I was just reading about ticked tabbies and everyone's curiousity about them ,they are rare, how rare,?I volunteer for a shelter locally and I have been there since 2008 and I have seen less than a dozen ticked tabbies, one ticked torbie who was beautiful. It is in Nashua and is one of the busiest in the state. Flicker site has alot of pictures of ticked tabbies and she is also all over my facebook page as I own one that I got  from the shelter when I started. I figure she is most likely an aby mix but who knows, really,it is just a guess. They are truly stunning and I prefer them to their purebreed counterparts. I also have a picture that was literally taken from my own cats coat and blown up to zoom in on the coloring.

Funny to hear they are rare, I have a brown ticked tabby & white and a brown ticked torbie & white DSH. They are littermates and there was at least one more ticked torbie and a ticked tabby (w/no white) in their litter. The rest were brown mackerel tabbies and torbies but those had a lot of ticking in their coats also so their stripes are somewhat faded looking.

I have shown my torbie Harlequin as a HHP and I always notice the judges doing a second glance at her info sheet and then looking back at her to confirm that yes she really is ticked, and they often comment on it as well, and/or explain what the ticked coloration is to the audience.

I doubt they have any Abyssinian in them. They were a feral litter I rescued from my backyard, and I've never seen any ferals/strays around here who looked like Abys. Their mother was solid black.

Here's my torbie, Harlequin(with another littermate I kept, Blaze, who is a mackerel tabby):

Their ticked tabby brother, Spot:

This was their other ticked torbie sister(I didn't keep her):

I see ticked tabbies all the time at our shelter.  In fact, I've fostered a couple of them.

The easy way to post photos is to host them on a free hosting site like photobucket, then use the image icon above the message box to paste the url of the image in here.

I wouldn't say they're rare, different regional areas sometimes have more or less of different colours & patterns

Tabby comes in 4 patterns, doesn't mean there is a pedigree in there
