I am so happy for your boy.  I have gone through this twice.

Sorry, I missed the second page of posts and didn't see he had been taken to the vet.

You will be in my prayers.

I am so relieved that he seems to be making a recovery.  As others have said, this is a real, immediate, life-threatening condition.  The ambulance would have it's blue lights flashing and sirens sounding if it was a human.

And AFAIK unfortunately cats that have blocked once are more likely to block again, so yes, if you can find out what the problem is it will help avoid it in the future, and you do need to find a way to always be able to take him to the vet as soon as you see any symptoms - fingers crossed of course that this is a one-off.  Remember that the sooner you get him to the vets, the cheaper the treatment is likely to be.

People, I appreciate the advice. But, know someone's full situation before you just throw kind lectures out there. I am not throwing stones I am just simply stating. I knew he needed to the vet. two weeks ago but neither me or my husband currently has a job. I am going to gather up all the information I need for imom and get that started. I am going to do a yard sell this weekend to get as much money as I can to go towards him. And make a jar to see if anyone wants to donate towards his care. Then, when I DO get a job....my first check is going to get the animals on insurance and get their shots utd. I have a feeling that the people that gave me Merlin didn't let me know that he needed a special diet. That's if they knew. But it is just a small feeling. Anyway, I am doing everything in my power to help Merlin. If it wasn't for Alexis, he would be dead right now. This forum was my way of trying to help Merlin. I saw no other way. Vet's around here WILL NOT work things out with you if you have no money. That's just how they are. I hate it. I used what little money I had that was supposed to go to my car payment go in my tank so that I could get Merlin to the Vet. Yes, I believe it was worth it. But I am just simply stating that in my certain situation, I am doing everything I can for my cat.

I dont know how some vets sleep at night.  I cant imagine turning a cat away in such dire need as your kitty.

I have sold things to afford their meds also.

very sad situation.

Yes, you did and you are.  Good on you..

It was an awful situation to find yourself in and you did brilliantly...You obviously care very much for Merlin.

I hope you have him for along time to come.

I intend on bringing Merlin home one way or the other. I told my husband that if it comes down to it, which it's looking in that direction, we are selling our tv. It is a flat screen 3d tv. We have other ones we can sell we just have to find someone that will buy it. Thanks for the support you guys are giving and I know you were just trying to give me advice. I am must stressing. I'm going to call the vet in about 30 minutes to get an update and talk with them about imom. Imom asks for so much info and before I even start anything I am going to make sure that this Vet will accept a check from them. I will keep updating.

Got an update on Merlin. They said last night his BUN was 180. They did another one and it is now down to 90. They are shooting for 40. He IS responding but he is still pretty ill. Right now they are just giving him fluids and they are shooting for that 40. That is a pretty big jump in one night if you ask me. The vet is going to look into IMOM since they have never heard of it and they will see what they want to do with it. I have to figure out how to get the info on my end uploaded and sent to them.

Have they told you what his Creatanine is?  WIth the BUN that high, he probably now has some kidney damage =(

When you can, look into Renavast.  It helps with kidney issues.

They told me what it was last night but I can't remember. And if he does have kidney damage I hope it isn't bad.

Merlin92, I really hope makes a full recover.... I also hope that he never goes through this again, ever....:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
I am not sure how in depth your conversation with the e-vet was.... so I feel more than just vibes and good wishes, I had to say something here for his future, as these problems so often reoccur....
Please try to see what happened to him - what blocked him - was it crystals? Kidney stones? If crystals, oxalate? Struvite? It is very important that you know this information so you can prevent this in the future the best way you can..... It can be done with x-rays, a culture and urinalysis....
Yes, he will have to be in a special diet, or in the very least on a all wet diet.... Probably due to the severity of his case this vet will put him on a prescription diet. Please make sure he eats nothing but that for a very long while.... Afterwards you can change him for another wet, with your vet's assistance, or better yet, raw....
Also, one very important thing you have to know, is that male cats can die very quickly from this - you and him were incredibly fortunate. A blockage can kill a kitty in 24-48 hours. He started showing symptoms 2 weeks ago.... If this happens again, he might not be so lucky.
As a rule of thumb, if the kitty is jumping in and out of the box, peeing blood, peeing outside of the box, it is an emergency. A kitty who is not peeing makes it an immediate, life-threatening emergency.
Erratic behaviors, like sudden aggression, hissing, hiding, are all a sign of pain, and warrant a vet visit.
Your kitten doesn't need to go on a prescription diet - the ingredients are not the best (at all) and it serves only one purpose - preventing crystals/urinary issues.... but it will not be good for his health otherwise. The best thing to do for his health and future, is to put him in an all wet, low carbs diet.... The more species appropriate - the better - think meat, and forget the kibbles. He will be much better off....
Last but not least, I do understand times are hard.... God I so do! I have been there.... But know that things can be done, and for more than the situation looks helpless, there is help out there, and things can happen.....
Maybe you can put just a little bit aside every month for the kitties for emergency situations like these.... Or get health insurance for your kitties - get for the kitten now, and later for Merlin, when he is deemed cured from this, and it is no longer a pre-existing condition situation..... Just something to think about it, so you are covered....
For now, tons, tons of vibes for your little boy, for him to make a full recover, and thank you SO much for taking him to the vet.... :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

We understand you're stressing. But many of us have been or are IN your situation: no jobs, no insurance. My husband and I lost our house due to his medical condition. We have no insurance. We live in our RV with 8 cats.

