Vibes and good thoughts for Tabby?

Thread Starter

I took Tabby to the vet this morning for her spay. She weighs 7.5 pounds and we think she's about 7 months old now. It was time.

But I feel like the worst Mama in the world! anon.gif Tabby is getting a spay for Christmas! But really, it is the best time to do this....I'm off work tomorrow and Monday and Rick is off Monday and Tuesday. Then I'm off work again next Friday. So she'll not be alone for a long time and, hopefully, she won't be able to do anything to her stitches. (I remember when Mollipop was spayed, Rick had to do an ER run to the vet with her because she tore out stitches and tightened the remaining ones to where the vet had to loosen them again. It wasn't pretty.)

I really worry about her, even though she's doing very well now. We're still cleaning ears and I did ask to have her ears thoroughly cleaned today while she's under anesthesia. I know she'll be OK. But I'm more than a little nervous....actually, yesterday I came "this close" to just postponing the spay for awhile. She just seems so young! But I know it's for the best and we don't want her going in heat.

Please send some good thoughts for Tabby (and maybe for me, too?)! Thanks, guys!

vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif for Tabby! She'll be fine, and it was smart thinking to get it done now while you can be home to keep an eye on her.

Many vibes for you and tabby.

I just took my wee ones to get fixed two weekends ago. They are still mad at me but healing well. Lol

vibes.gifvibes.gif Many good vibes for Tabby.  I'm sure she'll be just fine.    A spray for Christmas?  Is that kind of like getting coal in your stocking?     I'm sure she'll forgive and forget.  It's a good thing that you'll be home to keep an eye on her.     Wow - she's over 7 lbs. already!  Angel and Tippy are around 8 lbs -- maybe a bit more by now.

Let us know how she's doing and give her a big kiss for me!

I know what you mean about feeling like a bad meowmy, though - one year Cotton got a dental cleaning and extraction on the 22nd b/c I knew we'd be home to keep an eye on him. laughing02.gif

Thanks guys!

Tabby's doing well. They called me yesterday to say that she was out of surgery and everything is OK. Then I called back last night after closing, just for a brief update. She was starting to awaken, but still kind of floppy....at the not-really-walking-all-that-great stage, but reacting to the dr's voice. Oh, and they did do some ear cleaning, too.....it's difficult to keep up with those ears sometimes. We can bring her home after Rick gets home from work this afternoon. She's wearing an e-collar, so she won't be a happy camper.

Rick said he really missed her antics yesterday at supper time. She's so goofy at mealtimes and she wasn't there to make him smile. And last night, the bed seemed very empty without her. I miss her purring.....she has the loudest purr on such a small little girl.

Thank you for the vibes and for thinking about her.

I think Xmas is a great time to get it done, as you said you'll be off work and around to watch her so hopefully she doesn't get at those stitches. Also another thing, the Animal hosp. you took her to is probably glad to have the business this time of year. Our hours are getting cut this time of year because no one can be bothered to bring pets in unless they have a huge emergency, or are boarding.

She's home! She's a bit out of it....she didn't eat breakfast today and she tried to eat a bit tonight, but she's just pooped. She is wearing an e-collar and she keeps walking backwards; I guess she thinks if she keeps going backward, she'll be able to get away from that darn collar. We've gated off the stairs so she doesn't fall down the steps. And we're watching her....she made it to the top of the chair and we put her back on the floor. She made it to the kitchen chair and we put her back on the floor. She gave up and is trying to nap on the green pillow on the living room floor.

I feel so bad for her. There she was, minding her own business without a care in the world. And look what we've done to her. She has a bit of a balance problem on a good day (because of those ears) and now, she's kind of really off-kilter. I hope she gets used to the collar.

Poor Tabby. She keeps looking at me....."Mom, what did I do to deserve this?" heartpump.gif I love that girl so much.

Aw hugs for you and tabby.

Atleast in a few days she will be mostly normal again. It took a bit for Tubbs to get semi normal. She was so quiet df thought they broke her but now.she's back to talking to us again.

Tabby isn't eating. She acts like she wants to, but she won't eat. I tried to nuke the food in the microwave this morning and I also added a little beef broth (it's not canned; I warmed up some broth that I had made and it was in the freezer) and put that over the canned food, too, for a bit of extra flavor. She didn't eat much of anything last night and maybe a few licks this morning for breakfast. That was it. She's drinking water, though. We take the collar off for her to eat something, but all she wants to do is bite at her belly.

Rick slept on the sofa last night in case Tabby tried to jump on anything, so he could pick her up. She came back to me in bed. I picked her up and settled her in bed on the electric blanket for awhile. She immediately started to purr and slept for about 3 hours, all stretched out on the blanket with the comforter over her. She slept; I just lay there and watched her. As soon as she awakened and went over to the edge of the bed, I got up and picked her up and put her back on the floor. I think I finally fell asleep around 3:00 this morning.

She's also using the litter box. I took the top of the Booda Dome off and she could get inside and move around easier. So she's drinking and peeing. But she's hasn't eaten much at all.

I don't know if this will help but mine weren't big on food right away either. It took about two days for them to eat normal again. They nibbled here and there but no full meals. I would assume that as long as she is going Portugal ajd drinking she is ok just still adjusting after the anesthesia.

