I am the same way, I tell people "They live here.  You don't.  They show you respect.  I expect you to do the same for them."  I hate it when people will kick them out of the way or are outright mean to them in front of me.  It's like "Really?"  I won't date a guy who doesn't like animals.  And if anyone complains about my cats, I flat out tell them that they don't have to come over and deal with them.  And "dog people" are so arrogant and always saying that cats are aloof and cold.  What do they know?

I even had a vet tell me once that he didn't like cats!!  Um, why are you in veterinary medicine then?  I walked out without paying!  Missouri is really bad about how they treat cats.  It seems shelters and rescues bend over backwards for dogs around here but when it comes to cats... Not much.  They figure, it's just a cat... Put it down.  It's not good for anything!!  It ticks me off so much!!

Even the pet specialty stores around here... They have a whole half of the building for dogs.  2 rows for cats!!!  What the heck?  They don't even make cat treats, only dog treats.  Another thing that gets under my skin.

That's why I take my cats to a cat's only vet clinic now.  I originally took my cat that was sick a lot to find out what was really wrong with him.  My other cat is one that hates going to a vet.  She gets really stressed out at the vet's but I took her there for an exam.  The other vet I was taking her to never really gave her a good exam. She said she didn't want to stress her out, I think she was actually afraid of her.  She had never looked in her mouth and it turned out she had a lot of dental problems.  This vet did a dental on her and pulled 5 of her teeth.  It's no telling how long she had been putting up with a sore mouth.

Unfortunately, I live in Missouri.  The state is way behind on Animal Rights and Welfare!!  They love dogs, so they say... It's nicknamed the Puppy Mill State.  So I don't think they really love dogs all that much, either.  But, a cat only vet is unheard of in this state.  The vet I have now and have had for about 5 years is a good one.  He loves my cats, all cats.  He understands them and cares about giving proper care and more importantly, they love him.

I been around people who thought it was a fun game on the road, if they see a cat to try to run it over. That was when I was young and didn't have much savvy. Now I think I would hit that person with a frying pan or something.

I go to a cats only vet with Kairi. Regular vets do treat cats differently. Most use overboard restraint when doing an exam and have a tech scruff the cat for no reason. At the cat hospital the only time they used any restraint at ALL was when he flinched when getting his blood work done. Less restraint normally makes more restraint easier when necessary. My dogs go to a regular multi species vet. They are very good, but I worked for a feline vet years ago, and I know they treat their patients very specially.

I think many cat and dog owners treat the cats differently partly because cats don't "need" them as much. Dogs are always demanding something, and the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I have neighbors that set out traps and when they catch a cat, they don't even bother checking to see if it has a collar... They shoot with a shotgun and brag about it.  It makes me sick.  I used to know where they hid the traps and would let the cats out and take the traps but they got wise to it... Went out and got more.  Now, a lot of mornings, I hear a shotgun go off and my heart breaks because I know it's one more life I couldn't save.  You'd think people in my neighborhood would know NOT to let their cats out after all my warnings and the jerks bragging.  But no... People gripe and gripe "You shot my cat, didn't you?"  Well, if you weren't an irresponsible pet person in the first place, your cat wouldn't have been out to get trapped and shot!

I have called the Humane Society, Animal Control and the police on him.  They've done nothing but say "You shouldn't do that, sir"  That's how backwards Missouri is!  If it were dogs, there'd be heck to pay!!

My vet may be an all species vet but he is as good as any cat only vet.  He never restrains my cats.  He will even take in strays I've rescued, spay/neuter them and put them up for adoption.

I would like to find a cats only vet. I messed up on Daymon because I got a free vet visit with his adoption, and I thought I had a month to schedule it, turns out I only had two weeks. Oh well. But I did call a vet this morning that is literally right up the street from me, and they wouldn't give me the free visit, so I told them I'd hold off for a while (Daymon did see a vet at the shelter a few days after I adopted him, and there are no health concerns). The receptionist did say to make sure to get him the rabies shot and until then he should avoid having other canine contact... I told her, "Oh, both my cats are indoor only." It irked me the way she (1) didn't ask what species Daymon is, and (2) automatically assumed he was a dog!

I took Boots to a regular vet back home when he needed his first kitten shots. I'd told the vet he was still semi-feral, and he was in his carrier, which had a front hinged door, so obviously she didn't want to reach her hand into a small box with a possibly diseased kitten inside. But instead of letting me unlatch the whole thing and take the top half off, with no warning, she opened the door, turned the carrier on its end and shook him out.

Needless to say, we didn't go back.

Oh dear lord!! That would have freaked me out. Cat vets and their staff seem to just be cat people. They understand that cats are a certain way, that fact soothes me, even this morning, while I'm getting ready to take Kairi for his neuter. I know that he's a good boy for the vet-he purrs and hops right out of the carrier and rubs on all of them. I also know that if he was scared they'd know exactly how to make him feel better. I feel comfortable leaving him there, and know he'll probably still love the vet when I pick him up. They also have 6 (yes, 6) cats that live there. A litter of sisters that seem to be like "Mama cats" to all the cats that come in. They came in as a stray litter and just stayed. That's one more reason that I adore my vet.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I can freely admit I despise people who don't like cats or own cats and treat them like poop.

I know a few of dfs friends who say they hate cats or whatever and it is well known I'm a cat fanatic. I'm psycho for my cats. The few people df knows who have said they don't like cats and have come into our house now say they don't like cats but they like mine. Totally backwards but as long as they treat my cats with respect I will allow them here. One even found a stray and brought it here to live rather than driving by. I think they only reason they like my cats is because Fatman could convert the most adament cat hater and now Croc is our Fatman in training (minus the fat roll).