Carolina's advice is about what to do when Merlin comes home, which hopefully he will. :heart2: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

These are important questions to ask the vet. Why did he have the blockage? Was it simply a bladder/urinary tract infection? Were there crystals in his urine? If so, what kind were they? Calcium oxalate? Struvite? Was it a kidney stone problem?

To properly care for him when he comes home, you need to understand what caused the problem. In the middle of the emergency, everything is buzzing, and you don't remember what the vet said. BEEN THERE. But this is why we're putting the information out there - so you can come back here when you have calmed down and are thinking more clearly.

When you do have more information, we can help you with his further care.

Vibes he fully recovers! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Alexis, and all those who can afford to contribute to his care, thank you for being Merlin's angels. :heart2:

Remember that insurance might well not cover a recurrance of this condition.  Read the small print very carefully, talk to them first if necessary.

Thankfully, I've never had a kitty with crystals, but I did have a kitty with chronic renal failure.  Both are best managed by a change in diet and maybe some meds, depending on the situation.

The reason the BUN is so high is probably a combination of fighting off an infection and his body building up toxicity, which the kidneys filter out.  His kidneys have been overwhelmed with the toxins, which is why they are pushing fluids on him.  They want to flush the toxins out and get his numbers to a more reasonable level.  (Think of a human with a bladder or urinary tract infection and all the fluids they drink to help flush it out.)  Is he eating??

I would highly recommend you go in person to visit him.  When Hannah was at the vet's due to a serious upper respiratory infection, she only ate when I went to visit her.  I went twice a day for a week just so she would eat.  I would also love on her while I was there. She only had the strength to eat, then would fall asleep on the table.  So, your boy NEEDS for you to see him so he'll be reassured you've not deserted him and he knows you love him.  Also, take something (an old towel or shirt) with your scent on it to place in his cage so he'll be comforted by the smells of home.

We are going to go see him after lunch. They said that I really can't or shouldn't pet him much because he is covered in his urine but I'm going to anyway. I haven't asked about much. I'm not sure they've figured out what is caused this to happen they are just trying to get him to stabilize. I'm going through every room in my house today to see what I can sell. Then Friday Saturday and Sunday I am doing a yard sale. I'll keep selling until I get up alot of money. One way or the other. I just hope I get a job soon so I can help him more. We have both been interviewed for one. just playing the waiting game.

We've been through this 3 times with Bitty and each time we had to reach out to ask others for help making the payments.  The last time was close to $1000 and our combined monthly income is only $1500 - but someone came through and paid the whole bill for us.  If you are like me, and I have a feeling you are, your kitty is your baby and you would do everything for him to keep him safe, healthy and happy.  The vet put Bitty on a prescription diet after the first episode and it has recurred twice, while on the diet.  I've been doing some research and have discovered the vet prescribed diet is full of wheat & grains - not very good for kitties.  We've been looking at alternatives and so far have not found anything that Bitty will eat.  He does not like raw meat of any kind so a raw diet is kind of tricky.  We've tried it a number of times now and he just refuses to eat anything raw.  So now we're trying to find a good quality canned food that has mostly or all meat - not meat by-products.

It is really scary to see your baby going through this and I've been crying reading all your updates.  Bitty's last episode was only a month ago and now that I know what to look for, we had him into the vet within minutes of noticing him acting funny. He was still in for 3 days for treatment.  But with the proper care, attention and love from you he can & will live a happy life.  I just know it!  :0)

Praying for a speedy and full recovery for Merlin!

Forgot something - the urine covering your baby should not deter you from giving him some love.  Just remember to wash afterwards (and I'm sure you will cause it's really stinky).  Bitty always seemed to respond better to treatment when we could give him the pets and love that he desperately wanted and needed.  Touch does wonderful things for people and their critters.  :0)

Oh I sat and held him even with pee all over him when he was still home. I was petting him yesterday before his bladder was drained and he kept opening his eyes and looking at me. I forgot to add that in the update. The vet said that his central nervous system was being attacked because Merlin wouldn't blink when they went to go touch his eye. That was scary to hear. I hope that has changed now though. He was lifting his head and keeping it up right after the drained his bladder. I just hope he overcomes this and walks away as a healthy cat and that I can take him home soon.

So glad to hear that.  We actually planned on being at the clinic with Bitty for a few hours each day just so we could be close to him.  It took some convincing to get the vet to allow it but once they realized how much calmer he was with us there, they gave us the ok.

They told me that we could stay as long as we wanted. He perked up when was saw him. His levels are still at 90 but he ate a little bit today. I could tell he didn't want me to leave. He was sitting up and his ears were perked up. His percentage rate for making it through went up. His creatinine levels were 17.5 last night and it's down to 3.5 today.

I set up a wish on a website if you want to chip in and help. I am not sure how it works but I set the goal for 600. I really have no clue what the vet costs are going to be in total but right now it is at 382
