I have a 15 year old daughter. She's a good kid, a little weird and far too mature for her age. Well, she plays Lacrosse. I love any sport so I'm totally her biggest fan. She's been at practice every day for the past month, practice is 3.5 hours every single day, and she's loving it.
She hasn't played in a few years, so it's good to see her get back into the family business of being active. She had a scrimmage last Wednesday, and then a Game on friday. She played and did pretty well, although I haven't watched girls LAX in years, just boys, so it really struck me at how NAKED they seem. The only protecting they have is eye gear, they wear these short skirts and tank tops. Ok, well, there's no body checking like the boys, so I'm guessing it's ok. Well, she comes home on Thursday last week and tells me "Mom, I got hit right in the head with the ball" then goes on to change the subject to who's doing this that and the other thing, so I figured no big deal. My kids are pretty stoic, but if they're really hurt, they tell me. Normally.
SO, she plays her game on Friday, no problem. Weekend comes and goes. At some point on Saturday morning she mentioned a headache, but she has tons of AP homework...On Monday, she comes home and tells me how she was sitting in the front row in French, and couldn't see the smartboard. (HUGE computer screen in lieu of a blackboard) I said "well, that's bad, how are you feeling otherwise"...She tells me she's had a mild headache, but now it's really pounding. Oh dear Lord.
So, we go home, I give her some Motrin, then some tylenol on top to move it along. It gets a little better and she goes to bed around 8:30. (normal-her practices are rough) Tuesday, she's holding her head-it's killing her. OY. So, off to the ER because the Pediatrician has no way to check for a concussion. Well, after almost a WEEK-she has a concussion, the doctor did an ultrasound on her EYES, to check her optic nerve for brain pressure (they don't do a CT scan after 48 hours, since she's somewhat ok, and not vomiting) there's no brain pressure, but the doctor was certain she has a concussion and has to sit out for 2 weeks from LAX.
So, he gives her what for, for not being serious about this, since she could have had so many problems. What does she say, you may ask.,,
She's MAD that she can't play, and she shouldn't have said anything. I want to bang my head on a wall. What do you do with a kid like this. Thank goodness the Dr gave ME a note to bring to the school, (She might have "lost" it) so they will force her to sit out. She did talk him into letting her do the practice sprints and insanity workout they do. (honestly) But he held fast to when the balls and sticks come out, she has to leave.
Sad thing is-she's just like her father and I. We can't even say it's not our fault. It's clearly our fault.
