And it was not even 2 years-old!  Of course, we didn't buy the extended warranty on it, which covers up to 2 years.

I had planned to buy a new sofa, which we really need (ours is 12years-old, and is getting a bit smelly and worn). Oh well...

And this time, we paid the $67 for the extended warranty!

This is why I rather buy parts and build my own computer. That way, when parts go, I can just replace them myself without waiting for it at a shop or voiding a warranty...or buying a whole new one!

Sorry you have to wait for your new sofa :(

That happened to us too. Just over the one year mark when the warranty ran out. My husband bought the part needed and fixed it because we couldn't afford a new computer.

We thought about that, too. The motherboard died. They estimated it would cost at least $200. We got a new cpu for $400 (DH decided to buy a new monitor and speakers, which we reallt didn't need).  Sure, it was twice the cost of the estimate, but I bet that that "estimate" would end up being a lot more than $200!

I also lost all of my pics--mostly of the cats. I never think to transfer them to disc...DUMB, DUMB me!

If you know what you're looking for, you can get a mobo for under $100 most times. Yikes at $200!
If you have a few bucks to spare, you could get a portable hard drive, even a mini one and just throw your pictures on there (and anything else you want to keep safe). That way you don't have to worry about losing discs or ruining them accidentally. Its also easier than burning them. I would cry for months if I lost all my pictures now. I have about 30gb worth.

I got a lenova that has been issue from start AFTER buying and RETURNING a Dell.  I went on ebay and bought the same computer I had used for YEARS without issues.  It is over 10 years old and going strong.

Sad that they don't last eve a year or two:(

If the motherboard died, then you should be able to go to a computer shop and have them access the hard drive and put all your files and pics on a disc or flash drive.

That's what happened to ours...well it basically fried. Part of it was burnt when he took it out. My husband ended up finding a motherboard online and with shipping I think it was about $80-90. It took him about a year and a half to finally buy one and fix it, all the ones he kept finding were over $200.

In our case, the fan died, but that was on a Dell computer that was about six years old, so no complaints. I found a fan on Ebay and stuck it in. The computer still works....Rick is using it.

About three years ago, we bought a new Dell and have had no issues *knock on wood*. Well, my linksys wireless router keeps kicking out, but other than that......  No, still didn't buy a new router; still using the old one.

You didn't lose your pics, MargeCat, not if the hard drive is OK. Like Catkiki says, take it to the shop and have them transfer all your pictures onto disks. You should be OK. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, if your old computer wasn't even two years old, you could slave your old drive into the new computer; then you'd have two drives to work with....more storage is always nice. You probably have room in your computer for the old drive.