I am both a dog and cat person. They both show me different kinds of love and I enjoy them both. However, we are very strict with the dogs when it comes to the cats. They are never allowed to chase a cat and are taught that cats are higher in the pack than them. For instance, the dogs are not allowed to lay in my lap, that is reserved for kitties, the dogs lay next to me. Cats are fed up high, dogs on the ground.

But, I enjoy taking the dog to the dog park and taking her to Petsmart and just hanging out. Which is something I can't do with the cats. They provide a social outlet for me, which I enjoy.

I don't think it has to be a one or the other situation.

I despised cats for the majority of my life (hold your fire! lol). The people that I knew that had cats always had those psychotic, possessed cats that would rip your face off if you looked at them the wrong way. I just assumed most cats were like that. I was also tired of cats hanging around the yard, getting in the way, using the yard as public restroom.

My parents were also cat haters so I pretty much grew up thinking cats were horrible, even though I remember us having 2 when I was around 4. My parents left them in a box in a parking lot a couple weeks after they arrived. (Yeah, I still cringe at the thought).

It wasn't until I met Parker and his sister, MJ that I took to cats. They changed my entire view on cats and made me see there are sweet kitties out there who won't hurt you. I fell in love with them over time and after MJ ran away, my parents met Parker and fell in love with him. My step father even cared for the 3 ferals that were born under his shed, feeding them and building them a little shelter. He then got into building cat trees/condos.

It really does only take one special cat to change someones mind. I couldn't imagine my life without a kitty now.

 Oh you made me laugh :clap::clap::clap::clap:
My best friend from childhood hates cats, one of the last few times she actually said I am not normal - and other people thinks the same because I have so many - at the time 4, all "over the house" etc. etc..... Clearly , I am not normal  She also said she could not believe I would put my cats ahead of her, how she couldn't stay in my house because she hate cats.... - she has been my best friend for 30 years - to which I responded: "Ok.... Time to stop talking. If you continue to say a word about my cats, this conversation will be over very soon, and we won't have much to talk about in the future. Do NOT make me choose in between you or them, as they come WAY before you, or anyone else, for that matter. They are my children. Yep, you will not stay in my house.... I will put you in a nice hotel, and we can hang out on my free time.... We can find a way.... But Absolutely, if you want to be my friend, you have to come to terms that my cats come first, will always come first, and if you find that weird... well, good for you - not my problem."
I don't care much if people like cats or not..... It is their problem, not mine.... They can like or dislike whatever they want..... But in MY house, with MY family :nono: Not the place to be disrespectful. When I say these are my children, I mean it. I do not say it lightly. And you don't play with my family.... it just rubs me the wrong way..... So in my house..... it is really my way or the highway..... Don't like my family? Great - the front door is open and it's your best friend Vai Com Deus!

Honestly, I think there are two main reasons why people grow up disliking cats. Either they have had a bad experience with them or they've grown up in a dog only household (or not pets at all) and cats are an enigma to them. I find "some" farmers are the worse because cats are like rodents to them. They are no different then mice and rats.

I've had cats my whole life. Although I own three dogs and three cats I would def classify myself as a cat person. I know I will ALWAYS own a cat. Dogs...maybe. I adore dogs  but cats are just in my heart.

I keep people at a distance that say they don't like cats, although my two and my mam's have converted a few people....Blaine always said and still says he's not a cat person BUT if you see him with flash its not the case he dotes on her and sooty but flash is the apple of her daddies eye! my SIL is allergic to cats but she takes antihistamines before she comes round....

one of my best friends ill never let around my two something about her i just don't think I can trust...my other friend is freaked out by cats she doesn't understand the whole purrrrrrring thing

I think that people that don't like cats like their own Independence and feel threatened by cats and just don't understand them!

I would go for a cat over a dog any day, I love Vito (mil's dog) but I can give him back lol

I was a dog person who didn't want a cat. But, when my husband and I moved into a new apartment we ended up getting a kitten. I can honestly say that I'm glad we got him. I still love dogs and really woud like to add one to the family but I'm finding there's just as much to love when it comes to cats. When I was younger my family had a cat who was very independent and didn't want much to do with us kids, which is what I don't like not to mention us kids had to clean the litterbox. But, Monk is affectionate, but not too affectionate and smart. He's even learned how to play fetch, sit on command (though he doesn't alway listen) and walk on a leash! Though, I can't stand the litterbox which luckily my husband is willing to take care of.

When I first brought home my dog from animal jail. I tied him to the furnature until he stopped trying to go for the cats. He now will let them crawl all over him.

Wish we can do that to people. Just sit down in a crowd of cats and get to know them before you say you don't like them.

Hi, I found this forum because I did a search to find out why some people don't like cats. I have owned cats all my life and currently own three. They are such great companions and pets. The reason I was searching is because my daughter's boyfriend came over to meet us. I made him dinner and was so surprised that he kept making comment after comment when he would notice or cats do anything. He would say "that is why I dont like cats." Attachment one point he picked up my favorite cat and told her that he was dominant over her. I was flabbergasted. I don't know what to do. I read that the reason some people who don't like cats is because they cannot be controlled like dogs. This then shows that the person could possibly like to control not

Not only cats but people as well. I don't want my daughter getting more involved with this person if that is the case.

Sounds like your daughter's boyfriend doesn't have many manners, not a great way to make a first impression with your girlfriend's parents hey! [emoji]128566[/emoji]
