I just wanted to add that I had just bought a bag a week or so ago, and my cats have been eating it since. It was part of the recall. I was able to return and exchange it for Blue Buffalo. But anyway, since starting the possibly contaminated food, my cats have been acting.. strangely. More vomiting than usual, hiding in unusual places, and lethargic. No diarrhea, fever, or anything else though. After switching to Blue they're acting a lot better.

All of the following brands have some food being recalled:

Brands included in the recall include:
  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Country Value
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Naturals
  • Premium Edge
  • Professional
  • 4Health
  • Taste of the Wild
Obviously, not all foods in these brands are being recalled, but you should check the Diamond Pet Foods web sites for batch numbers, etc.

I also want to add that my cousin has been feeding 4Health to her ferret and dogs. The ferret passed away tonight and one of the dogs is very sick. Possibly related to contaminated food. Not meant to scare anyone, just want everyone to take these recalls seriously.

This list has expanded again and now contains 12 brands, some include cat food, all are kibble formulas. The links (on the recall page, click on the brand and it will open a new link) will give you codes and dates and locations, so you can determine if the food you are feeding (if you use one of these brands) is part of the recall. If you have not saved the bag, call the company and they will instruct you on what to do.

The main issue seems to be HUMANS getting sick, but why take a chance, eh?

These are all foods that have been manufactured in one plant, in South Carolina

Brands affected, so far

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
Country Value
Diamond
Diamond Naturals
Premium Edge
Professional
4Health
Taste of the Wild
Apex
Kirkland Signature/Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain

PS for some reason Wellness is not on the list in the link, but the wellness puppy food IS part of the recall.

Wellness isn't on Diamond's list, because Diamond isn't recalling it - Wellness is voluntarily recalling it because it was manufactured at the Diamond plant.

Thanks Laurie. I just read that explanation elsewhere, too. I also heard Natural Balance had some foods manufactured at that plant but I don't see any recall info on their website. However they have a page where you can enter in the lot/date information and get their testing results:

http://bwc.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Some are making a case that the recall is because of danger to humans, and if one is feeding one's pet the recalled food, it's not that big a deal. Still though, would anyone want to continue to feed food that has been recalled by the manufacturer, regardless of reason? What people choose to do with the information is up to them, I just like it better when people are informed, you know? :)

This is the info from littlebigcat.com - it has a illustration to show what to look for on the label:

http://www.littlebigcat.com/blog/expanding-recalls-by-diamond-pet-foods/
Diamond has set up a web page  with information about affected foods, which includes the label information on SKUs and dates (see image to the right). However, Canidae, Kirkland, Natural Balance, and Wellness have initiated their own recalls, which are not currently (Saturday 5.5.12, 9:30 pm) listed on the Diamond site, or are any cat foods–even though Diamond issued a press release naming Kirkland on Friday, and despite the statement on that website that it will be updated “continually.” ...
... Cats and dogs are resistant to Salmonella and rarely get sick from it. In fact, nearly 40% of U.S. dogs and 20% of cats are already asymptomatic carriers. Of course, most pets eat commercial dry pet food. Since testing of pet food for Salmonella  is a fairly recent development, this could be how these pets were exposed. However, these bacteria are ubiquitous in the environment, and since dogs are more likely to eat all sorts of interesting things, that may be why so many more dogs carry it.  ...
Since I buy Taste of the Wild I went to their website:  http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/information/
UPDATED: CORRECT PRODUCTION CODE INFORMATION

Diamond Pet Foods, Manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, Issues Voluntary Recall of Dry Pet Food
Recall is limited to product manufactured between December 9, 2011 through April 7, 2012 and distributed to 16 states and Canada ...
... To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production code on their bag. If the code has a "2" or "3" in the 9th position AND an "X" in the 10th or 11th position, the product is affected by the recall. The best-before dates for the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013. ...
IF I have understood this information the little word "AND" is important - BOTH the Production Code AND the Best-before Dates must be present for the recalled product?

I have two bags and the production code does not contain an "X", but the dates are within the best-before date range - so ?? that means that the bags I have are not the recalled product ?? right??  :)

Here is the Diamond Recall Information:  http://diamondpetrecall.com/recall-home/

PRODUCTION CODES

If your production code has a "2" or "3" in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 10th or 11th position and your best-before date is between December 9, 2012 and April 7, 2013, your product is affected by the recall.
If the product you have does not include a "2" or "3" in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 10th or 11th position and your best-before date is not between December 9, 2012 and April 7, 2013, your product is not affected by the recall, and you can continue to feed it as usual.
The information also includes states the food was distributed to, and which ones it wasn't  -BUT, I don't think I'd rely on that information and not check the production codes because I get mine from the Internet, so it may have come to California from a state where the contaminated food was shipped.

Solid Gold added to the recall list.

Seems to me they ought to be posting this on their home product site. Not everyone uses facebook.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Solid-Gold-Health-Products-for-Pets-Inc/205937222776518

Again, like the others who are not made by Diamond, but only use the plant for certain foods, not all Solid gold foods are affected. Read the link and check your food against the information provided.

Actually, on second thought, since not everyone belongs to facebook I will post the information here

May 7, 2012
Just a few hours ago, Solid Gold received information that two batches of our foods were made at the Diamond Gaston plant around the same time period as some of the previously recalled foods of other brands. Though we have had zero complaints about these particular batches, we have decided to recall them as a precautionary measure. Due to the time difference between us and the appropriate FDA office, there was not enough time in the day to further discuss this voluntary recall with the FDA. We are announcing this now because we know our customers are concerned and didn’t want an entire night to go by without this information being available to the public. Tomorrow morning (May 8th), after speaking with the FDA, Solid Gold will officially institute a voluntary recall of two batches of food made at the Diamond Gaston facility.
The following products will be part of this voluntary precautionary recall. Only the two foods with this particular best before date and batch code will be part of the recall.
Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Food:
All sizes
Best before December 30, 2012
Batch code starting with SGL1201

Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food
All Sizes
Best before December 30, 2012
Batch code starting with SGB1201

No other Solid Gold products are affected.
We greatly apologize for any concern and inconvenience this may cause and greatly thank you for your patience. Further information will be available in the official recall tomorrow morning. As always, please contact us at 800-364-4863 or [email protected] with any questions and we will

Great... my Ferals nearly finished a bag of 4Health with a "2X" production date.

Fortunately, they seem fine, but that is still disturbing.

I have the bag with a tiny bit left...

should I take it to the store?

I would. The refund, ultimately, should come out of 4Health's pocket (or Diamond's, or the insurance company's), not the store's.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 11, 2012 - On May 4, 2012, Natural Balance Pet Foods announced a voluntary recall of certain dry pet food formulas manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods at their Gaston, South Carolina facility. Link to original press release: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm303042.htm

The original press release contained a typographical error in the Best By Date of one of the products listed. It stated a Best By Date of March 12, 2013 when it should have been March 13, 2013.

The incorrect Best By Date listed was:

5 LB Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison Dog UPC# 7-23633-88650-5
Lot Code NBH0103 Best By Date: March 12, 2013

The correct Best By Date is:

5 LB Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison Dog UPC# 7-23633-88650-5
Lot Code NBH0103 Best By Date: March 13, 2013
Complete info here:

I was reading on MSNBC today that there are now 16 humans affected by this from handling the tainted pet food.  Kinda scary folks.