She might get her appetite back tonight. I really think the anesthesia nauseates some pets (and people) longer than it does others. Maybe a bit of turkey would entice her to eat?vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif for her!

Glad to hear Tabby is home.     She'll be just fine and will forget her whole ordeal.    Give her a kiss for us -- and kisses from Angel, Tony and Tippytoes.

Have a happy holiday!!!!

Well, I called the vet and talked to a lab tech. He suggested baby food and I do have some on hand (from last week when Boo wasn't doing well), so I'll try that. But I just gave her some pain meds, so I want to wait about 20 minutes to see if the meds will kick in a little bit. I'm really worried.....this is not our Tabby. (I don't think she's in much pain though; I think that partly she's freaked about the e-collar and partly she's never had to go through this and she doesn't know what the heck happened to her.) And Rick is out at the store, so I called him to ask for a bit of sliced turkey for her, too.

Thank you.

If she is still on pain meds, her appetite will be affected. She sounds a bit like my Fred though, a bit on the dramatic side. laughing02.gif  I have had more cats than I can count go through the spay/neuter process but when Fred was spayed, he acted so pitiful, so sad, so distraught I rushed him back to the vet. He acted completely normal while he was there. Ate fine, chatted with the techs, loved on everyone. He was totally playing us. Punk.

I'm sure she'll be fine, especially once the collar is off and you aren't administering pain meds anymore.

As to the Christmas spay.....don't feel bad, every kitten I work with (which isn't many these days) gets an extra special 6 month birthday present!  Don't know how they feel about it but I love it!

Oh, sorry I missed this thread til now! (I am missing most threads til the weekends these days...) I hope Tabby will start eating ok soon, and also hope she heals up ok and feels back to normal real soon!! Dorothy hated that e-collar for the day or 2 we had it on her when she had an eye infection... She wouldn't eat with it on either, but she would as soon as I took it off. So I left it off when I was home and could watch her and not let her paw at her eye..

Well I hope by now Tabby has eaten some turkey or baby food... I forget, is she a cuddler at all? Meaning, could you take off the collar and hold her and love her and get some food in her that way? (Like feeding a baby kind of, I guess?)

Anyway, best wishes for her and for all of you!!!

How is Tabby doing now?

I don't understand why vets just automatically put cones on them now. I've never had a cat wear a cone after a spay, ever.

Don't heat cat food in the microwave. smile.gif To warm cat food, run hot water over the dish and leave a litte warm water in the dish and mix it into the food, or, run hot water over the dish, put the food in the dish and set the dish of food into a bowl of hot water and let it sit there for a few minutes, then stir it around.

Offer small amounts at a time, not a whole dish full.

Keep us posted!

Aw, poor baby! I'm sure she'll be feeling herself soon. There are a number of TCS kitties that have taken a few days to want to eat again after surgery. Definitely affects some more than others. agree.gif

BUMMER that she picks at her tummy though - I guess you have to leave the cone on there. If it's still an issue Monday, maybe pick up a baby "onesie" for her and cut to adapt it. Several people here have tried that vs. the cone, because most cats just hate that thing.

Like otto, we've never had to use one after a spay... but that was because everyone left their tummies alone.

vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif she perks up for you tomorrow and it's a perfect Christmas!

She didn't eat breakfast this morning. She roamed around the kitchen with the other cats while we were preparing their breakfast. She acts like she's hungry and she goes to the plate, but after a lick or two, she's done. She is drinking water, though. We tried to add a bit of warm water to the food instead of microwaving it. Nothing. No baby food either...she won't touch it. I only put a teaspoon or so of food down (mixed with a bit of warm water and she won't eat. All she wants to do is bite at her belly.

She played with Da Bird last night. I was careful with her, not a lot of running, jumping, etc. It was a more careful play and it lasted about 15 minutes or so. She was fine.

She slept with me all night. Once we put the collar back on, she flops down and that's it.

Thank you for your help with us. I just keep thinking that sooner or later, she'll decide to eat. When Amber came home from her spay, she ate absolutely nothing for one full week. Finally Rick sat down with her and said that if she didn't eat, she was going back to the vet....and that night Amber ate. We were in contact with the vet the whole time that time, too.

I don't know what to do for Tabby. I can get a Onesie for her on Monday. Thank you.

Today, Monday, we have eating! clap.gif Tabby got up with me and trotted out to the kitchen. She was crying and circling right along with everybody else for breakfast. I took her collar off and she dug right in. Finished her plate and then started in on what Molli didn't eat. She would have gone over to the other plates, too, but she hasn't eaten in a few days and I didn't want her to eat too much and then get sick. So I told her we had to take it slowly for awhile. She washed up, started biting at those stitches and I had to put the collar back on. She is not amused and is pouting on the green pillow in the living room.

But she ate a very good breakfast! Yay Tabby! clap.gif (I was all prepared to cart her off to the vet this morning)

WTG, Tabby! Maybe she knew the vet was open today and figured she'd better eat?
Glad to hear she started eating for you. Hopefully the pouting will end soon too!
Oh that is a relief. It just took her longer to recover. Make sure the vet puts that in her record, the longer recovery time. Depending on the anesthesia used, if she ever needs it again, they may want to use something else.
