Hi Folks

My kitty seems to be sick, and I don't know what to do:

1. He has two sores on his lips, each a little smaller than a pencil eraser

2. He is scratching himself, a lot

3. has small scabs on his skin; not sure if it's from the scratching or something else or a combination of the two

4. His fur is falling out, mostly around his face, and behind the ears

I took him to the vet two weeks ago. They updated his shots and gave him a shot of antibiotics, but it doesn't seem to have helped. They did a scrape of his skin and it's not fungal.

He also sounds very congested.

Anyone have any ideas? Back to the vet?

Help my kitty is sick =-(

By the skin symptoms, it sounds like ringworm, but it could also be something like mange or allergies. What did they test for when they did the skin scrape? I do know that some things don't always show up consistently from skin scrape tests, so perhaps another test is in order. Did they use a black light on him? Ringworm tends to glow under a black light (but not always).

The antibiotic was probably given to prevent bacterial infections in the skin from whatever condition is ailing him, and therefore would not clear up anything but a bacterial infection - so consider it as a preventative measure.

The congestion may or may not be related. If he is fighting a skin condition, it can lower his immune system and allow other things to creep in.

I think another trip to the vet is in order.

I am on my phone so I can't link right now, but if you search for my board here in health about ringworms, maybe it will give you some insight?

My cats had ringworms and it did not show on scrape, black light or culture sample. But treating them like ringworms helped tremendously. I have pics for you to refer to on my board as well.

I think that you are both right, because--truth be told--I myself caught ringworm last week!

I got two rings; one on my neck (which looks suspiciously like a hickey after a few days of antifungal cream) and one on my upper left thigh.

Vet appt scheduled for 9;15 tomorrow.

The only problem now is that he knows a vet trip is pending, and he's hiding. I took the carrier out last night, and he's nowhere to be found.
