I know I'm under a lot of stress with all of these visits to the Vet, but I'm having a hard time putting faith into what the doctor suspects is wrong with my cat.

Miss, who is 4 years old (5 next March) drinks more than my other two cats-she eats primarily dry food though. When she pees sometimes, she pees a lot. She doesn't pee a lot during the day, just one massive pile of pee at one time. She isn't draining bowls or anything, but she does put a dent in them.

For some reason, it freaked me out today, even though the first time I really noticed was maybe two years ago.

So I started looking at her blood results.

First time we took her in for turning her nose up at her food and vomiting white in July, they tested her and her creatinine was still within the normal level, but 2 points below the high end of normal. Vet didn't do much but switch her food. We switched her food and she had no problems for a few bags of food, then switched again, and three bags later, she stopped the eating and vomited/drooled around the house.

The creatinine level was 160 and the high end of normal is 175. Her Urea (or I guess BUN in the usa) is directly in the normal area.

I guess I'm scared about CRF. She started improving on the pills and a few days later we sub-q'd her and she did even better.

He never mentioned she might have any kind of kidney issue, and maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily.

On an unrelated note, she had a CK enzyme level that was totally off the charts, like 11,000! Normal is like 300. the vet said he normally sees it in cats that have had a fall from a high place, or in very sick cats, and he said, she is just not sick like that. He said her coat is shiny, she's bright eyed and friendly.

He said he suspects she had a fall or an injury, and it will come down when we test her levels next month, but he wants to do a follow up check of everything to be safe.

Can anyone give me any reassurance? I'm probably looking for trouble, but I feel very overwhelmed.

I should mention she was having issues with blood in her stool, it wasn't just vomiting and not eating.

Hi, JenL.

I'm so sorry you and Miss are going through this difficult time. It's never easy when our furbabies are sick.

I've read your other threads on Miss (Suspected colitis and I/Ddry and wet)... from everything you've written, it's easy to see you have a great many questions and concerns. I can't answer your questions, but I would like to suggest you sit down and have a long talk with your vet. And if he won't or can't answer your questions or alleviate some of your worries, I would recommend a second opinion. It's unconscionable that you have this many unanswered concerns while your cat is undergoing paid care from a licensed veterinarian.

While you're arranging those visits, you might also take a look at the site IBDKitties.net. Reviewing it may give you more insight into inflammatory bowel disease and help you formulate some of the questions for your vet.

God bless, Jen!!! I hope you are able to get this under control very, very soon!

Its normal for the cat to have high ranging Cr after vomiting and/or diarrhea bc he is likely dehydrated after that and so the Cr becomes higher concentrated from the loss of volume. It is not concerning. As you said, it is within the normal range. What pills is the cat taking and for what reason? Is it one that ends in pril?

The thirst and drinking is suspicious for diabetes. It is not an uncommon illness, especially if the cat is overweight. Is it? Your vet should have checked a urine analysis or asked for a sample. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to vomitng as well and could be exacerbated by the food it is eating, especially since dry food is high in carbs, which convert directly to sugar in the gut.

on second thought, i imagine a urine sample would be pretty hard to get from a cat. Do you know if blood glucose was checked?

I'm thinking along the same lines as Auntie Crazy, IBD. Soft stool, clear vomit and bouts of inappetance are classic symptoms. Franklin had all 3 and his weight got down to 5 LBS. He was diagnosed, via biopsy, with IBD. The bad news is that you can't cure IBD but the good news is that it is very manageable. He gets 5mg prednisolone every other day and will for life. He hasn't had soft stool and has puked only once since he started with the pred in May 2010. His weight is now over 8.5 pounds.

Thanks everyone.

Kyle, what do you feed Franklin? Any specific diet that helps him?
