My kitties have puppy fever! A friend brought over her teacup pomeranian puppies this morning in hopes I would take one off her hands... Well, I can no longer use the excuse that my cats would be jealous! They fell so in love with the puppies and were so disappointed when they left. They are mad at me right now... They (the puppies) were cute and it is tempting but I just don't think they're responsible enough to take care of a pet. I mean, I would end up doing ALL the work!

LOL your post made me literally laugh out loud- ya

I feel like approaching this as you would parenting advice. You're the grown up, you can tell them no lol - they won't hate you for saying no sometimes.

So ask yourself if you really want the comittment of another animal? Dogs are alot more work and effort than cats, not to mention generally more expensive.

I say get them a stuffed toy lol

I guess I laughed because I pictured something like this:

It's funny you say that Nebula... I went to the toy store and got them a mechanical puppy!!  They hate it!!  They are afraid of it!!  They hiss and slap at it... They growl at it!!  It's so funny to watch their reactions to it.

I love dogs, too, but I just don't have the time to deal with a puppy, let alone dog, right now.  I'm starting classes back this week and I won't be home enough to have a new puppy to worry about.  My cats are disappointed, I know... But, now I know in the future, when I am ready, they would love a puppy!

That is such a cute story!  My RB cat Redman loved dogs.  Once my brother brought his miniature dachshund, CB, over for a visit.  Redman thought he could play with him like he did our dog.  So he climbed on top of the lawnmower and jumped down on CB.  CB thought he was under an aerial attack.  It scared the poor dog half to death.

They have several doggie friends.  Most are larger dogs like German Shepherds and they have one dashund friend, Cocoa... But, they don't think Cocoa counts because Cocoa thinks she's a CAT!!!  Haha!!  It took some convincing, but they think that Cocoa is just a strange and somewhat UNattractive cat!!  Haha!!!

How cute!  But I totally understand not taking one, they are a TON of work.  And I dare say the kitties would never scoop the backyard.

Why is your friend trying to get rid of her puppies? This doesn't sound like a reputable breeder so I would definitely not take one of these puppies.

If you do decide to get a puppy please don't get one from someone if they are calling them "teacup" as this generally indicates poorly bred animals, as there is no breed where the designation "teacup" is used by any legitimate organization. It's usually used by BYBs and puppy mills trying to sell undersized dogs (or runts bred to runts), and this is often connected to many health problems. Reputable breeders do not breed "teacups".

No, she's not a breeder.  She didn't intend to.  I wouldn't let her put an ad in the paper or sell them in the parking lot of Wal Mart or someplace.  So she is trying to be responsible and do the right thing by these puppies and find good homes for them.

She didn't listen to me and have hers fixed and when she finally got around to it, they couldn't do the female... She was already pregnant!!  She didn't even know they had mated.  They never showed any signs of trying to in front of her.  They said they could end it and abort the puppies but she didn't choose that option.  She let her female have the puppies and got the male neutered so no more surprises would come up!!

Thanks for the concern but she is embarrassed and she is correcting it and doing right by the puppies.

I know all about teacup and munchkin breeds.  That is how she got suckered in... She thought they were so cute and spent a lot of money on hers from a BYB.  Luckily, they have been healthy.  But, after all the information I have given her she knows all the facts now.  Unfortunately she didn't get hers fixed in time.  Luckily, they are not siblings and though they are related, it's more distant so it's not really line breeding.

That's good to hear! Sorry I didn't mean to go on a rant about it but the whole "teacup" thing is a pet peeve of mine!

No biggie!  I understand.  It's the same with me and "Designer Breeds"... It's a MIXED BREED people, not a purebreed!!  Oh, don't even get me stared! LOL!!

I support you with 'no puppy' thing.

If to adopt another being - they deserve best attention.  And if we can't give it - better someone else takes them who can give such attention.

Dogs deserve to be treated with attention they require, which is very different from that kitties require.  Even small dogs - they are still dogs.

And I loved that remark about scooping the poop!

Even if fed raw - they still need to go to the toilet, and they don't cover it like cats do.

I wonder what our cats think of toys?  Yours didn't like the mechanical puppy for example.

I gave my kitties a toy of mine (my husband brought it from Switzerland).  It's a soft toy - a puppy the size of a big kitten.  It's so well made and cute.  My cats just sniff at it and go away, but one of them (May) - she will lick that puppy on a face and touch it gently as if thinking that it's alive.  She'd then leave it be not to disturb it too much.  It's amazing to see that they actually understand what is face and what is backside of that puppy, and what are paws and tail.  Cats are so smart.

Well, they all have their toy preferences.  Piper doesn't really like anything that requires her to undignify herself with chasing and stuff.  She loves, loves, loves catnip toys and stuffed animals, though.

Phoebe loves interaction toys the best.  She gets worked up with Da Bird and the laser light though.  I have to stop after a few minutes because she gets too worked up!!

Paige likes interaction toys and stuffed animals.  Anything she can cuddle and snuggle up to is tops with her!!

Morgan La Fay likes just about everything.  She likes the Motor Mouse and the track toys the best, I think.  She also likes toys that light up or are shiny.

King Arthur makes it a point to play with all the toys.  He is not a wasteful dude.  His favorites are Motor Mouse and Da Bird, though.

I think they were sending me a message "skinning" the mechanical puppy.... The message is "we're not stupid, mom!  We know this is not a real doggie!"  They enjoy their canine friends, as do I but I just don't have the schedule that is fair for a puppy or dog.   And it really wouldn't be fair to them, either.  I think if I did get a dog, they would soon resent it.  But, when they leave after an hour or so, it's fun!

I love dogs, and puppies are so adorable, but I'll adopt an adult dog over a puppy any day, I don't care what breed or mix.

The day I get a puppy is the day I have "Sucker" stamped on my forehead  ;)

My cats adore my dog, but they take no part in his care.

He'll be 14 in a few weeks, I could really use their help with him sometimes :D

If I ever do get a dog, it's going to be a "real" dog... Something like a German Shepherd or along those lines.  I've never really taken to the lap dog thing.  Sure they are cute but most are so yippy and annoying.  I prefer a dog that can serve a purpose (guarding and protecting and such).  But that is probably years away for now!
