks like she is wearing a coat.  Her hair is a little dull right now.  I'm also giving her fish oil in her food for added calories and overall goodness.   In spite of eating good, she has lost a little weight through her ordeal, but she is overall doing excellent.  Her spot to eat right now is on my desk.

she is telling another cat to back off from her bowl......a little fiesty tonight.

Good to the last drop.  her head was upside down in her bowl so she could lick the sides.....   It's looking good.

I probably won't take any more pictures for another week so I can gauge the difference in her healing process.  Thank you for the kind thoughts.  Pebbles is my miracle cat.

What I wonder if her hair will grow back when the wound heals.......  I don't care if she scars as long as she heals....  but I just wonder.

Hello jcribbs, I just read your amazing story of your kitty. My cat Psymon got bit by a possible copperhead snake yesterday midnight, he is going through exactly what your cat went through right now. My husband took him to the vet yesterday morning and he was prescribed Amoxicillin and steroids but today his legs are necrotic. He is currently at the vet again and we're hoping he'll be okay. Your story has given me hope[emoji]128519[/emoji]

Christina,  I also feel like she will be okay since she made it past 24 hrs.  The necrosis is normal.  It will look worse before it gets better.  I was diligent in cleaning Pebbles neck area a couple times a day to get the dead necrosis off.  I gently used a washcloth and the soap from the vet called Kerotolux..  It is antibacterial. She loved her bite being washed because it itched.  She held her  neck up to help me.  I scrubbed the bite with the soap, put peroxide on it with a q-tip and then put the anti-pain triple antibiotic ointment on her neck and put the vit c in  her food.  I did not cover her bite.  I left it open to the air.

Most vets are not advocates of antibiotic ointment but I just disagree.  I could tell she itched as it healed and the ointment kept it moist so so the necrosis came off easier for me and the moistness made it itch less.

The steroids the vet gave you are probably for inflammation or swelling.  I don't really care for steroids, but you have to do what you think is best.  They can give some animal convulsions so I always have shied away from them.  A little vit C wouldn't hurt her.  I do feel it helped Pebbles.

Please keep me updated me on your kitty.   As far as Pebbles, she is absolutely fine.  There is no scar and all her hair grew back.  The only lasting effect on her from the snake bite is she is afraid to go outside.  She will sit on the porch with me 'sometimes', but it has made her a house cat.  She is afraid to be outdoors alone.  So I just have a house kitty now and that's okay......

I will be looking forward to your updates Christina and my thoughts will be with
Psymon  ..........Jenn

Hello Jenn, thank you for your thoughts in our cat, my husband called me and said the vet's staff were cleaning the wounds on Psymon. I was telling my husband earlier about Pebbles and we wish we had read your story sooner. I'm going to try the nursing you gave Pebbles on Psymon because he has been in a lot of pain since yesterday, he can't even sleep laying down. Jenn, thank you again for posting your story and I'm so happy Pebbles is doing fine. I'll try to post a pic of Psymon on here.

I would love to see him.......  I am praying for a speedy recovery.  I know what you are going through.  I know how hard it is.... It takes a little time for him to feel better. The venom is just horrible stuff how it can damage the skin.  Did he get bit on the legs???   How old and how big is he?

Here's a today pic of Pebbles showing her total recovery....

Here is a link to the shampoo I used if you want to read about it......

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=25266

but like I said, I bought mine at the vet.  It's for skin disorders and it's medicated.  I always keep some on hand.  You don't have to have a prescription to buy it.  You can buy it on Amazon and at numerous online pet shops.  I don't know if you have multiple vets where you live, but if one doesn't have it, another might or they might have something similar or just as good.

*Medicated shampoo removes scales, crusts, and excessive oil associated with your pet's skin disorders to improve overall skin health

*Shampoo especially effective for skin disorders characterized by excessive dryness or oiliness

*Patented spherulites encapsulate shampoo ingredients for slow release on your pet long after application

*Tar-free medicated shampoo contains salicylic acid, pyridoxine HCl, and zinc gluconate

I know Australia has some really venemous snakes much more dangerous than the viper type venemous ones that we have in the U.S.  I would think that if they survive the venom then it would be the infection from the puncture wounds.

Here is a picture of Psymon, my mom and dad told me he gets up to eat but slowly, it's a start! He was bitten on his right front leg and the vet said the venom spread to his chest and other front leg. They also said fur will not grow there again but I saw the pic of Pebbles so I'm hoping he will too. Psymon will be 2 in July, he is an average size cat, he is very active, he loves showing off the rodents he catches at the end of the day[emoji]128516[/emoji]
